Eyebrows and Eyeballs

Can we all say now that Prince's use of a picture of an eyebrow and an eyeball to represent the letter I was probably THE silliest and most annoying things he ever did? You would think that a lyrical and musical genius who had so many ideas would want to write in the fastest way possible and have people understand exactly what he wanted to get across. Well, for me, someone who went to school to study fonts and such and actually design albums with liner notes, there was nothing uglier than looking at all the moronic eyebrows and eyeballs in some message Prince wanted his fans to know. He shortened Nothing Compares To You to Nothing Compares 2 U, and that was fine, it was great. But bogging down the reader's eyes WITH eyes AND eyebrows was so very, very stupid of Prince and the one thing I couldn't stand about him. It was the complete opposite of genius for me, and I'm glad other artists didn't start doing it. Now, go ahead, org, let the outrage begin, but I am correct, I think, if we can be honest.

Never bothered me. I had bigger things to worry about like if as a gay fan he genuinely liked me or not, stuff like that. But i hope you resolve your issue soon. Much love! smile

I'm going to have to be honest and say, "No!" Because Prince did some far sillier and more annoying things than that. Such as...supposedly...not having a motherfucking WILL!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

As someone who has neither studied fonts, nor designed albums with liner notes, this has never annoyed me even in the slightest. I might even go so far as to say I thought it was cute. biggrin

I always thought it was quite unique. I remember looking at the song titles on the back of Emancipation and Rave CD's back in the day and it all added to the mystery and enigma of this strangely fascinating guy...

No, it wasn't. It was him being him.

And others not using it? Uh, IT'S A FUCKING EMOJI, two or three times over. The whole fucking internet is using it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I totally agree. The eye and eyebrow thing was a little silly. Most people will defend it and try to make u seem silly ( as they have tried in the posts above) but yeah, that was pretty silly.

Prince not having a will never bothered me because...um...I wasn't a personal friend, family member, employee, sychophant or lawyer given the trememdous job of trying to sort out all his vault offerings. We all know Prince had a great sense of humour and I think he might just be in the afterworld laughing his tight bum off with David Bowie while they're on lunch from recording their duet album. Yep, just laughing and laughing and laughing that they are free of all the lovers of money.

Oh gawd you industry hacks with the liner notes. Did you ever consider that without serving an artist's work you wouldn't have a job? (former proofreader).

Do you have a problem with JRR Tolkien writing an entire language for his books?

Many languages were/are built on hieroglyphics.

Prince studied etymology.

The word eye is pretty interchangeable in Caribbean traditions (Bob Marley).

eye heart it

My other thought is that by making it more singular you spend more time reading and thinking about it. Draws you in. Another way of making you stay.

Prince worked his azz off and expected us to be willing participants in the dream, not detached consumers.

You called Prince stupid. That was "very, very stupid".

Hmmm...Prince has always been spritual. That much is a given. I always thought of his use of the "eye" had to do with his search for God...as in his belief was apparently at one point that God lives in the self, and knowing oneself, or "eye" is kind of reaching that higher plane. And the symbol of knowing oneself or having a higher level of consciousness has always been represented with an eye in shoem shape or form. When he started 3rd Eye Girl, it hit me that, yeah, this was the culmination of his search, and listening to songs from this era like Way Back Home, June, Black Muse, etc., all seem to point to his finding something that he was looking for. At least that's how I looked at it before and after his passing.

You called Prince stupid. That was "very, very stupid".

I'm not a industry hack who designs liner notes. I've changed from visual art to text art, as in an artistic novel. I called Prince very, very stupid for his use of the eyebrow and eyeball ONLY. If he heard me play guitar, he would say, "you're gutar playing is very, very stupid." I'm fairly certain. But if he tried to write an artistiic novel, I bet it would be on the novice side. Clear?

Clear that your thread is about your taste. Too many taste proclaimers in the world imo. Slice & dice instead of taking an artist's work the way it is presented. Calling Prince out as stupid in his house is bad form for any reason.

Prince was 5 years older than me. People used to critique artist's work harshly in order for the artist to think seriously about what they were making. I went to art school. I was critiqued harshly and I critiqued my fellow students harshly. It prepared us for the real world, which is harsh. An artist has to be 50% artist and 50% businessperson to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. There are many, many great artists who go unoticed all their lives. It's the work and the working that counts.

Also, a little film called Under the Cherry Moon? Didn't exactly set the film world abuzz that there was a great new film director on the rise.
