There's a scene in Purple Rain were a hotel sign indicating the Cecil Hotel can be clearly seen. Was this scene filmed near the notorious hotel of the same name in Los Angeles?

Well, they didn't have to. They did some pick-up shots there. Remember, they started filming when it was the beginning of winter. (How or why that was logical is beyond me.) I still think about Apollonia jumping in that cold ass water in October or something. But I love how Magnoli put it, "She went in the water in Minnesota, and came out in Los Angeles". I suppose it gets warmer faster in L.A. than MN. I've lived in both places (the latter in late winter), and was never so glad to leave in the next fall.

Yes, that scence if you look you can see palm trees. Check out the 2004 DVD of Purple Rain. The second disc has a voice over by the director and him gives out some good tidbits of information.

The shot of him riding his motorcycle in front of the club through the crowd in "Let's Go Crazy" is LA. Morris & Billy talking about a girl's group is L.A. Apollonia's Huntington Hotel shot is L.A. (Google Earth 34° 2'34.53"N 118°15'9.89"W ) Whenever you see that Sally's Fabrics in the background, that's Los Angeles. The Taste is L.A., I think. In the Billy & Morris shot, there's an old hotel in the far background that's pretty famous and kind of gives away that scene as being L.A.

Of course, Apples coming out of the water is L.A.
