Never get married....Father's song appreciation thread The piano piece titled "father's song"has always been beautiful to me and powerful in the film. It would have worked nice as a interlude to computer blue IMO. I've also wondered if a longer version exist. Prince always came up with the prettiest melodies:) "love's the only drug we do in here"-Prince

like Mama (1984) I wonder if Father's Song had any lyrics
Father! Father? The son is gone Father! Father? Where is the Dawn? Where is the Dawn Father!?

Although its only a minute or so long, this is one of the best things Prince wrote IMO ... love to hear a longer version. www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

That statement Prince's father in the movie told him combined with the performance he had just gave on piano has always been very deep to me. and revealed alot about the real Prince's upbringing and a great scene before computer blue. It was powerful. "love's the only drug we do in here"-Prince

...and we suddenly recognize the MUSIC
Father's Song is an unreleased song recorded on 29 October, 1983 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. It was included as the ninth track on a 7 November, 1983 configuration of Purple Rain. The song appears in the Purple Rain movie, where Prince's character "The Kid" plays the song on piano after discovering his father's sheet music for the song. The main melody was then included as a section in Computer Blue. The song itself, however, remains unreleased. - PrinceVault
Computer Blue:The song was composed by Prince & the Revolution, with credit to his father, John L. Nelson for the guitar solo based on an untitled piano piece by Nelson. Prince titled the piece "Father's Song" and recorded it on piano for the film, though on screen it was portrayed as being played by Prince's on-screen father, actor Clarence Williams III. -PrinceVault

at least he incorporated it into guitar during the bridge in Computer Blue
Even in 2008 he mentioned a similar story about what his father told him, I would like to think it was a wise advice for him as a teenager and not as an adult

Just like "An honest man"from the UTCM opening scene a clear studio version of both would be cool. "love's the only drug we do in here"-Prince

. Why would this be necessary, when 'Computer Blue' already interprets most of this piece, which section of the song itself serves as an 'interlude' into other parts of the suite that follow in the unedited track, and in the released version/sequencing helps build up to 'Darling Nikki'. . Its use in the film makes sense in advancing the [simplistic] story, but on an commercially released album, it does not 'compute'. . It is a hauntingly beautiful piano-and-effects track, nevertheless. . [Edited 3/5/17 9:42am]

Not only one of my favorite Prince songs, also one of my favorite piano pieces. I always play a version of it when playing piano in public, but nothing compares to the original. "Like the drummer said, you got to die."

Of course there's a studio version. It's not circulating, but it last 5 minutes and 15 seconds according to those who claim to have heard it. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

Even the "elite" collectors don't have it? Someone said a clean version of the movie version was circulating but I really hope there's some hope for the full studio version.
Supposedly there's a cassette with it somewhere with "God" registered in copyright:
