You may very well be right, but...
It's quite annoying seeing P always be portrayed as the bad guy and MJ always portrayed as the victim.
BTW, I remember awhile ago MJ's oldest son was asking for a DNA test before they buried the doctor that he looks exactly like and feels is his biological father...did that ever come to fruition?

They both always avoided it and I think they knew the press was trying to pit them against each other. You know something's up when neither of them spoke about the other but magazines were constantly talking about them. "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I've always gotten the impression that the articles presented Prince as the cool one and Michael being insecure and putting him in a negative light, especially when the story was reported. Bland: He was really into the Pretenders at some point. He talked about how much he liked Chrissie Hynde and the songwriting. He played me some of the first Sly Stone records I ever heard. That was an education I couldn't have received anywhere else. We held meetings, and we would watch random videos people would send. Michael Jackson loved sending Prince old footage of Sly. Prince would just stop everything and bring everybody to his office. One time we watched the Jackson 5 Goin' Back to Indiana special. the fan throwing the glove back at Prince when he first got on stage, and James (not so politely) handing Prince his jacket back was some funny shit...James was looking at P the whole time, like, "WTF is wrowng wit dis bwoy"...and him bringing down that dollar store lamp post was icing on the cake...funniest shit i ever saw from Prince...it just wasnt his night...and im sure homie had more than just some wine.....wine dont do that shit...

Hmmm...That's an interesting take on things cuz over the years I've noticed that even when the articles painted P as "cool", it was with the spin that he was somehow responsible for MJ being insecure...like it was inherently P's fault that MJ often came off as weak and a victim and that it was somehow P's responsibility to...I duno...be less P(?) to make MJ feel better?
It's crazy.
They call it self esteem for a reason...It's your own responsibility to have self esteem and not come off as weak.
But I always felt that MJ took himself a bit too seriously and resented P's not "kneeling before the dias" and looking for MJ to "give him his blessing". (Yup, watched The Godfather Part 2 today".
I've seen P's onstage debacle with MJ and JB. I don't watch it...I don't find it funny at all...too cringeworthy for me.

I'm sure you feel that relevant somehow in proving that MJ was just a sweet lighthearted selfdeprecating fellow, but I think while that may be true in other instances, MJ resented P as an unworthy upstart who came on the scene to upstage him.
And although he already had a lifelong lucrative career and respect, he had grown too comfortable and there was no one nearby to give him any run for his money...
Now here comes P, all wild sexy arrogant complicated AND a genius virtuoso to boot...nah.
MJ was shook with the realization that there was a contender in his midst and the real potential of a coup d' gras coming...What MJ resented first was P's prescence then ultimately the fact that P was no flash in the pan one hit wonder.
It became clearer to MJ soon enough that not only wasn't P going away but he also wasn't the type to accept a subordinate role with MJ...But P didn't need to because he was the real deal and capable of shoving MJ off his self agrandized despotic throne...if he wanted to...but P was too busy building his own brand new purple kingdom to think about swiping a used kingdom from MJ.

And that's your opinion and I can respect that. We can't sit here and say we know for a fact what they thought of each other or how they acted around each other over 30 years because at the end of it, it's speculation.
Going by what Bobby Z, Michael Bland, and even Prince said, they at least got along. "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Michael tore that stage up and had everybody on their feet. Prince had everybody scared because he was acting a fool on stage. Everybody has their wtf moments and that was definitly Princes. James Brown even politely handed Prince his jacket back and escorted him off LMAO. Prince was the best thing about that performance. ...even at his worst. Prince is the ably stand out in that clip and the only thing worth remembering. All these years later...its still all about P getting up there and wrecking the stage

Exactly. As I mentioned earlier, the whole Prince/MJ "rivalry" was a fake feud that the press created. The truth is,MJ and Prince hung out a few times (in 1986,they played a game of ping pong together) and even attended each other's concerts. They did not hate each other at all.I'm sure there was a fun 'friendly competition' thing going on,but that's about it.At one point,Prince was even playing a few MJ songs during his shows ("Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" was one of 'em,if I'm not mistaken)

Exactly!
Which is why I don't buy into the "friendly rivalry/cmpetition/respected each other/hung out together" crap!
Not sure why the idea of them being "buddies" is so appealing to MJ fans, but it's fantasy that never happened. Seriously.
And I'm glad it didn't happen.

Even when people who knew them like Bobby Z, Michael Bland, Cat Glover, Nik West, Bruce Swedien all say they got along [Edited 1/7/17 4:16am] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I don't know how many ways to say it..."getting along" and "being friends" are NOT the same thing.
"Getting along"...What? So, they were in the same place at the same time and later were seen still alive? No one killed the other so the assumption is they're friends?
C'mon...
There are plenty of people that you can be civil to (and there are MANY more examples of them not being so civil) but just because you're civil to someone, that doesn't mean you're friends.
Heck, they were peers, but I wouldn't even say they were colleagues...and certainly not friends.
If I ever see either of them say they were "friends" that'd be different, but the only times I've ever seen respectful rivals/friends mentioned is from other people.
In all those years, even being directly asked by interveiwers, MJ never even implied that they "got along"...and even P when asked would very carefully word his answers to be polite...But it's very simple to answer and neither of them ever directly answered, "Yes, he's my friend/Yes, I'm his friend". Not once. Ever.
Which leads me to my conclusion; that's because they weren't friends.
Somewhere in another thread someone was trying to prove they were "friends" cuz during an interveiw P was asked to do word association and when he was asked "Michael Jackson" he said "genius" then he was asked "Janet Jackson" and he said "Genius' sister". WTF was he supposed to say? He was giving answers that were polite. Doesn't mean they were friends.
On the other hand, MJ made it abundantly clear that he resented being asked about P...Doesn't sound like being friendLY to me, never mind being friends.
So class, from this we see P willing to at least be polite regarding MJ...and MJ not so much regarding P.
Genius? When has anyone ever hear MJ acknowledge P's virtuosity?...Ever?
Hmmmmmmm...

And I just thought about what Tavis Smiley said after P passed away...That P was supposedly very upset about MJ's overdose and mourned his death. Not that I believe all the details, but still...P was sad at the very least.
I honestly don't think P's passing would've been met by mourning from MJ. He might've sighed in relief that P was finally gone, but I doubt MJ would've been sad about P's passing at all.
Real talk.

Wondering, how many of Michael's interviews have you checked out? Because Michael was rarely asked about ANY other artist (Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross being exceptions). Most of the interviews he did was focused on him talking about his personal life, his nose, and trying to clear up accusations. I can honestly count on one hand of the MJ interviews from his adult life that I've read and watched and can't think of an interviewer asking him about his thoughts on another artist [Edited 1/7/17 5:37am] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. Since any tapes that exist are property of MJ's estate and if what is said to be on them would paint him as a "meanie" does anyone think they'd ever surface? I'd be surprised if they weren't destroyed long ago.
Also, no one in thier right mind could possibly think that the male children with MJ listed on thier birth certificates were "named after" P. Despite the explanations by MJ's family about Miss Kathryn's father's (?) name...Uh huh...That may have made sense for baby boy #1...but baby boy #2?...Whatever...
Besides, P's son is gone and apparently P & MG never planned on naming him after his father anyway...But do you think if his grandfather was named "Michael" he'd have named 2 of his sons that in honor of MJ? Lol
I was watching TV recently and the kid in question came on the show and the interveiwer asked him about college and MJ and stuff. Seems like a nice enough kid despite the odds. I had to laugh when he said he couldn't sing or dance and preferred to work behind the scenes. I don't blame him. Seems like a good choice to remain out of the spotlight considering MJ's family's history in entertaiment in the spotlight.
I wish the kid well. Poor thing.

I think there was a mutual, if grudging, respect. When MJ died, as described by Tavis Smiley (even if you don't believe all of it) I think it would have been shocking to P because MJ was a contemporary to which there was a long-standing connection; they were the same age and undoubtedly shared a history in terms of their experiences and standing. I think it hit home because whilst there were enormous differences, they also had a lot in common - perhaps more than we ever thought...
