At what point did princes guitar playing become more melodic?

And why do you think that is?

Just asking because I say a replay of the super bowl press conference..and to me it seems that as he got older he just got better and better

You forget older stuff like "The Question of U" which dates to 1985, "The Passion" section of The Scandalous Sex Suite (1989), "Alexa De Paris" (1986). Those guitar melodies carry those songs as a whole, especially the two without lyrics. "Purple Rain" is certainly melodic as well.

I agree. His catalog includes melodic guitar work going back to the 80's.
