The Beatles' 9th album was called The Beatles.

In Prince's case, it's probably just a calculated thing where the first album basically stiffed (no TV, radio exposure outside of some Minneapolis R&B radio), so he planned the 2nd one to be way more commercial and to be his breakthrough (which it was). In that case, it's easy for people to remember if there's just one word for the artist and the title.

Didnt Whitney have a Whitney Houston AND a Whitney? Not to mention Seal's albums only differentiated by I-V with the seemingly random 'Human Being' as the outlier. There is no SCIENCE or rule to which album(s) are eponymous and why

He called his albums Santana?

I hear Don and Glenn had some injunction on him using his own name, claiming ownership of his mortal soul.... so yeah. What's a man to do? Randy needed to get those tunes out there somehow.

How about Seal's albums? LOL First 2 albums with the same title.

Debut does not always have to be Eponymous. In fact many artists have fun with their names on an album.

Whitney Houston (1985) is the first album, Whitney (1987) the second.

David Bowie (1967) was eponymous, but it is more known as "Love you til Tuesday" or the "Laughing Gnome" and the 2nd album is also called David Bowie (1969) (Also known as Man of Music, Man of Vision and more commonly Space Oddity).

.

Barbra Streisand had her first 3 albums called the Barbra Streisand album, except there was a first, second or third in front of them.

.

The Beatles was a name for the fourth album, but also known as Beatles for sale.

.

Prince wanted the first album to be called For You, as he saw it as a gift to his friends and backers, particularly in the MPLS area and also as a love offering to the object of his affection in most of the songs on it. Prince may have called the second album Prince, for many reasons such as.

.

1. He was wanting simpler things, and wanted it to appeal and probaby thought - I wanna be your lover, was too long a name and maybe "I feel 4 u" or "Sexy Dancer" was too forthright.

.

2. He knew that For You, had barely existed outside a few thousand people and was not a mainstream success, so for many new listeners bought in by Lover, would have thought Prince was his first album. This myth persisted in Britain and Europe for a long time. Even here in NZ and Australia, Prince was the first album poperly released here, with 4U only showing up in 1984. Before then you would have had gone to the States and bought it back.

.

3. A simple name and catchy photo, would sell copies especially to the dazed out disco dancers.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

you're right, i'm getting old and not remembering all the million things i've read about Prince. Right from the get go, chris moon suggested sexually explicit lyrics and we had soft and wet on his first album. I guess I just see prince as not really being crass, being kind of a doe eyed innocent up until dirty mind. He was a different guy before stardom.

I really don't believe that For you was just meant for a small segment of people. Prince had his eyes on the prize and was too eager to please, hence the title. everything about the album seemed to be designed to impress. The result was him going way overbudget, burning out in the studio and coming up with a finely produced album that really never impressed me as far as basic songcraft. Yes he had all the harmonies, the guitar and the keyboard riffs but there really isn't a song on there aside from Baby that I like. He admits he went straight pop with the next album to prove he could sell records (his words). Funny thing is, once he came out with Dirty Mind the record company wanted to cut it's losses and offered him his contract back, he went from innuendo to perversion and from wannabe teen idol to sexual deviant. Warners had to wonder if they were wrong to sign the guy.
