Don't Play Me is magnificent! Wow, just wow. Love the album but this song is great, hands down. |

Good taste TKO, I have always been partial to the Truth as a song as well as Don't play me, other side of the pillow, Deonne and circle of amour. |

And they served to widen the breadth of his studio recorded artistry considerably! |

Prince was never a good judge of his own material. If he were, he wouldn't have buried A Large room with no light, Empty Room, Beautiful Strange, Glasscutter, Electric Intercourse, and the Grand Progression in unrelased or limited release limbo and then released music like Jughead.
Comeback, Other side of the pillow, and Dionne are disasters? God, i couldn't disagree more. I have seen at least a couple different writers list two of these songs as some of prince's most underrated work.

Im with you 100% purplerabbithole...
and Dionne is hands down one of his most amusing original cleverly crafted songs...Its stands alone in some ways...in the same way Parade Stands Alone amongst his albums as uncatagorisable..ungenrefied..I know they arent proper words..but you know...LOL

Pointing out that a song is not new and intimating that some of us already know of its greatness is not being a bully.
The world has heard this song. Not only was it released 19 years ago, Prince has performed it a number of times - perhaps most notably at the 2006 Webby Awards.
Therefore, MYOB and STFU.

Everybody that posts here knows that, I am glad you received your military promotion recently to Captain Obvious.
It is a pretty good song, why not try posting something constructive rather than petty and critical? |

I did post an opinion earlier on (It simply stated I liked don't play me and several other songs on the album The Truth")
I just wanted to point out that your original post was not helpful to promoting discussion by telling the poster when the song was released. Sadly nothing is new under the sun with Prince dead, but luckily Prince has many songs and albums that require revisiting and discussion unlike say Amy Winehouse, or Buddy Holly who did not have thirty years of recording.
I do not want a Graffiti Bridge style battle with you and have tempered this response, trying not to cause offense or antagonize. I just think we all need to try and respond in order to help threads flourish.
To continue the discusion of Don't play me" The crisp guitar playing, and non-verbal harmonies are so pretty. I really paid attention to the song when I got Crystal Ball, and I think lyrics which have some of his most honest and introspective view of how he saw himself in the music industry. It not only offers humor "I put my ass away" , self possession "Don't play me, I already do in my car" and poignant social commentary "Maybe how you call us 'niggers' ain't the same" and this gem with a classic Prince ego "I'm the wrong color and I play guitar My only competition is well me in the past"
This ladies and Gentleman is a songwriter unfurling another classic sleeper album track, that many will not hear unless we invite people in.

Do you play guitar? Or want to learn? Because if so, I have something that will be of great interest to you.

Yes I do play guitar, I am getting back into it after a few years so anything of interest would be greatly appreciated, if I read you correctly. |
