But wait. I have a question--- If she's such an amazing artist (which I think she is) WHY are those Starfish and Coffee t-shirts so generic?

The drawings that oldfriends posted was in response to questions about the cover art for Rave89. These are not by Melvoin.

Because she took back what someone else tried to create and make money from. Questlove was wearing a shirt with those lyrics. When Susannah saw it, she called the maker of the shirt and asked him to stop. (I don't know how it ever turned out.) So, she simply took it and made it her own, since it was her story anyway. Sometimes the simplest of designs gets the most attention. The only other shirt I think would have been cool would be the starfish face image.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm sorry but those t-shirts look cheap. I agree that sometimes the simplest of designs get the most attention- I would rather even that she had t shirts made with her handwriting in cursive with her signature or something- they didn't have to be any elaborate design.

U should send her a message, with a suggestion of a new shirt idea

that would be rude and I'm not trying to be rude. All I'm saying is that when I heard she had Starfish and Coffee t shirts and I'd heard she was an artist-- I excitedly went to her FB page wanting to quickly order a shirt and then.... I didn't like them sad which is just my opinion no big deal. I had just been hoping she had done something uniquely her with the shirts. Her artwork- or her handwriting-

No, I didn't say, criticize her shirt. I'm talking about asking for more Susannah art for a t shirt

Oh right! Good idea! Although, I don't do FB--- Maybe she reads the org? I would love to have something that she did smile I heard that Prince used to have her paintings in his house. I would love to see those as well. She must be a good artist.

I went to Amazon and they have some Starfish and Coffee t-shirts but the font is not playful like the SOTT font. It's a heavy block font and it doesn't do justice to the playfulness of the song. I don't know who they are by, but I would have gotten one right away if it was the SOTT font or something similarly playful.

Susannah Melvoin on designing the Dream Factory album cover:

Prince and I used to draw together. He was actually a really great artist. I was really into it, too. I would always have a pad and I was always drawing. I've been drawing since I was a kid. We would sit down and we would draw together. One particular night he couldn't come up with an album cover (for Dream Factory). I came up with a couple of different ones. One of them was actually a dramatized version of myself, opening up a door into this dream world, with images that were based on some of the songs. I remember that there was a lot of white space, because, I couldn't fill up the background with color... Everything was kind of drawn onto white paper. But, the doors were very ornate and I'm opening the door into the Dream Factory. The second album cover didn't have me on it. It just had the name Dream Factory, with some things hanging off the words. I used to do murals in the house where Prince lived, incredible, crazy murals that he would ask me to paint. We were always into doing stuff like that.
