Prince always said that he stayed in Chanhassen because he could go to the store, walk around his neighborhood, go out in public, and no one would bother him. He liked being able to act like a "regular Joe" in his own town. Being able to ride a bike without being filmed or photographed was not something new for Prince. And are you young? Growing up, we rode our bikes in parking lots, around the streets, in the streets, on the sidewalks, everywhere. AND we rode them without helmets. It's amazing we survived! We used to ride in our cars without seat belts, too! eek

I just want to thank the folks (media and the lady filming) who made it possible for me to get info on a man I cared about. You asked if I'm young because you didn't read my post before you dazzled me with your youthful antics. smile AGAIN, Prince and I were the same age. Now if I can get the real cause of his deterioration I would be even happier. [Edited 1/30/17 23:05pm]

lol - Reading *is* fundamental. I had missed your last sentence. I was amazed at your amazement of riding a bike around in a parking lot. lol Prince loved being able to be himself in Minne, though, without everyone bothering him. If I'm not mistaken, there is a website in which his neighbors in Chanhassen were leaving their condolences and then talking about their neighbor, Prince, seeing him around town, in the grocery store, shopping somewhere. It was quite fascinating how the most recognizable man on earth, was able to just be an ordinary man in his own town. I actually gained a lot of respect for the citizens of Chanhassen because of that.

There was also an interview with someone, forget who, in whom Prince told that he wanted a bike. The guy kept telling Prince that he would order him a bike but he wanted him to wear a helmet, too. I forget exactly how Prince's response went, but it was essentially that Prince don't wear no helmet. lol I adore that man, will always adore him. I'll be 90 and on my deathbed, Prince CD playing in the background, me singing along, and my last word, with my last breath will be "Oowwwaahhh".

Yes, I read that too, very funny story.

Hayes: I took him to the bike store and I bought him a bike because he said he wanted a bicycle. I got him all sized up for it, and then I told him, "Okay, Prince, I'm only buying this bike if you get a helmet." And he said, "I don't want a helmet." I said, "Well, I'm not buying this bike, sir, if you don't get a helmet—you have to ride with a helmet or else I can't be responsible for you being on this bike." He says, "Well, I don't want a helmet." I said, "I'll get you a cool one—and I'll get one, too." So we got the helmets, but I found out later that he was riding the bike and he didn't wear it.

I do not know where you grew up if you are the same age as Prince. I am only a few years younger and I don't remember anyone wearing a helmet w hen I was coming up and I rode on sidewalks in the streets, across lawns and in parking lots.

A guy P's age would not have cared about a bike land or a helmet.

Morris had another story about going to the local hardware store with Prince one winter, asking Prince to stay in the car while he went in the store. All of a sudden he sees Prince walking down the isle with a bunch of stuff in his hands that he wants to buy. Morris asks him what about the car. Prince says he left it running. Morris freaks out and says you can't leave the car running someone will steal it to which Prince replies, deadpan, "Morris, it's Chanhassen, nobody is going to steal the car". lol

P's just a lil bit older than me and when we all were kids helmets were only for motocycles and only when they were going long distances, not for riding around town cuz you had to look cool. Lol

Anyway, a helmet would've squished P's "fro.

lol

I just thought of something...

Ok, P was a grownazzed man with googobs of money to buy whatever he wanted at any time he wanted without asking anyone's permission or assistance.

Yet he had that conversation about it with Morris Hayes even though he could've simply walked around him, ignored his concerns, paid for the bike and left riding it, but he didn't and ended up getting the helmet anyway, even if he didn't wear it.

There's a certain sweetnes in that, no?

Yes I can just imagine the looks when I'm in the old folks home and peeps see me with pics of sexy Prince on my iPad, like WHAT THE HELL? smile

And I think there is probably a difference between what we'll do as kids and what we'll do as adults, especially now that there ARE bike lanes everywhere and we know about careless drivers backing out of parking places and how bikes can zoom around quickly, one moment a driver path is clear, next moment a bike!

But anyway, looks like Prince will forever remain a mystery.

I grew up in the age of no helmet, no knee pads, no bike lanes and drunk driving was a slap on the wrist. I made it through like a lot of us.

Every since I read CJ's article on seeing Prince riding his bike I got protective, even with him not here I still cringe thinking about what she described seeing.

I guess I'm still a kid at heart then. I ride my bike without a helmet, don't use bike lanes, and essentially ride it the way I always have. *blush* Some old habits die hard. Honestly, if I worried about everything that might happen to me, I'd be living in a protective bubble never leaving my home. We all gotta die some day, before I let that happen ... I'm going to live life without fearing what might go wrong and enjoy doing what I like doing.

lol I love that story about Prince! There are a lot of ways in which it seemed Prince was naive about things, had an innocence to him, but dang if that man also had a sophistication and worldliness to him, too. He was the ultimate Gemini, displaying both sides of a coin, sometimes within the same breath.

fuck no we didn't wear no helmets people are too babied these days and it's a problem. Of course you don't want to crack your skull but people who look at themselves and their lives as so precious and special aren't very functional people. their pussies, we are raising nothing but babies these days.
