Gold Experience by Jim Walsh Book Review I read an early review copy The Gold Experience by Jim Walsh and here is my review.
This book is mainly a collection of columns that were published during the 90s in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. For many here there is no new information here or surprises. The author was close to Prince and attended many concerts. A Lot of the columns are reviews of those shows. He does talk about the open letter he wrote and there are a few lines that were not in print before including one line that is sure to feed the conspiracy theories. It is a quick and easy read and a lot of these columns are not online so they have not been seen since the 90s. So if you are a compleatist or just want to spend a few hours reliving the 90s you will enjoy this book. But if you are looking for some new behind the scenes gossip you will be disappointed. My copy did not have any photographs and I think some photographs from the 90s would help. Enjoy

Yes, indeed - thank you - the 90s era of Prince fascinates me so I may well purchase this. I am particularly intrigued by the one line capable of feeding the conspiracy theories!

So...what...this is a compilation of essays? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

you've asked what everyone else was thinking! I was actually looking forward to this book but I'm unsure now

I'm excited for this book because I am in it I have been told! I went to a book signing where Jim was signing his last book "Bar Yarns and Manic‑Depressive Mixtapes: Jim Walsh on Music from Minneapolis to the Outer Limits" which has some Prince stuff in it. Jim told me that he had this book on all his Prince writing coming out and that I am in it. I guess he interviewed me in 1997 when I was waiting in line at the Target Center to get tickets for the Jam of the Year show. It should be an interesting read. I have known Jim for decades and read his stuff. Prince had him write the liner notes for the Gold Experience album which probably explains the title of the book.
Is there a thread on here for the book Heyday: 35 Years of music...inneapolis which is photography by Daniel Corrigan? I ask because the signing was also for him and his book and it is a brilliant book with TONS of Prince photos. He was First Avenue's staff photographer and shot many Prince gigs.

Since his murder is unsolved, I think you should immediately state what that one line is. I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

bookwomen has offered to share the line via orgnote but doesn't want to put it in the thread so anyone who wants to read the book won't have spoilers. That's fair enough. No? Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

FYI, Upcoming book event and signing in Minneapolis: Wednesday, February 8, 7:00pm - Magers And Quinn Booksellers Jim Walsh presents Gold Experience: Following Prince in the 90s Throughout the 1990s, Prince feuded with his record label, Warner Bros., over his rights as an independent recording artist—and made some of the most brilliant music of his career. During that time, Jim Walsh covered Prince for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and wrote about him passionately, thoughtfully, exhaustively. Here, in real time, is that coverage: a clip-by-clip look back at Prince in the ‘90s. Walsh’s newly unearthed interviews, essays, columns, and reviews make Gold Experience an essential slice of history for fans, scholars, and latecomers to the Minneapolis-born musical genius Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958–April 21, 2016). Join Walsh at the 1994 NBA All-Star game after party and release bash for the single “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” Accompany him to the after-hours clubs Erotic City, Glam Slam, and, of course, Paisley Park. Meet Prince’s wife and bandmate Mayte (and while you’re at it, take in the wedding and reception). Enjoy a two-hour sit-down interview with Prince. Explore Prince’s veganism, talk to fans in line for a Target Center show, preview the “Jam of the Year” concert and check in at the after party. The passions and influences, from Mozart to funk godfather Larry Graham; the gigs and the Paisley Park garage sale; Walsh’s open letter to the artist and his reflections on religion and spirituality. This is Prince as few have seen him, reported as only Jim Walsh can: a portrait of the artist from a dizzying array of angles, captured in living color for all time.

I guess some people are into books. Some of us ,like me are still very angry because we think something happened to him. So when someone says hey this book says something but I don't want to spoil the suprise, I feel like wait a minute, this aint no joke. Forget the book suprise , what does it say! After you've orgnoted Bookwomen, is there any chance you might be in MN to interview Mr Walsh further at his book signing mentioned above, Olivia? (I'm being serious - although, to be fair, I've no idea how close to MN you are; I'm assuming you are in the States)?

I will admit that I was a little disappointed in the book based on the description above. I was expecting some new information and new stories and that was missing.

If I lived in or near Minnesota would defiantly love to have a book signed and chat with the author. The spoiler would make it worth while.

One word of caution. I did read a review copy so it is possible this line will not be in the published book.

He would make a good interview. He was there during the 90s and he may have some new stories that he did not write about. Looking forword to this
