Now see, since you mentioned this possible line of thinking...First let me qualify these next comments...I'm a P fan from Soft & Wet, ok?...Everyone in my real life world has heard way more about P than they ever cared to and I routinely find a way to put him into whatever's being discussed. Drives everyone crazy and IDGAFF.
For further context, I also grew up watching the Jackson 5 as a kid, back when MJ was...a cute lil boy from Gary, Indiana singing with his brothers and juuuuust about to make it really big.
OK, so here's my hypothesis...I suspect P also saw J5 on TV since he's only 3 years older than me...And as he persued music in Minnesota, even though P would try the "young cute pop singer" thing very early cuz he was young and folks saw MJ and assumed P was the same, I think P got to LA all wide eyed and probably nervous...and I'm gonna guess that being thrown into situations where he & MJ would cross paths seems very likely to me.
Here's where things take a turn, though cuz by 1972, MJ's first 2 solo albums had been succussful, then the next 2 sold not so great. By 1978, MJ was recording Off The Wall and P had had a decent debut with For You, WB was on board and he was making Prince. So 2 young guys in LA making records...MJ has had success in J5 and moderate success as a solo, P has had early success with his debut and is working on album #2....And for some reason MJ feels as if he's somehow grander cuz his daddy whoped his azz into his current level of success and whines "I've been singing since I was little. It's not fair."
Ok, they're the same age, right?
P's mother said P started playing instruments as young as 3 and P says his father started teaching him piano around 5 or 6 and he wrote his first song by 7.
Ok, I'm seeing them as pretty even...By 1978 MJ does something interesting, he plays the Scarecrow in The Wiz, which bombs at the boxoffice. Soon afterwards, P's #2 album drops and the TV appearances start and of course we know how it all ends...
But in those early days they were both climbing and to make it worse, MJ had already done this climb before with J5, but was having a rocky start as a solo act at the same time P was climbing in LA. But let's not forget that although MJ had early success with J5, P was also having a much more modest success in HIS OWN BANDS in Minnesota.
Anyway, I say all that to say that MJ would've met/been around/heard of P as "a new young guy who DOES IT ALL!" just as MJ was trying to come to grips with a few career failures on his way to solo success with 1979's Off The Wall.
And then here comes P in bikini underwear, leggings, sexy doe eyes and Dirty Mind in 1980, then Controversy 1981 plus 2 tours that got his name out there and shook things up. MJ might've felt like WTF???
Don't forget, while all this is going on, MJ hasn't made another album yet and P's made 2 more, 4 total. Also, MJ is still a devout JW and P is a devout nonJW. I can just imagine MJ avoiding P as a "worldly sinner"...Lol We finally reach 1982 and MJ's success with Thriller, and the video that got him trouble with the JW organization...and P's success with 1999 the album and successful tour.
MJ's having considerable stress too in his personal life...and that Prince doesn't GTFA and he's making Gold and Platimnum records, argh. Also, note that while MJ enjoys a "hide & seek me, please notice me" relationship with fans and media, P is all mysterious and elusive to the point of "GO AWAY AND LET ME MAKE MY ART!" But the best is yet to come...
MJ doesn't release Bad until 1987, during which time P released Purple Rain and wins an Oscar in 1984, ATWIAD 1985, makes UTCM and the accompanying album Parade 1986, tours, also makes Housequake and Camille and other side projects, having absolutely stunning girlfriends in between (where does P find the time?)
By March 1987 P releases Sign O The Times. September 1987 MJ releases Bad...
Between the scatter of MJ trying to deal with personal crap and hanging out with Liz Taylor, when would he have had the time/opportunity to be friends with P?
Likewise, when would P have had time to be friends with MJ?
The only time period that this seems possible is between 1977 and 1978/79, but considering P being new to the game and his work ethic, and MJ worrying about the recent career flops he'd just had and now this new guy who could be a gamechanger...Nope, I don't see it happening...After 1987 it was clear there was tension between them so...

There's a silly but often made comparison of Neverland with Paisley Park. They were not similar in any way, and were built for completely different reasons. Prince ate, breathed, and drank music, and Paisley was built to accommodate his 24/7 creative flow. This is not news to anybody reading this. Neverland was MJ's way of recreating the childhood that was stolen from him. For used music to support his life, but Prince used life to support his music. I don't know all the ins and outs of what was inside Neverland. Maybe there was a studio or two in there, but if there was, it was to allow MJ to attain complete reclusivity. PP on the other hand was to allow Prince to record and create at any time day or night.

THE COMPLETE PRINCE VS MICHAEL JACKSON RIVALRY Ok, lets check out the timeline 1983 - The James Brown Incident Michael and Prince were there just to watch James Brown(He was a huge influence to them), but He noticed Michael and called him on stage. Michael improvises does a dance move or 2, then ask James Brown to call up Prince(who was on the verge of stardom ala 1999) LOL Moment: as prince goes to the stage he takes of his glove and throws it into the crowd and .02 seconds somone chucks it right back at him Prince goes on stage tries to play guitar but it wasnt working with him, so he takes of his jacket, the crowd goes wild and then his does this weird "Darling Nikki" esque scream & proceeds to ackward dance moves until he leaves the stage LOL Moment: as prince leaves the stage he hold on to a plastic lampost which he probably thought was nailed firm onto the ground...yea umm no, he falls off of the stage with the lampost Questionable bit: There's an interview on youtube where Quincy Jones says as he Prince walked on the stage he tried to challenge Michael, After the show Prince waited outside in a Limosuine and tried to run over Michael & Latoya(whom Prince had a crush on) Now the incident was so bad James Brown decided to edit Prince out of the televised version and left Michael in My Thoughts: If there rivalry started anywhere this is it. Michael's sister used to listen to Prince and they loved him (to the point where Rebbie Jackson covered Private Joy) & like i stated above Prince was becoming a household name. I feel however Michael made a rookie mistake by overestimated Prince improvisation skills at the time and well this happened. 1985 - The Table Tennis Game Two years after the "James Brown incident" the 2 reunited at Samuel Goldwyn Studio out in west hollywood. Prince was finishing up Under The Cherry Moon and here come Michael with his bodyguard(s). They talk alittle and Prince challenges Michael to a game of Ping Pong. Michael (who knows he never played Ping Pong a day in his life) accepts the challenge and is easily beaten by Prince over and over again. LOL Moment: Michael was getting beat so bad that Prince got bored and started hitting the ball towards Michael and wasnt actively trying to win. Michael even put down the paddle and started covering his face!!! While they're playing people stop what their doing to watch & in come Prince's then-girlfriend Sherilyn Fenn. Michael sees her and starts flirting the whole time at this point he doesnt even care about the game. Prince (being the prideful man he is) decided not to intervine and after Michael leaves he dumps her. LOL Moment: Later on that day, Prince says Michael played like Helen Keller 1986 - Prince's meeting with Quincy Jones & Camille....Oops I Mean Michael Jackson Sometime around the summer of 1986, Quincy Jones set up a meeting between Michael and Prince. They sit down and and Quincy brings up a collaboration. They play a demo of Bad (which went by the name Pee) and right on the first lyric, "Your Butt is Mine" Prince said "who's saying that to who? cause i'm not singing that to you and YOU SURE AIN'T SINGING THAT TO ME" Prince then went home and re-recorded his unreleased song "Wouldn't You Love Me?" and submitted it into Quincy Jones. Michael ultimately declined claiming it didnt fit the theme of the album. Prince then told MJ and his camp that Bad would be a big hit without him. LOL & Questionable Moment: In the same Quincy Jones interview(mentioned above),Quincy Jones says Prince called Michael Camille My Thoughts: I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE that they couldnt find common ground and collaborate on the song, i guess its one of the "best thing that never was." 1992 - My Name Is Prince Around 1992 people had begun to call MJ "The King Of Pop", so on October 13 1992 Prince released "The Love Symbol" album and on the first song "My Name Is Prince" Prince says: "My name is Prince, I don't wanna be king Cuz I've seen the top and it's just a dream Big cars and women and fancy clothes Will save your face but it won't save your soul" My Thoughts: He says he doesnt want the title King because he's been at the peak of stardom and its not what its made out to be. You appear to enjoy life but mentally and spiritually your in hell. Also the "save your face" line may be a shot at Michael's plastic surgery...but i may be reaching Tony M. also threw a little something in there with this line: "So with a flow and a spray, I say hey You must become a prince before you're king anyway" My Thoughts: Tony means if anyone is gonna be a king they would have to be a Prince. Putting Prince before MJ musically. 2001 - Michael Strikes Back At this point there should have been no more mention of a rivalry between Michael & Prince but on October 30 MJ releases his final studio album Invincible and he says something on there that a lot of people didn't pick up on, He says: "If there's somebody else, he can't love you like me And he says he'll treat you well, he can't treat you like me And he's buying diamonds and pearls, he can't do it like me And he's taking you all across the world, he can't trick you like me" My Thoughts: Assuming he's speaking to a mutual love interest, he means there is no one who can treat you treat or love her like he can. Now here is where you know he's talking about Prince, he says he's buying "Diamonds and Pearls", as all of you may or may not know In 1992 Prince released his Smash hit album "Diamonds And Pearls", so ask yourself why would Michael put that in his song knowing that it could be misconstrued and seen as an attack towards Prince? That's the whole point he wanted Prince to know he was fed up and "this is my response" the"taking you all across the world" line only confirms this Prince went on world tours constantly and was well known for being a romantic, who just so happened to make an album called "Diamonds and Pearls" i'm not gonna lie this was brilliant. 2003 - Life O' The Party Prince makes a huge comeback, with his 2003 album "Musicology" and on the 4th track: Life O' The Party Prince says this: "My voice is getting higher And I ain 't never had my nose done That's the other guy" My Thoughts: Prince pokes fun at Michaels nose job and at the same time tries to distance himself from Michael. Also it was rumored that Michael had an additional nose job to help him hit higher notes. LOL Moment: Michael, Will.I.Am & Chris Tucker went to see Prince during the Musicology Tour. Prince walked over to the section where they were and began to play bass in Michael's face. After Prince goes to the stage Michaels says: "What's up with prince playing the bass in my face?" FINAL THOUGHTS: Both artist were amazing artist that left their mark on both Music & The World, I truely believe there was no malice between the 2 and it was just a friendly rivalry. They loved each others music and inspired each other to do better and in the process inspired future generations. The world will never forget the 2 Icons and we will live through their music. RIP Prince & MJ, we wish u both heaven. Pop life

Michael sanged acapella and improvised danced like a true show man and owned the stage. Prince was invited on stage and acted a complete fool by jumping unto a prop into the audience. Just accept this was not one of Princes good moments on stage and let it go.

if it were a rap battle, Michael won easily....Prince looked almost buffoonish...and super-high ...

Don't forget that Prince got more sweet revenge when they swept the 1985 AMA's, beating MJ. Lionel Richie throwing shade and admonishing Quincy to " stay in his seat ". Why were they all so surprised ? Bayyyuumm

It may not have been one of prince's nights. But giving him a left handed guitar was kind of chicken shit.
That being said, I hope you are not implying that Prince could not improvise. He rehearsed a lot (just like MJ did) but still improvised within that framework on many occasions. A recent one I saw was in 2011 when Prince was going to sing "Anotherloverholenthehead" and his mike stopped working right in the middle of him singing..so improvized a 2 minute guitar solo instead and it was bad ass.

Is it equally "ok" not to like both of them? Specifically just to like one of them?
Just curious.

It seems like Prince fans are expected to like MJ. I'm not sure why. Are MJ fans expected to like Prince? Paisley Park is in your heart

Thank you! I thought I was the only one noticing this trend!
It's like MJ fans feel guilty for liking P and always feel the need to qualify that with "P is a geniusblahblahblah, but MJ (fill in whatever reason they'll gleefully supply to 'prove' MJ was better somehow)" :eyeroll:
Whenever I see the comparison conversations start, in all these years, I've never seen a P fan start them. It's always either an MJ fan or a hybrid MJ fan who also likes P.
And it's always a backhanded compliment compliment to P followed by fawning over MJ...Honestly, it used to piss me off...Now it only bothers me when it happens on supposed P fan sites. Lol
