'Way Back Home' The question has probably been raised before (nothing came up in the search here) but I wondered if anyone else thinks that the beat in this song sounds like a womb/heartbeat sound... Life Matters

I think this was brought up before. I think the general concensus was that it's the same sample from Sex In The Summer from Emancipation of his baby's heartbeat whilst Mayte was pregnant. But others of course disagree. . In my opinion and in hindsight this whole song is about Prince's death and eventually coming "home" and being with his son again, 20 years after he last saw him. . This also links in with Tyka's comments when she said that Prince told her a couple of years ago before his death that his work was done and he's now prepared to go.

Thanks Spayne, it all makes perfect sense... No matter how sad. Life Matters

It's not the sound of a fetal heartbeat. It is a percussive sound (feet stomping or drum sounds pounding) filtered through a wah-wah plug-in or pedal or something to give the same effect. Now, that's not to say that was the intention, but I doubt very highly that either Josh (or Prince) would have sampled Prince's deceased son's heartbeat. I DO, however, agree with the song being a reference to his passing. I believe he knew it was only a matter of time, which is why he said what he said to Tyka.

This song seem to be about his son, reincarnated in him, or something like that. Prince = Gregory

[Edited 1/16/17 3:35am] If he said to Tyka that his work was finished, then why would Prince say to someone that he was trying to save the world. Why would he have so much unfinished work lined up. As far as the hearbeat, yes I believe that was his son [Edited 1/18/17 15:14pm] I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

This song and the music is extremely deep to me. When Prince proclaims that he was born alive, I get shivers up and down my spine. That is a very deep statement. The sound of the drum/heart beat, could be expressed as what one might hear during deep meditative states. As one's meditation deepens, there are sounds associated with these greater depths. Prior to complete silence, btw, there is what is typically described as the sound of thunder. ("Thunder, all through the night, promise to see Jesus in the morning Light").

I don't know if baby Ahmir's heartbeat is in "Way Back Home," but the if it is not the heartbeat, then the percussion sounds very similar to the heartbeat. If the sound in "Way Back Home" is not the heartbeat, then I wonder if it was Prince's intention for the percussion to sound like the heartbeat. The heartbeat in "Sex in the Summer" and the heartbeat-like percussion sound in "Way Back Home" is not a common feature in Prince's work with which I am familiar.
