'Damn U' Cover By Myself

For any of you living in the UK, you'll know that the weather was utterly horrible today! Being house bound I decided to record a quick a version of Damn U. I thought I'd post it here so that the Prince community can have a listen and give me some feedback.

https://soundcloud.com/dannygeorgethemusic/damn-u-cover

If you like it please give my Facebook page a look for more music and videos.

Peace and B Wild,
Danny George x

I hate people covering Prince songs. There's so few good ones...almost non-existent. LeAnn Rimes, Mariah...maybe have tried. Most have failed.

But boy - you sang that shit! THAT'S A GOOD MUTHAFUKKIN' COVER!

I see on your Soundcloud you did "Adore", too. Frankly, these are the only two covers I've really, really loved. To the point that it made me miss Prince. My roommate is like "are you crying?" (I had headphones on.) I said, "Shut up, it's a Prince thing."

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Hahaha thank you very much, that is high praise indeed!

I'm glad you found my Adore cover too. I completely forgot to post that one on here when I first uploaded it.

I've just recently set up a little studio in my house, so I can finally record whenever I feel like it from the comfort of my own home. It's makes such a difference, especially vocally. I can see now why Prince used to send everyone out when he wanted to record vocals.

Hi Dan,

These are great, I particularly like the “Adore” cover – not an easy track to pull off. Just out of interest, are the horn parts sample based (Kontakt)? Superb vocals as well.

It’s nice to see org members sharing their own work... Looking forward to hearing more.

Like others have expressed, I'm not a fan of the P covers I've heard and I avoid them like the plague...but what I enjoyed about yours was that you weren't trying to be or imitate P, you have a lovely voice and sang as yourself which was very nice in it's own right.

Now if you'd try Nothing Compares To You, purely for scientific research purposes...

wink biggrin

Wow guys, I'm slightly overwhelmed by the response!!! You've all made me blush haha!

It's mean a lot coming from fellow orgers. Covering a Prince tune is risky business, so I try to keep it true to myself whilst still honouring the elements of the song that made me love it in the first place.

If you guys are interested I'll definitely more of my tracks up on here when I upload them. If you can, also give my Facebook page a like, it really helps me get better profile gigs and better venues.

Peace and B Wild,

Most of time I am MEH on any Prince cover...but this is nice. And how you sing it is good for your voice...

and the song after..."until that day arrives" ? Is that you as well?

When I read the title of the thread I thought "Some cat covering Damn U? That can only be a complete disaster". And it wasn't. You did a pretty good job and respected the source material alright. My only critic might be that it lacks a certain swing: the beat/rhythm section is a little too robotic and some of the sensuality gets lost because of it. But apart from that I'm quite impressed nod

I agree completely with that man, thank you for the feedback. I played the piano, the guitar and the bass live over a drum track that I programmed. It's hard to get that human element when you record with midi sometimes. I'm still learning though so I'll get the hang of it.

All I can say is that I listened to this from start to finished and really enjoyed it. I don't know if I can say that about any other Prince cover song.

You beat the shit out of Tom Jones. And someone should have done that by now for butchering a Prince song.

I always tought Marilyn Manson was the only one allowed to make covers, since in many cases he´s better than the original, but your cover is awesome! Congrats!

Very smooth voice and yes you made it your own. I'm impressed! Please keep sharing, growing, and exploring. It is young people like you that give me hope of taking established music genres and exposing it for re-appreciation!

It is your hometown that took American R&B and rock & roll, put their own spin on it and sold it back to us!

You kind of favor this chap a little!

Such beautiful songs. I think you truly did them justice. It was wonderful that you kept true to so much of the phrasing and inflections, but it still had enough of an individual nuance to allow it to be your cover rather than some "faded photograph"

As said before, a lot of pros (hint hint Madonna) could not find the balance of honoring and keeping true to themselves. I applaud you sir.
