Prince and Owen Husney Why did Prince say in interview with Larry King that name of his first manager escapes him? it cant be that he forgot it.was there an argument or something?

That was classic Prince shade.

But why..? | |

I noticed that also. Husney was really upset about the loss of Prince. It's a shame that Prince did that.

Who knows what went on within those relationships? Perhaps P had good reason to answer in such a way.

.
Husney had a partner/investor named Davidson, there was Pepe Willie, there was Morris' mom and other short-timers. Even Chris Moon did some management. . ...and P was always nervous in interviews. It might have been an actual lapse. [Edited 2/11/17 20:50pm] Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Prince might have actually forgotten, but I doubt it. P had a mind like a steel trap.

Zach Hoskins wrote about some of this in his blog. Looking back on it all from the outside, it does seem sad. https://princesongs.org/2.../miss-you/ [Edited 2/11/17 21:07pm]

Oh, I see what you mean. I know that Pepe was married to Prince's cousin and had him to play with his band on a couple of records and Morris Day's mom acted in a management capacity for Grand Central. Still, isn't it well-documented that Owen Husney was P's first manager, who brokered the Warner Bros. deal?

Owen Husney note: He went on to manage Jesse Johnson for quite few years. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

It was completely unnecessary shade, and who knows why Prince chose to be a dick in that moment? Husney got Prince the best deal in history for a newly signed artist.

Not one of his more endearing qualities for sure Owen and his wife both seemed very fond of him and worked very hard for him when they were involved. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Now pretend he realized he was on CNN, giving an interview. CNN, AOL, Warner's were all owned by the conglomerate AOLTIMEWARNER. Now pretend this "great contract," from the 70's had a NDA clause, or a golden parachute clause. If PRN mentions OH's name, and some ambitious author, reporter, journalist, etc. wanted to get a side of the story that was an antithesis to PRN's...

It is. My take: ppl who found themself in a parental position in relation to P and then disappointed/frustrated him in some way were likely to have him act out much more extremely than would seem normal. I think that applies to WB as well. And may have something to do with the fact that he didn't have anyone in that position in the last half of his life. Not like I love my guitar....

Here's a great interview with Owen Husney, who now teaches at UCLA and is working on his memoir. He tells great Prince stories but ends with, perhaps, a clue as to why Prince might have been unhappy with him. According to Husney, it seems that Prince felt, for lack of a better word, deserted by him. At least, that's my takeaway from this delicious interview. Below is what I think is the most relative portion, relative to the OP's question. .

Pepe want back and told Owen what Prince said. The next day Prince fired him. For someone who had no businees acumen he knew enough to get rid of a manager who was getting 10% of the income who does not believe in his vision. Prince was not always right but he was not always wrong.

I didn't say he didn't have people who cared, there were clearly a ton of people who cared. That's different from people who are in a parental position i.e. who care and have some authority/control over you. And I'm not saying it's bad that he didn't have that, although arguably there also were relatively few people who cared and were in a position of equality with him, and that might have been. I'm fairly positive there is a ton of stuff that went down in his life that we don't know about... [Edited 2/12/17 7:15am]

NOt that simple.
It sounds like the breakup was a combination of Prince's impatience with the progress of his career and his distrust of his manager, Willie's instigation/manipulation and Owen's ambivalence. Prince's ego wasn't the only one that was the problem. Lots of misunderstanding and no one with enough humility to talk it out. Owen and his wife may have done much for Prince, but they still got their 10%. Business and personal feelings when intermingled are often hazy. Imagine what Prince thought when Willie relayed the message that Prince was just some 'singer' Owen wasn't that interested in. Its one thing for OWen to explain to Prince that his job can't and shouldn't be getting him space heaters, its another thing to act as if Prince was no more than a meal ticket to him (and secondary to his other job). NOt saying Owen did that, but I am saying that is the impression Prince probably had (due to either Owen's words or Pepe's version of his words). Owen was right in that it was probably more painful and hurtful of a break than just the breakup of a manager and an artist. But what many fail to consider is that it was probably just as painful for Prince. (thus, the long letter, the inconsistent attitude Prince had toward Owen in later years.)
Plus, Owen has been interviewed about Prince while he was still alive. Maybe he was being interviewed in 1999 and Prince took a disliking to the fact.
