Does anyone have the 1983 cassette of 1999 with How Come U Don't Call Me? Reportedly HCUDCMA is 2 or 3 seconds longer on it than on the original 1999 single and on The B-Sides and Girl 6, could someone please verify that?
.
Thx |

IIRC it was a non-US version that was the single album version. If it was longer I suspect it had to do more with conversion or that it was not properly sequenced.
1999 had something like 6 versions: US had 3: the original track order on the LP, the cassette with "Free" moved after DMSR to make the 2 sides more even. The original CD (minus DMSR).
Outside had: a single LP and a single tape with the bonus "HCUDCMA" and a few markets may have had it sold in 2 parts. (this is something I have heard but never saw) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

There is a copy of this very cassette for sale on eBay (US) currently.
.
Are you certain that the added time count isn't created by the effects of tape playback?
.
This version, which seems to have been somewhat common in the UK, has both HCYDCMA and DMSR, each of which serving as the closing track to its respective side of the cassette.
.
(DMSR was omitted from a number of non-US cassette releases).

I used to have it, it was very common in France and it was in fact my first 1999. It's that one and it originated in 1983 https://www.discogs.com/f...se/8309547
I don't remember any difference between HOCDUCMA there and on The B-Sides but I could perfectly not have noticed and it all goes back to 25 years ago. The info comes from Squirrelmeat who usually knows his shit, only it's from memory and he can't check it to be sure. I'm certain someone else here still has it and a cassette player
So IDK, it may be what you say Imprimis but we need someone to check it out |

That is true. It seems an obscure thing to pirate, if that is what you are suggesting, however. At the same time, the era-inconsistent cassette casing and what seems to be poorly handled graphic design (truncated oddly at the folds, Batman/GB-era fonts, suspicious UPC, etc) support that suggestion. It could still be a late-era international release, which though officially sanctioned, tended to have different quality assurance.
.
There is the old white-plastic and paper-label version available on a number of other sites.

This reminds me of the often-used joke on "The Big Bang Theory" where the guys are going to see a science fiction classic that has been re-released with 20 additional seconds that change the entire movie. |

It would be nice to hear his cooing continue just a few more seconds at the end, wouldn't it? Hopefully, it's like 'Joy in Repetition' on the cassette release of GB, with its extended fadeout.

It was not on the one I purchased here in the good old US of A. The song was on the flip side of the 45 of 1999 which I still have. Parents had excellent speakers and being a record you can actually hear him on the pedals.
I actually went out purchased the cassette again after the first one broke and HCUDCM was still not on the cassette. |

They did on the CD when it first came out in like 1987 or so. There's a note on the back of the CD case noting it, too. I was so pissed when I saw that for the first time. I didn't buy it. Ironically about a year or two ago, I found that CD in a record store and bought it. So I have both US versions now, with and without "DMSR". I suppose that's when CDs only went to 74 minutes or so, and 1999 was beyond that.

What is the last thing Prince sings at the end of the song?
"Why on earth can't you just pick up the phone? You know I don't like to be alone. Why? Why must you torture me?"
That's all I've ever been able to make out.

Thats a good point.
It was me, in a discussion a few years ago, that pointed out to Databank that I remember a version of HCYDCMA lasting a fraction longer. Now, I only mean a fraction, on the fade.
Now it could be that it did last 2 seconds more, or it could be error if:
1. I was comparing into to a vinyl source which faded short.
2. As you say, its an illusion due to tape stretch.
I can't say either way, as I can't find the original cassette. I may have sold my copy when I offloaded a lot or rarer stuff in 2005.
Interestingly, the 1998 rerelease states a 3:52 version, rather than the usual 3:50.
The version on cassette I'm refering to was definately not a clear cassette. It predates those. . |

I'm meaning to say the version where Side A ends with 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?', and Side B ends with 'DMSR', with all the normal 1999 album tracks present, and allowing some sequencing latitude for balancing against the lengths/limitations of the cassette format.
.
Side A
01 - 1999
02 - Little Red Corvette
03 - Delirious
04 - Free
05 - How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore
.
Side B
01 - Let's Pretend We're Married
02 - Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)
03 - Lady Cab Driver
04 - D.M.S.R.
.
Although, 'Free' or 'Let's Pretend We're Married' seem more deserving of the axe than 'Automatic'. [Edited 2/7/17 11:48am] |

Its removal may have seemed the best of all possible worlds sacrifice at the time, in that it was available on the 'Risky Business' soundtrack in 1983.

I thought the same at first then realized that original releases on the 1999 single tracked... 3:54
I have no idea where Princevault got all their tracks lengths from, I know they usually don't fit my CD or mp3 files but I've decided to correct all tracks length on my discog to match theirs nonetheless, for the sake of clarity. |

In 1984 to be precise. IDK the exact release date but all sources concur to say 1984, so I'd assume early 84. Oddly enough it seems the OST was released at around the same time the VHS was released, not at the time the movie was released in theatres.
I doubt it had much to do with anything though, Risky Business was far from being a major movie and its soundtrack far from being a major charts hit. |
