Songs fading out A pet peeve. i really hate it when the original version of a Prince song we love is swapped out for an edited version that fades out in the middle of a guitar solo or something. It's the worst cock-block ever. For that reason I found 4EVER to be largely unlistenable. Is it just me?
Similarly tonight I noticed the iTunes release of even the 1999 album isn't quite right - the title track just fades out in the middle of the "why does everybody have a bomb" bit, rather than the usual ending and transition into LRC. Has anyone spotted other examples? Had any success getting Apple / Warner / whoever to correct it? I hate the idea of people fucking with his music unnecessarily, especially now he's left us. If it brings people into the purple fold, it's done its job. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I thought 4Ever is a collection of the single edits which Prince decided on himself back in the day. So for some collectors it's a new digital source for a few edits that were only on single releases on vinyl and cassette. In some cases the single edit wasn't just a fade out, but a different production for a quick ending (I Would Die For U, Kiss). I remember a lot of fans weren't happy with how the album version of Kiss cut off the ending of the single that was on the radio. In that case, the album version was shorter!

Yeah radio edits are less offensive if you know that's what you're listening to I guess. Would never listen to them voluntarily though, personally. The 1999 thing I mentioned is more annoying because that's supposed to be the album version. [Edited 1/15/17 12:54pm]

Still fade outs, remind me of those cheep ass albums you bought back in the 70s and 80s that had like 10 songs on a side and songs were faded out to make way for another one. Here they were like Solid Gold Hits, and Hits force 87 type shit. . Albums that were released as songs dropped off the chart, usually big hits, but at least ¼ were songs that you had either never heard of, novelties or something that made it to #89 for 1 week. Even worse were the budget sound a likes, which were fake copies of actual hits like anything by Pickwick and Top of the Pops. . 4ever was a cheap, shitty korporate kash in at the end of the day, Moonbeam levels was a carrot dangled to ensure sales. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I assume you have noticed the differerence on the Sign O' the Times CD/Itunes versions? The track I'm referring to is "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man".
CD Version = 6:29 iTunes Version = 3:40
That one was a real shocker to me!! That's why I now stick to my CD rips.

I have a version of Lovesexy that is not only tracked, but every track fades out at the end. It's probably made for radio play. But yeah, every song has a fade on it. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I had no idea, that's lousy! Really, the albums are Prince's lasting legacy, I really feel I should, I dunno, petition Warner Bros to reinstate the original album versions. Or maybe just post on Prince.org to get it out of my system

It's just fuck ups with the digital catalogue, happens to loads of artists. Obviously it's not okay but it's common enough. Hopefully it'll be sorted if and when the catalogue is re-released. 4Ever at least had some 7" edits that weren't available on cd (or very hard to find) before but it also had obvious mess ups like the Mountains album version rather than the single version. I suspect if people had been paying attention to what they were doing they'd have also included the same versions of Gett Off and 7 as appeared on the Hits. [Edited 1/16/17 0:51am]

iTunes version is 6:29 in the Dutch store, but I think I indeed saw the shorter version on the album a while ago. Looks like they changed it back. SOTT is only € 5,99 on iTunes by the way!

Thats the point though. It shows up in UK iTunes as 6:29 but it actually plays the 3:40 edit. Go figure!?! [Edited 1/17/17 9:39am]

Wow, really? Looks like a mis-match in their catalogue or something like that.

I hate radio edits. I understand why they exist, I just always feel rooked when I encounter one. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

yes these are called "radio Edits"

Radio edits are imposed on artists by... radios, who wouldn't play songs longer than 3 or 4 minutes because listening tests shows that casual listeners often get tired of a song after 3/4 mn. The harsh laws of business. The fuck up on iTunes is unaccptable though, but then again record companies messing up with albums isn't a new thing: when I ripped my entire CD collection to digital I came to realize that certain albums I had weren't the original releases: either tracks order had been messed up with for a CD reissue, or the tracklist had been messed up with entirely, in order to add a certain non-album single in place of an album track and so on. Certain double LP's have also been edited in order to fit on one CD (typically Parliament's live album from 77, which I had to reconstruct because, thanks God, the missing track had been released on a compilation). I've had to look hard for certain original versions of certain albums, and some I've never been able to find because no one cared to rip an original vinyl and share it online. It's also common for certain classic jazz records to be "improved" by the labels (including some super important historical records!) making the original non existing on CD or digital. There are also cases of the artists "perfecting" records after they were released (Seal's first album, as well as Off The Wall, Bad and History: I'm still looking for an original version of Bad on digital, and it's virtually impossible to get it on CD unless you get to hear the CD before buying it, since nothing distinguishes second and later prints from the original print), or some albums being modified due to sampling licences issues (Björk's Post, typically). In terms of Prince, we could also note that a few other albums were messed up with one way or another: - Prince on CD features a single edit of Still Waiting, with the HD tracks version being the only existing digital version of the original album as such. How this ever happened, and whether Prince was responsible for this, remains unexplained. - The Chocolate Invasion on Tidal is the original, previously unreleased configuration of the album (which is pretty cool to have, but still...). It is unknown whether Prince did it on purpose or his crew picked the wrong version of the album in the vault when he told them to sent those out of print records to Tidal. - The cassette version of Graffiti Bridge featured an alternate ending to JIR, which remains unreleased on CD or digital (however the definitive version of the album would be the CD, and that was Prince's decision). - There also exists 2 versions of Rave, with the silent segue being either 4 or 8 seconds long! God knows what the fuck happened here! A fellow fan sending me a mp3 consisting of 8 seconds of silence for the sake of completing my Prince collection was probably the most surreal moment of my 27 years being a Prince fan. I have it if anyone wants a copy - Finally, there were also fuck-ups with Erotic City and Another Lonely Christmas on the 2007 Rhino CD reissues of the 12'', and those versions ended up on iTunes as well. Reminds me of the 67 empty tracks on 20Ten, I feel robbed that my Itunes skips them and goes straight from Track 9 Everybody Loves me to Track 77 Laydown. I just feel robbed. . Forget deluxe reissues of classic albums and lost gems in the vault, it is Prince's silence that is most interesting to us and the hardest to find Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I don't think I ever knew Laydown was after tracks of silence. He used that trick on TRC and NPS as well IIRC, any other album that I have forgotten? I've always considered hidden tracks as being part of albums as opposed to bonus tracks, however it raises questions as to what the listening experience was supposed to be: obviously I used to skip them on CD and I don't have the empty tracks on my mp3 rips either, but on the other hand were we really supposed to go thu minutes and minutes of silence before hearing Wasted Kisses? The way I saw it back then (especially if it was not listed) was it was a surprise if you forgot the CD was still playing and it suddenly came on after your attention had moved on.

At the end of the day, this is another dig at 4ever. . So far this album has been exposed as cheap, haphazard, poorly arranged, ML is almost certainly a bootleg mix and to make it worst, they are fading out editted versions of songs to fit on the disc. . Sounds like the "40 Golden Hits of Prince" by some company like Ktel or Startel, except Warners did it and rather than rant at you guys - I agree. . Seriously looking at it today, it has a cheep ass cardboard pack (After the 2014/2015 albums were back in cases again), some out take photos from the 1993 Hits sessions by Herb Rits and basically 39 heard to death single edits and one edit of a legendary song sourced off a bootleg. I mean really, I think Warners is taking the Mickey out of us fans and Prince, by issuing this rubbish, if Prince was alive, do you think he would approve of it? (And of course obviously without ML if he was alive). . This is nothing more than a ruthless korporate kash in on a dead celebrity, which is why I do not hold any especial hopes for Purple Rain deluxe, it would probably be a reissue of the album and a special anniversary edition of Purple Rain the movie, like last time, along with some exclusive $19.95 each Chinese made re pressings of the 7 inch singles. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I don't know why people kick up a fuss over shit like this. UNLESS you're 15 years old and just started listening to P..... everyone else should know what to expect from these Greatest Hits releases. Radio edits have been around since the 60's. So it's nothing new. And it's obvious that the record company has crammed in as much as possible into the CDs. But that's to cater for the mainstream who don't have these songs and probably don't even know the difference. I'll buy this when it hits the Specials Bin as that's all it's worth to me. Never would I critisise it though. It is what it is. You should feel sorry for fans of the band KISS! Their last 10 releases have been Greatest Hits (with a touch of something new).

Think of it this way - Prince often cut songs short in concert. In his concerts around 2000/2001, a lot of the show was like that. And in a much more creative way, on the Lovesexy tour.

I do feel sorry for them, as they must all be tone deaf. Kiss are the most overrated group in history, a group of aging Jewish maths teachers, yeah really bad and rock and roll. . Their music sucks and their sound has not left the 70s, the only good song they did was their disco sellout "I was made for Loving you". Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I hear that! I'm still looking for the cassette edit of JIR
First I've heard about there being different versions of Rave though... Will need to check what version I have when I get back home. Do they have the same catalogue number? Any other distinguishable features?
