WHY is Prince regularly ridiculed?

Just watched Silent Bob ...recently.
Why do they playfully say Jungle Love is written by a "female" God?

Even his supporters seem to always
have a SUBTLE REFERENCE to him in a gay
way.

Unless Prince himself is so secure
he likes to play with the rumour.

Prince never feels the need to explain himself or respond to dumb comments. He is actually fairly modest about his genius. Unlike, Michael Jackson who spreads the whole 'King of pop' thing.
Actually, I think comments like that in the film, are a form of flattery. The same with the mention in the Eminem song. Anything to get his name on people's lips again!

come on, be honest, most of the time he's asking for it.

Prince is a personality that has captivated many people. Many of the people saying these things are major Prince fans who also have a major sense of humor.

Off the top of my head:

  • He dresses like a sissy.
  • He changed his name a symbol and pretentiously expected everyone to use it.
  • In interviews he often comes across as being somewhat aloof, living in his own little fantasy world.
  • He's made some very peculiar business decisions (e.g. The G. Bridge movie).
  • He has probably pissed off loads of industry people over the years.
  • He's a bit eccentric, and people think he's a bit mad.

Prince is from a different era, when pop star quirkiness was all the rage. Nowadays people have no respect for the wacky pop star ego stuff. At least he still has his musical credibility unlike people like MJ.

People who say bad things about others in public ultimately only make themselves look bad. I don't even know who CJ is, but from reading the quotes posted here sometimes she's sounds like a complete bitch.

"WHY is Prince regularly ridiculed?"

Prince is regularly ridiculed because he regularly does (in my opinion) boneheaded things which give people an opportunity to ridicule him!

Ian made some good points "off the top of his head", mainly the name change.

On 1 hand, Prince can be "admired" for basically saying "I'm going to do what I want to do, & I don't really care what anybody thinks about that".

On the other hand, there is a considerable amount of.. arrogance (?) on Prince's part, for him to do things that a "reasonable, normal" person would find strange, & then for Prince to be surprised that many people react the way that they do.

Likely though (again)-
Prince really doesn't care what people think about what he does. I have the impression that Prince would rather do what he wants (& let people react however) than hold back or whatever.

If Prince were that concerned with how "the general public" saw him, his career would have been
SO
DIFFERENT.

Cuz some people are ignorant and got no taste... wink

Seriously, Prince has provided some pretty good material for people to goof on him about.

The cool part is, I don't think he really cares if people do goof on him - especially in cases where it's actually coming from a place of respect and admiration (and it often DOES. like Tom said above, sometimes the people who are poking fun at him are huge fans who just don't take themselves or anything else in life too seriously, and they consider what they're saying/doing a warped kind of tribute to or sign of respect for P.) of course, then you have the actually seriously meanspirited and nasty folks like C.J. who don't know when to draw the line and think they're so funny when all they really do is come across as pathetic a**holes. I have no explanation for them other than they must be nasty people down to their soul and they get off on being jerks and mean to others who have actually achieved something in this life, so as to just garner attention for themselves.

I forgot about that line! lol. But I think between that and the "skinny MF witha high voice" remark, its shows Prince is well aware of what people think of his persona. Numerous times in his career he's made it a point to challenge the status quo then defy it.

Sometimes he really has an agenda, other times he's just plain goofy.

Like Ian said the disrespect stems from the image/mystique Prince has created. Luckily the music doesn't attract the disdain yet it plays a second fiddle for many sadly...

THE DIRECT QUESTION was--why when he is ridiculed that OFTEN it has gay undertones --especially by his so-called
peers and industry admirers?

Anybody in the public arena is subject to it. From politics to sports to religion to entertainment. Prince doesn't have a corner of the market on it. Let's not make a martyr out of him. lol
