Was Prince a stutterer?

I once read in an article that Prince in private was rather soft-spoken, mumbling and that he stuttered a bit.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to it until I watched the video that was taken of him during the recording with Mavis Staples (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMVoalxeISU).

At 4:36 you can see Prince closing his eyes, taking a deep breath, then some body movements (all typical stuttering symptoms) and then saying "M-mmmm-ost".

Being a stutterer myself I'm convinced that this was real stuttering.

Has this question ever been raised in any post before?

Having seen Prince in hours of footage in interviews and awards ceremonies and never seen him stutter I'd say no, probably not.

I don't think that clip show anything of the kind. Pausing to find the right words doesn't indicate stuttering, to me.

But if it makes you feel better to think Prince was like you - okay.

Some people don't stutter when in a different role, so reports from people who were close to him and experienced him in private situations might clear this up, but I guess that won't happen because they stil protect his private life.

I'm not making this up. If an interviewer writes that Prince "stutters", I do pay attention to it.

You may not be making it up (though a source/link would be good) - but you are clearly seeing what you want to see here. That's not stuttering.

i hear bruce lee stuttered when he got nervous. Probably a lot of people do that, i know i do and i'm not a stutterer. Only time I heard any reference to Prince stuttering was during the purple rain premiere in la, Alan Leeds said he stuttered when he got news of how much of a turnout the movie got.

I think Prince was just nervous. He also socially awkward and he suffered from anxiety. I think he was taking anti-anxiety medication too.

I can related because I suffer from anxiety especially speaking in public or around unfamilar surroundings. So yeah Prince's life and his personality mirrored mine.

How did you know that Prince took anti-anxiety medication? It's just a guess, right?

I guess he'd always wanted that because of his height and the insults that he experienced, but I'm not sure if these drugs were already available when he would have needed them.

People need to stop projecting their own personal attributes on Prince. He was his own man...and not you.

I haven't thought of him as having an actual stutter (I have a close relative with a true, lifelong challenge with it), but he appears to have a voluntary stutter in this video where you pointed it out.
I think he might've wanted to say something and direct Mavis, but slowed himself down out of respect for her equal talent.
Either that or he had a small unusual stutter as I, as a non-stutterer, suppose I have had a number of times in my life too.
I give those who stutter a lot of respect. I know what my relative has gone through. He is, by the way, a very successful man today and the ladies have always been crazy about him. He gives a lot of speeches and radio interviews and owns a successful business - and he still stutters. ๐Ÿ™‚

He simply believed he could succeed regardless.
He is one of the sweetest, most sensitive men I have ever known.

My brother also has a lifelong stutter, he started stuttering when he was 5 when my parents were going thru a divorce. It has never held him back, he had some trouble with kids when he was in school, but they soon learned that it was just him. BTW, when my brother gets really, really angry, he doesn't stutter a bit.

Maybe he did stutter a little in that clip, but that doesn't make it a lifelong issue. Everyone stutters occasionally. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

Google is your friend about finding articles that he was taking Xanax and it was found by the police. Also check with StarTribune articles.

People who suffers from anxiety tend to stutter at environments where they are not familar. I know this because I suffer from anxiety myself.

If he did stutter it was more out of nervous maybe link to his anxiety. I watched numerous of his interviews and he spoken clearly yet I notice he was more cautious before he spoke. He also looked nervous. Public speaking and doing interviews are not his thing but he tried.

He also had history of depression and he admitted this in his interviews. Depression and anxiety are often connected.

And I really wish people need to stop hijack threads because they have dull lives outside the org just to start arguments. And also everyone tried to relate themselves to Prince all the time whether through a song or a story of his life, so whats wrong with that? People who are smart enough know Prince was his own person no need for reminder. Because we want to feel more connected with him even if he is no with us. But this post doesn't refer to you patchab, so no offense.

A true stutter'er doesn't just hesitate before they speak, they actually have problems forming the words. There are people who are true stutters but in certain conditions do not stutter. For example Mel Tillis, he is a true stutter'er but when he sings he doesn't stutter. My brother is a true stutter'er but when he's very, very angry he doesn't stutter. Along with stuttering, they also have facial ticks when they are trying to get the words out.

.

Prince is/was not a true stutter'er.

Maybe you need to stop hijacking threads, since the thread #6 on Prince is now closed. neutral

You think you are a mirror of Prince. lol And you also think that you are a mod. and claim to know, what, when, and who they are going to ban.

There will never be another Prince, and you will never be a mod.

I don't think anyone truly stutters when they sing. I stutter from time to time (thankfully, it's not bad), so in my research on how to, well, NOT stutter, I read that it's not possible to stutter when you're singing or swearing (might explain why your brother doesn't stutter when he's angry).

No way. My brother is one and there is no way he would have been able to play that one off for hours on stage and go straight to stuttering when he's in private.
