How Should The Prince Estate Release Vault Material?

I posted something similar to this a few years back. Would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
I personally would love it if they went the route that Jack White's record label Third Man Records does his Vault subscriptions.

Charge $60 quarterly this gets you:

Vault Package with unreleased vault material sent to you quarterly.
usually includes:
12" record
7" record
A bonus item (photo book, Live DVD, poster, shirt)

Access to exclusive merchandise

I have gotten a few vault packages from JW and they are awesome. I would love to see the Prince Estate do something similar.

What would you want? Do you want the Jack White/Third Man Records Vault Package model, or something else entirely?

Let's discuss!!!

I really don't know what I'd do with vinyls except use them as frisbees, neither with CD's or DVD's except use them as beverage coasters, and I don't want my money wasted on t-shirts and other gadget shit like that: I'm not 16 anymore to wear Prince t-shirts and put Prince posters in my bedroom.

However I believe something should be done for the hardcore, given that the ridiculous amount of material we're talking about is of no interest to your average listener and can't be mass released.

What u describe with JW is not very different than our good old NPGMC Year 1. Something like that would be perfect for me, or simply a pay per purchase online store.

But it has to be available digitally for me (and many others) to be able to enjoy it.

It should be available in as many formats as possible. Bob Dylan's Cutting Edge (studio recordings 1965-66) is a good example: a double CD for the casual fan, a 6 CD set for the diehard and an 18 CD set for the completist. Those box sets usually gather some media attention and remind everybody how great these artists are/were.

Quickly.

I'd like to think that they won't keep fans waiting 10 years. By which point it could be Tykas kids in control of what gets released when.

.

Simple:

As many CD's as possible.

One per month?

I could pay $20 per CD including shipping if the tracks are uncirculating.

There's too much to be relased anyway so please hurry!

I'd like to see unreleased vault material handled like this:

First of all, transfer and catalogue the entire archive in the vault.

Pick the best studio material from the vault and sequence them into box sets that showcase certain years (for example: 1976 - 1981, 1982-83, 1984-85, 1986 etc etc). You could easily have a 4-6 disc set from each period (probably more for the 86 and 87 years) but only the best stuff should be made available. Include Prince's original studio recordings of songs that he gave to other artists ("Manic Monday", "The Dance Electric", "Mutiny", "Nothing Compares 2 U", "All Day, All Night" etc).

Release the best complete live shows in a box set for each of Prince's tours (for example: Diamonds & Pearls Tour Box Set, Parade Tour Box Set etc etc). Include a Blu-Ray of a complete show and any corresponding TV appearances from the era!

Any unreleased studio and live albums in the archives (including "Crystal Ball", "The Dream Factory", "Camille" etc) should be made available.

Set up a proper Prince website that will allow fans to download and buy the complete discography (including all official albums, singles and all of the tracks that were made available through the NPG Music Club) in high quality mp3, FLAC as well as buy official merchandise.

Remaster and re-release all of the albums by The Time, Sheila E, The Family, Jill Jones & Madhouse (with B-Sides & Single Edits). If there are any live recordings by The Time & Sheila E in the vaults, make them available!! It goes without saying that all of Prince's albums should be remastered and re-released too. I think if they do this, then they should come with all of the B-Sides, single edits etc and unreleased material should be saved for box sets unless it was originally intended for the album (like the long version of Computer Blue!).

That's what I'd like to see!!

Again people talk about the vault. I don't think his released stuff has even been digested properly. It needs to be reassessed. And again nasty but without prince that would be far easier

Two tiers.

1. A website and we can download rarities a la carte. Put everything on there. Live shows, rehearsals, videos, unfinished stuff, etc.

2. Physical releases of the finished stuff and special stuff like a Piano & Microphone DVD set to include the complete Jan 21 shows, The Second Coming DVD, Black is the New Black CD, other albums like Roadhouse Garden, Remastered albums, and perhaps a special definitive box set with vault material.

This. For hardcore fans where they can progressively release and archive everything. Include an additional premium download option for those who desire it.

The casual public would probably be best served by selected, heavily curated material.

But to monetise the majority of the vault's contents you need the regular money of hardcore fans - fans who want that unreleased album from 2008; fans who want everything.

There's nothing going on in the Prince world right now... Most of us have gotten over our grief... A compilation CD isn't going to keep us excited for very long... We know he had tons of unreleased music... We all want to hear it... So what else are we going to talk about?

I'm with you Guitar Hero! I'm a hard copy type of person! I'd love a coffee table book too that I can look at and that people can look at when they come to my home. I spent a lot of time as a kid looking at coffee-table books and I still enjoy these books as an adult.

Fair enough and i've got nothing against releasing stuff physically, even though I'm fully digital these days and everything gets ripped with the physical media storead away. If I can get lossless audio I have no need for physical media.

We aren't going to get everything put out there physically are we? It can't be possible. But... Let's have an online repository where, for example, we can go listen to all 21 nights of the London '07 shows along with all those aftershows. Get all the live shows on there, all the unfinished studio stuff, all the rehearsals, all the videos. I'd certainly pay a monthly fee for that.

I would hate any kind of subscription service. Especially for 60 quid every 3 months like the OP suggests.

The way I think it should be done is for them to organise a remaster series whereby each album is remastered and includes a second disc if unreleased songs from that era. For the likes of Purple Rain and Sign O The Times they could do special editions which include a live show or the movie the albums are associated with. So do that for all of his WB albums. Then, for any unreleased songs from the mid 90's onwards or leftovers from the WB years, they could set up an iTunes type online service where you can buy and keep the songs for between 50 cent to 1 euro (or pound or dollar) depending on quality/length/demo versions etc.

That way, fans are happy because they can choose what they want to buy on an individual basis and not have to pay for a subscription to hear maybe only a handful of songs they'd be interested in. The estate would be making a decent amount of money from the downloads and the special edition remasters would sell well enough too because by including the second disc of outtakes, there is incentive for fans who already own the albums to repurchase them.

Yes and no.

Here's the thing if Paisley Park contains 30 years of concert recordings (on top of studio outtakes, alternate versions, remixes, demos, jam sessions & rehersals... Thats too much music. You can't sell all of it. Frankly I'd like to hear it while I'm still young enough to dance.

It's too much for any one person... or even several people, to actually go though, realistically. It would take decades. Not only would it take forever, you'd be relying othe opinion of one person - which could be vastly different from the next person.

How do you even begin to manage this much music (if it exists). Without crowd-sourcing it to fans? (I'm thinking mainly of the live stuff).

So what if it takes decades? ...Who's going to buy an obscure recording of Prince live in 20 years time? 1,000 people? His albums were only selling a few hundred thousand copies... Prince went to war with his fanbase. The estate has some bridge building to do before Prince is auto-selling a million copies.

The idea that 30 years of music could be drip-fed over another 30 years is just unrealistic when most of his fans are here & hungry today. Sales will always decrease over time.

Not to mention the 20 or so remasters/deluxe editions they must be planning.

There was a documentary ("Hunting for Prince's vault" I think it was called) where Sonny T was asked if everything from the vault should be released. His answer: No!
Why not?
Because you'd be sitting there for ten years!

Personally i don't care too much for jam sessions & rehersals, just the outtakes and some alternate versions. Not all the live material just some, the most important ones.
