What's Your Playlist for Prince Newbie's? After lots of time away from the catalog--I'm having an amazing time on Spotify digging in deep. My wife said to me--so, you're just going to be playing Prince all the time now, huh? Yep!

This is sort of impossible to answer without knowing what other music the person listens to. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You are so right. I could have made a dance mix. A ballads mix. A rock mix. A funk mix. etc. etc. I tried to cover a lot of different bases in my mix.

You can't make a playlist for newbie without the classics like 1999, LRC,WDC,Purple Rain,LGC,SOTT,Kiss,IWDFY,7 and Rasperry Beret.

I'ev always found it easier to turn folks on to Prince with his 80s output, then try to introduce them to his 90s/00s output. I've been burning and giving this CD away for years, almost exactly 1h20min... ------ She's Always in my Hair (Extended) Feel U Up (Extended) Irresistible Bitch Pop Life 17 Days When Doves Cry Strange Relationship How Come U Dont Call Me Anymore Kiss Susannah's Pajamas Girls and Boys Housequake The Beautiful Ones Shockadelica (Extended) Starfish and Coffee Rockhard in a Funky Place Make it so, Number One...

Wow, I listened almost non-stop the first few months, it'll probabably take me a few years to catch up with some of you here I'll check out Susannah's Pajamas and Rockhard in a Funky Place Thank you!

It completely depends whom you're making the playlist for. I would make entirely different playlists depending on different people's musical tastes... A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Gives a good insight to the rocker/funkster/balladeer/prodigy that he was, without choosing big hits that the average person would know. Still discovering his 90s material so I can't have any say on that.

Couldn't answer that as others have said it depends on what the person likes. I certainly wouldn't include any of the pop hits they've listened to a million times. And which do not not really touch on Prince as an artist. I would say to have them explore on their own.

As others said, it depends on the person. I've put a few of my friends on to Prince. They knew almost nothing about him except Dave chapelle and Purple Rain (although my generation generally respects P as an American icon & legend regardless). What really resonated with my friends (who mostly fuck with contemp R&B and alternative hip hop) was P from the 90s. Light up a few spliffs and play Joy in Repetition, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, Days of Wild, maybe even a little bit of Bob George and Superfunky, 7, Sexy MF, Good Life, Space, The Flow, and of course some 80s gems like Something in the Water, 17 Days, and the original OF4S. "Wow bro I thought Prince had only guitar music and shit. His music's trippy!" Maybe do, just not like did before

"Wow bro I thought Prince had only guitar music and shit. His music's trippy!" Exactly. Prince is not one thing. Prince is so different in even in its own eras. I personally think these type of "lists" will turn people off to Prince than vice versa. And doubly so any list originating from prince.org.

Well.. I actually think if playlists are created and curated into the different types of music, that would be more effective and educational. I think if any artist needed curated lists is Prince. The Beatles have a lot of different curated lists on the different types of Beatles music, but Prince more than almost anyone, has some of the most far ranging sounds. From the soft jazzy stuff, the pop, the R&B, the funk, rock, psychedelic, ballads, the electronic, the acoustic, the experimental, live, the side acts, the music for others, the hodgepodge homogenous stuff, the quirky, on and on. I'm sure someone has already created curated lists like that on Spotify for him by now, so for a newbie, I think I would just say to them to just explore and let them know how vast his breadth as an artist is beforehand so they know what to expect and not pigeonhole him. Send them to the more stylistically curated lists than to simplify him into his pop hits. I think those top hits list only marginilizes him and turns a bigger audience away. Hey! I really appreciate what everyone has shared! There's definitely some overlap with my original list and some cool variations. Some deep songs! I look forward to the day when I can catch up with the post-1995 work which I don't know as well. So much more Prince to discover! (Both released and yet-to-be-released)

As a bit of an addendum here this review of the re-release of ChangesoneBowie is worth a read.
