Prince's first manager Owen Husney has invariably appeared in Prince documentaries over the years but there seemed to be some resentment on Prince's part towards him. I've read that Prince got angry about something petty like Owen not fetching a space heater for him but what really went down? Even years later in the 90s Prince dissed him when he said he couldn't remember his first manager (Larry King interview?). Owen comes across as a guy who genuinely believed in Prince and sacrificed a lot for him to get him signed to WB so why the bitterness from Prince? Did he feel angry after the disastrous Capri Theatre gig when the Warners execs didn't think he was ready to tour, which made him question his future and his management? Kind of reminds me of Rocky V when the young boxer ditches Rocky for a more glamorous Don King type manager. Anyway, all rambling aside, what was Prince's real beef with someone who was a key part of his early success?

most likely for the same reason most people, especially the early folks, didn't stay with Prince, he outgrew people really fast. He was a guy who believed in the impossible, which is what that kind of stardom basically is, and he got frustrated with everyone who couldn't keep up with him. I have several books, I'm not sure it details the precise reason in them or not. I believe they bought Husney out though in the end. Believe me, i understand prince's frustration, it's very difficult to get other people to do their work, even with leverage and power. Prince mentioned something in the RS interview about the people around him, I think he was just speaking of his band and the other various musicians, just couldn't see how much they could accomplish if they all worked together. I think that may have something to do with why he was such an asshole in the early days, because that is what people need sometimes. Prince was "too demanding" to quote Doves cry, and he ordered his new manager to get him a feature film or he would fire him. Do you know how crazy and ridiculous that it? but Prince had the vision and he made it happen. Eventually he fired the new managers too. I think that had to be really alienating for him and maybe why he went through some real issues in the mid nineties. I think he fired alan leeds too, I don't think it was acrimonious or anything though.
Also, credit must be given to Chris Moon who first saw promise in this inner city black kid and actually gave him keys to a studio and helped to launch his career. Prince outgrew him and discarded him rather harshly too. Story goes, around the time of Purple Rain that Moon sent word that he was outside a store or something when Prince was inside, Prince ran out and said "where? where is he?" Moon says he was well concealed and Prince didn't see him.

also, husney took over andre cymone's career which never really quite took off after he left Prince.

Pepe Willie said that he went to talk to Owen on Prince's behalf and Owen told Pepe Willie that "He was not going to let his ad agency go to wayside for some RnB singer. Pepe went back and told Prince and Owen was fired the next day.

oh ok, thanks again laura, did he really word it like that? that's fucked up, he may as well have said "i'm not letting no chitlin circuit artist drag my business down". Owen really put time and money into prince, so did moon, but as i said, Prince had vision that no one else did, he was right, history proves that. The only mistake I saw him making, and it was well after the superstardom, was the same mistake almost every superstar makes, they end up isolated in their own world and it fucks with their heads. I do not believe prince never needed to hear the word "no" or that he was wrong. We all need that sometimes.
Jesse Johnson had a pretty good debut album, at least in on the black charts he did ok and the music was great, if one wants to hear great minneapolis sound, they don't even need to listen to Prince, there were plenty of people who had a hand in the sound and also who were influenced and wanted to be Prince. That was Jesse's thing, Andre too, or so I thought. Truth was, what I saw in interviews as Prince mannerisms was actually really the way he talked, probably them being buddies, they picked up each others traits. He did try to one up Prince with the fem shit though, he wore a dress to some show. I don't think Prince ever went so far as to actually wear a dress, he came awful close though.

i messaged him before, never got a response. Now, Chris Moon, that's a guy who i haven't heard a peep from since, well, long before Prince's death, since the 80's actually.

According to Pepe he was very harsh when he said it. Jesse and Andre both had problems with him later. Oh I remember crazy Andre on Solid Gold wearing a wedding dress. I wish I could find footage of it. If I look around I might be able to find the interview Pepe has a big mouth and has made a living talking about Prince.

wonder what the issue was with husney for them? I did hear that Jesse wasn't paying his bandmembers. I asked Mark Cardenas in an email if it was true, he didn't seem interested in answering it. But he did say that a lot of people tried to be like Prince in that they were overbearing.

Oh no. | |

Speaking of Andre and Jesse, both were good looking guys and talented musicians, but the one thing I remember is they lacked the beautiful doe eyes and the facial expressions which helped Prince create a mystique that ultimately made him famous.

ya, both super talented. some people on here, blackguitarist I think, said that it was Prince who got the idea for a color from Jesse and the hair and other stuff. Jesse was blamed by many fans, me included, who didn't know that Prince used a lot of his ideas. Jesse says he got prince into the mamas and the papas and marvin gaye, sounds like they were pretty tight at one time. Andre never had even as much success as Jesse, I never listened to his albums. I don't think anyone had the Prince work ethic though and the ambition. Husney did say he wondered how things would have went if he' signed andre first instead of Prince and also, the music teacher who taught both says that andre was the one who appeared to be more talented in the early years.

I think Andre is very talented but I do not think he had P's drive. He even said he wanted to take a year off when his daughter was born in 81. Did Prince ever take anytime off? He was married to his carreer and I got the impression from interviews Andre has done that he did not feel the same about his carreer.

i never listened to much of his music, i loved his jody watley work which is some of the best prince imitations ever, but other than that, i don't know if his other music is any good. the prince cover he did was good of course, dance electric, but that wasn't his. Everyone and their moma tried to take credit for prince's success but he was the reason he was great. One great thing about andre though, he sounds exactly like Prince, just like him, today. I'd love to see the revolution tour with him.

Maybe this will help answer the OP? P's first manager wasn't Owen Husney, it was Levinson -- when P was only 16 or 17. [Edited 1/1/17 19:22pm] Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

No one has seen this from Owen's side. Owen quit a lucrative company to throw his weight behind Prince, he gave him money, instruments anddid all he could to promote him. Levinson was Husney's partner and also helped. Husney got Prince his first contract and shopped him to the companies and also negotiated in getting Prince production rights. . Seems to me, Prince got petulant and ungrateful by demanding his career move faster and have Husney do all the dog's work for him. I love Prince, but credit where credit is due. Husney believed in Prince all the way and went out on a limb for him and still Prince wanted more. Prince shafted him, don't get the shit twisted. . Also Lavonne Daugherty (Morris Day's Momma) was the first manager, as she was managing Soul Explosion/Shampagne/Grand Central or whatever they were calling themselves in 1975/76. She got them into the studio in Minneapolis and Moonsound originally and apparently Prince had to leave his instruments when he went with Moon, and hence why Husney had to buy him some more. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I don't defend Prince when he's wrong but I don't really know if he's technically wrong here. I'm a musician, I was also a fighter when i was young, the biggest problems in both areas by far, in terms of having to deal with and rely with others was their laziness. Even people that had "credentials". My take on it was Husney couldn't keep up with Prince's growth so he should have been kicked to the curb. Sometimes that's the right thing, I've had "coaches" who wouldn't do a goddamned thing for me but they wanted a lot of time, control and allegiance back, they didn't deserve it. Sometimes people take you so far and they need to let go, i've lost close friends/mentors when they didn't know how or when to stop trying to control me. The proof is in the pudding, Prince went on to become the superstar that he wanted to and Husney was left with Prince wannabes who he couldn't take half as far. I'm not a guy who can't see fault with Prince but i also know how lazy and unproffesional 95 percent of the population is. Hell, most people can't even function without going home at the end of the day and drinking or drugging themselves into a stupor. as far as morris' momma, I remember hearing that she had managed them for awhile and that she was a real stage mom, Prince once said something about her around the PR era and Pepe Willie wouldn't tell him till the next day because morris "would have been over him."

Andre was wearing a wedding dress on Solid Gold. I remembe seeing this and I have looked on YOUTUBE for years to see if it will pop up. I do not know what he was thinking other than the fact that he was not happy about Dance Electric and maybe he was trying to sabotage the project.
Even Owen said that Andre mouthed off to the record lable all thet time but did not have the music to deliver. I believe all of these guys liked pushing buttons and after Andre said his brother Eddie was a pimp and that Prince got an education in his house I can only imagine that they both had some deep anti-authorian ideas in their heads.

a wedding dress? sabotage you say? that would do it. donnie simpson was talking about a seperate thing I think. I wonder why Andre wasn't happy about dance electric, that's probably his biggest chance for a hit just off the prince connection. The song wasn't bad either.

Maybe he was pissed because Prince wrote and it was really his only hit under his own name. Remember everyone said when they were kids that Andre was more talented, better looking, and chrismatic.
It must have been upsetting to see Prince take off they way that he did and then to have to come back with hat in hand to get a song.
I also wonder where Andre was for so many years it is a mystery because it you look they last prodcutions he had were on the Days of Thunder soundtrack back in 91. Did he leave music by choice or did something happen he is very evasive when asked and I remember an interview with Jody Whatley about 7 or 8 years ago when she was asked about his whereabouts and she said she had no idea where he was. Remember they have a son and she did not know anything about his whereabouts.

ya, i remember a thread on here with someone saying he was a manager at taco bell. then one of his relatives said it wasn't true. The donnie simpson interviews don't tell a whole lot, andre was a good looking guy, talented but he didn't have stage presence from what I saw. There has been issue of his contributing a lot to Prince, which to be fair, was acknowledged with a gold album for Controversy. It's a classic problem though, you know competition, and rock and roll is no exception, everyone of the founding fathers of rock were either loving or hating Elvis but they all were chasing his success. Jerry Lee, depending on what day you catch him, seldom has a good word to say about Elvis. Chuck Berry and Little Richard do have a case that they would have been in that position if they weren't black, Buddy Holly and several others died in accidents trying to topple the king. Prince, likewise, engendered lots of imitation, envy and hate for being a winner. Kinda comes with the territory.

He said P let everyone know that he had written "Dance Electric" for him and it was not a classy thing for P to do - said it was "tawdry". He also said he did a lot of the work on "Controversy" and P got all the credit. That and plus his baby caused him to leave.
