I wonder if people would've thought differently about Bruno's performance if he wasn't dressed in a Prince costume. It did kind of give it the feel of a Vegas style impersonation. Paisley Park is in your heart

The whole thing was a nostalgia act. A good one, but a novelty act nonetheless. It is advertedly offensive to prince because it just made him seem like a has-been more than a genuis who happened to have a peak in the 80's.
Bruno is very talented so I don't blame him. He did his best and was very solid. But obviously he is no Prince. Are these awards show unable to use good Prince clips? Does his estate charge too much or something? Even George MIcheal's tribute had footage.

Prince endured relentless criticism of his music, career, personal life. If Bruno Mars is going to literally dress, look like and embody the music of Prince, why shouldn't he get the same criticism if it's warranted? I didn't care for the tribute because it made Prince seem like his legacy can be summed up in one pop song. Also, Bruno dressing like Prince in the "Purple Rain" costume was very campy and Vegasy. Just liken with Lady Gaga's tribute to Bowie at the Grammys, it wasn't enough to just perform the music, Bruno had to be self-indulgent to a tee. Sting's homage to Prince in his song "50,000" was better and a lot less kitsch. Very original and moving considering Sting was Pirnce's musical contemporary as a singer, songwriter and composer. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

lrn36 said: I saw a pic of Bruno. Did this this muthf--cka really dress up like Purple Rain era Prince and played a knockoff cloud guitar? Seriously?! If P was alive, he would've cringed and gave him that same side eye he gave to Trey Songz for butchering Purple Rain. Do these new artists have any artistic integrity? Do you think Prince would've wore a James Brown wig in a tribute? Hell no. When Prince wrote that letter to Bruno and said be your own hero, he meant do your own thing and blaze a new trail. Obviously, Bruno didn't listen. We really need a thumbs up button here. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

That's not the Prince cloud guitar, thank god!! If you notice on the headstock it says Schecter.

"It is advertedly offensive to prince because it just made him seem like a has-been more than a genuis who happened to have a peak in the 80's.". Exactly. Prince's musical evolution was reminicent of Miles Davis: Prince changed musicians every few years, experimented with different musical technologies, pioneered the use of synthesizers and drum machines to create a sound both accessible to the mainstream and appealing to followers of sub-genres. Even when his albums stopped going Gold and Platinum, he never stopped being creative and chasing his artistic muse. That is a legacy that future generations could benefit from learning. Also, the song choice was so obvious. If Bruno wanted to sing a hit, he could have sung "Sign O' The Times"-what's a more fitting song in this times? 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I do agree with this; it's almost impossible to do Prince justice. But at least he did a rock song and we didn't get another sappy version of Purple Rain or Nothing Compares 2 U. That's exactly it. I feel bad because I like Bruno, and think he's genuine, but dressing up just like Prince was a step too far and made me uneasy. There's no replacement for Prince.

I just rewatched the Prince superbowl performance because Prince is the best tribute to his work. Damn, what have we lost? Prince was very much a flawed, complicate human being in life, but he was a god in music.

Saw this on Housequake...
http://www.startribune.co.../413551993 Grammys go crazy for Prince: Tribute with Bruno Mars and the Time took months of planning Sunday night's tribute with Bruno Mars & the Time took months of planning. By Jon Bream Star Tribune FEBRUARY 12, 2017 — 11:39PM LOS ANGELES – Bruno Mars couldn’t decide which song to perform for Sunday’s Grammy Awards tribute to Prince. “He agonized over this for two weeks,” Grammy Awards executive producer Ken Ehrlich told the Star Tribune. “’When Doves Cry,’ ’1999,’ ‘I Would Die 4 U,’ ‘Kiss’ – I said some of those songs shouldn’t be done by anyone but Prince,” Ehrlich continued. Mars settled on “Let’s Go Crazy” from “Purple Rain.” But the tribute wasn’t limited to Mars going crazy with his band; it started with the Time, the hit-making Minneapolis band Prince put together around singer Morris Day in 1981, doing an abbreviated medley of two of their hits. Grammys host James Corden set the table by describing First Avenue in 1985 under a purple sky. The Time whipped through “Jungle Love” and “The Bird” with Grammy-goers dancing the same steps Day was doing onstage. Then Prince’s voice was heard talking the intro to “Let’s Go Crazy” while his symbol was featured on the screen. Mars, resplendent in a purple sequined jacket and ruffled shirt, commanded the stage on vocals and guitar. “Bruno ripped it up,” Day said backstage afterward. “I don’t think there’s another artist who could pull it off as perfectly with us.” Interjected Time keyboardist Jimmy Jam: “We still kicked his ass.” [...] Click the link for the rest of the article... http://www.startribune.co.../413551993 Edit: They deleted the article , so here's the cached version... http://webcache.googleuse...413551993/ . I'm so glad for the BET awards, really. I mean, why dress up as Prince to do a tribute? It's not a tribute band, folks, it's an homage. The coat and ruffled shirt makes it looks silly. Why does everyone always do the same mistake? No need to dress up as Prince, for crying out loud!

Thank God these tribute covers are over. Bruno was horrible. The vocals were off. The guitar playing was poor. The overall feel was so uninspiring. Although the Adele George Michael tribute had problems, at least it was art. Bruno reduced Prince to a Vegas novelty act. The Google commercial was so much more heartfelt...which is sad.

Because they want to drain the soul of his music. If people actually like this than that speaks volumes about America's taste. His remake with Rosie blows these crap versions out of the water and they could have used that version.

Yes Jesse was there! They showed him during the performance with the wide brimmed hat and trench coat. He mainy kept his head down but when Morris hugged Bruno, Jesse was behind Morris. Jesse also was posting pics intermittently on his facebook page hours before the show started including a pic of his 12 yr old daugther who was there as well. Seems Bruno stole her heart (Jesse posted of pic of her and Bruno before the show started).

Excactly! Prince would've been MORTIFIED! And everyone knows it....and having the Time before that? I'm thinking we would've heard P say "Aw, HELL NAW!"....as he strutted out furiously with his pimp gait. [Edited 2/13/17 8:49am]
