No When Doves Cry at Piano & Microphone shows

I was always a little surprised Prince didn't perform When Doves Cry at all during the Piano & Microphone shows. I wonder why. He performed nearly every other song off Purple Rain (except obviously Darling Nikki and Computer Blue). I think he could have done a beautiful version of it on piano. I wonder if there was a specific reason he chose not to perform it? confused

There's very little harmonic content in that song (pretty much drums and vocals for the most part) and the melody is pretty much consisting of only two notes, which makes it tricky to do it as a piano/vocal track - although seeing how he often reinvents arrangements for songs live, there's no reason why he couldn't have done the same for this one.

True. I just love the song and think it got short shrift during live performances. I hated it just being part of a sampler set.

This version that a choir of 2,000 people did is amazing.

I wish but I don't think he did anywhere. And the only show I don't have audio of (New Zealand) is the only show where he performed The Ladder. Dang the estate needs to release these shows!

He didn't perform it live very much at all. He did it on the PR, Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy tours and (very) occasionally at the Nude tour, but after that... Maybe he thought it just didn't work in concert?

According to people I've heard from on the Org, When Doves Cry does sound a little weird live, lacks the epic quality of the album version. He probably wasn't fully satisfied with how it sounded, so he excluded it from most of his post-80's tours.

When Doves Cry will always be one of my favorite Prince songs. I still have the special edition 45 of it in purple vinyl. I paid 99 cents for it in 1984.

From what's lurking around...he did played WDC at a afterparty somewhere down under, at one of the P&M shows in Oakland and Montreal. However, it's just the sampler set version

He did play the Ladder at the 2nd Paisley Park show. My friends and I were talking about what songs we wanted to hear and that was at the top of my list.

Yep. He almost did the whole Purple Rain album on that tour. I love the Nude Tour version of When Doves Cry. IMO Purple Rain tour was the best version though.

Several of my friends were part of that event! I would have gone too, but my daughter was just about 3 weeks old and we had our hands full.

Which show? At Oracle arena? I have the other Oakland shows and he didn't play it at either of them. And I didn't think he used guitar at all in these shows unless he was doing something like the sampler set?

It was the sampler according to Prince Vault... http://princevault.com/in...March_2016

And here's the concert reviews to confirm it... http://prince.org/msg/12/422179

I thought I heard him say that his mother didn't like the lyrics to WDC...maybe considering the intimacy of the show and the tributes to his father, he felt it didn't work.

After hearing WDC at Oracle I'm glad he didn't do it at any other show. The sampler set version just doesn't fit. I do wish he did The Ladder at more shows. So amazing. Also amazing is Act of God/Unchain My Heart from Sydney. πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

He did a full version of WDC at one, perhaps both, of the Welcome2Canada shows in Toronto in 2011. It was wonderful and he looked absolutely gorgeous.

Yes - I was there and in tears with many others when he played The Ladder - definitely a highlight from all the shows I've lucky enough to see

I have a video of Prince singing When Doves Cry in concert in Tokyo in approximately 1990.

And it is spectacular.
