What was the verdict with Prince Estate vs TIDAL?
I notice that some of Prince songs are on other streaming services. I am assuming that TIDAL could not prove that there was a written contract between them and Prince. I don't have TIDAL but I hear some songs were taken off of TIDAL and if that is the case I am pleased. TIDAL/ Jay Z obviously took advantage of Prince.

No all the songs are still there. Tidal takes some down and then puts others up. In addition the court is allowing Tidals claim to go forward as the day they have a signed letter of intent and proof the have him 3 million dollars up front and the want to keep the music on for the rest of the term of the contract and get the two albums they say they are owed. They do not appear to have exclusivity so of course the music is on other platforms it does not mean it is going off a Tidal anytime soon.

Can you provide a source for this? I never saw this site give any updates with this or maybe I missed it.

Actually the main question I have as a TIDAL subscriber, just because of the PRINCE deal... Now that all other streaming sites are legally allowed to stream his WB catalouge, will TIDAL be updating their list of new upcoming PRINCE releases?
As of now TIDAL is the only streaming service that does not have his latest release PRINCE4EVER... Making me wonder if it's end and done for any new PRINCE releases for TIDAL.

I wondered the same thing. Now, I'm wondering will Tidal have the PR remastered available when it comes out in June. :Pop Life live in Detroit:

Tidal attempted to get an emergency Temporary Restraining Order against the Estate to stop the streaming on Sunday. It was denied by the Estate Judge. There is a claim filed by Tidal against the Estate, and a separate federal lawsuit filed by the Estate against Tidal for copyright infringement. Nothing has been settled as of this date.

Just knowing that Tidal is doing this is enough reason for me to NEVER support their streaming service. Tidal/JayZ

Go to the court docs it is at the beginning of the Estate topic and we are discussing it more toward the end.

It will be a new WB release so I doubt it. Tidal claims they are owed two releases one they have and one they are waiting on. I think those release will close out the deal with Tidal.

If Tidal paid Prince 3 million how did they do anything to him? Prince constantly talked about the service in a good way because he was getting paid. It is not anything more compilcated them that.
I cannot even understand why the music cannot be on Tidal along with other Plateforms like other artist. Why are the estate managers hell bent on pulling the music off of Tidal even to the point of causing a lawsuit?

Tidal/JayZ Prince chose Tidal and provided the service with exclusive material up until the week of his passing. He certainly did not chose Spotify and openly spoke against them. The estate is making decisions in the best financial interests but some of these are clearly contrary to Prince's last known public wishes. What Tidal is doing is trying to defend the original streaming deal Prince made and was clearly happy with.

Well it is not just his wished. It is also the fact that he was getting a higher royalty rate. What is so terrible about that. If you read the media you would think he made a decision to kill someone. In the meantime Taylor Swift is not on Sportify and it is not a big deal. Something is wrong with this picture.

Did a Tidal have a signed agreement? At last glance in the Estate thread it seemed there was no signature with Tidal.
Have no idea what Prince was really thinking in April but he put out on his twitter to support record stores and to purchase HNR II... Also not sure he would feel re the WB press release wording plus how did WB get back in the picture w/streaming? Thought Prince owned his master recordings sorry off topic. I am not sure how any Prince fan would support TIDAL after how Jay Z lied to Prince.

It's difficult to tell whether Tidal has signed documents because the documents have been filed under seal, or heavily redacted. Tidal withheld documents from the Estate (which they requested back in May 2016) until January 2017. There appears to be two documents, Artist Equity Term Sheet, and Letter of Intent. The Court filings by the Estate state the Equity Term Sheet was not signed. There were also filings which state one was signed by P individually, and one was signed by his LLC's (NPG Music) Tidal also states there have been oral agreements between P and Tidal (sounds like something P would do.) The Estate argues even if the Equity Term Sheet is valid (which they deny) it did not prevent P from using other streaming services. So to answer your question, I dont know if there are any signed documents. It's a hot mess.

But wasn't Jay Z trying to buy Prince music catalog knowing he would not have want that? Lets not act like TIDAL is innocent either.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because Jay Z wasn't paying certain artists on TIDAL and he is shady. He was putting Prince songs on TIDAL that was not in this "contract"

Similar to what Taylor Swift has with 1989, it's streaming only with Apple Music and not on any other platform because of her deal with apple. Prince had a deal with Tidal that gave exclusive rights to steam for a certain amount of time. If Tidal had the rights to stream only forever the deal with the other platforms would not have had happened. You see Hit n Run is on Apple so Prince left some wiggle room to put music on other plateforms if he wanted too. At this point the court has decided that Tidal exclusivity so this part of the issue is done however, Tidal is being allowed to go forward with their claim so that must have some signed documentation and some proof of payment. Why do some of you think Prince was tricked by Jay-Z as if he was some moron. If he got the money out of Tidal that he wanted he was not being tricked and he was still sending material to Tidal not long before he passed. Get off this nonsense already.

TIDAL ain't shit to me and never will be shit. I don't care really I just care about Prince getting his money and what he is owed. I also hope that the Estate is able to keep his music.

I am sure somewhere down the road Univesrsal will make an offer to buy everything they want to own the material as a large corporation they are not going to be interested in working with estate for the long haul. I also doubt we the fans we see vault material we want to see as long as Umiversal is involved. [Edited 2/18/17 11:26am]

Just the fact that Tidal is concerned about keeping finacial information under seal and are worried about the IRS means money is involved. I am not sure why some of you are hell bent on believing this was some freebie deal. [Edited 2/18/17 14:20pm]
