So can we all take a moment to reflect on Erotic City? This song is beyond pure sex....but more like a Dyonesian trance where the listener finds himself helplessly transported to a midsummer's night dream type of world where muses and night blue fairies sprinkle sparkley lavender scented dust that makes you ooze into a red-molten sexual substance. A world where upon once you set foot your life can never be quite the same. What are the hidden forces behind this song? ...What's it's story? How was this song ever played on the radio and what was your reaction to first hearing it? Where was Prince's head at when he made it? Was he possessed by the devil or some other evil force? Is this one of the song's P felt most guilty about after becoming a Jehova's witness? Did he totally renounce it? When was the last time he performed it live? Better yet, what era did this song usher in and what was its impact on music and ultimately the world?

As I recall... back in the day, the song wasn't something played on top 40 radio. It was a cult hit / somewhat underground. I first heard it in a club then found it on vinyl. I imagine that's exactly how he intended it, too.

As a kid listening to this song I always thought he said, 'we can funk until the dawn...'. I swear I didn't even know the lyrics were otherwise until after he died and I read on here what he says. And now that i know I can't believe he got away with it on the radio (I do remember hearing this song on the radio back then). Maybe the radio version said 'funk', I don't know. Anyway I immediately liked the song and thought it had a funky beat. And I love his low register on this song.

Any discussion of Erotic City must include the song "White Horse". Prince apparently stole some of the key elements of it for Erotic City: . . But I still love Erotic City and P obviously added a whole lot to it. [Edited 12/11/16 19:45pm]

No, this song is on the flip side of Let's Go Crazy so it would not have been played on top 40 radio it fact none of Prince's B sides Mage it in top 40 however, Eroctic City was played on RnB routinely until it was banned in the early 90s. I was 16 and could not believe this in the radio.

That was the time when P could do no wrong, he got away with everything

As for where Prince's head was when he wrote it, it was inspired by a George Clinton concert he saw at the time. And George also did his own version of it.

Erotic City was THE club banger in the mid 80s all the way up to the early 90s. People often went nuts when this song was played in clubs. A few years later Get Off became Prince´s new club anthem. After that, there weren´t any big club hits that had the same impact as those two songs, and in comparison, Erotic City was much bigger than Get Off. . It´s true that Laid Back´s White Horse preceded Erotic City as far as the relase date goes, and maybe Prince was inspired by it because it sure sounds like it but as far as I recall, him and Laid Back were on good terms and there´s even a WB promo single that has a Prince song and a Laid Back song on it. . . Erotic City is one of my all time favorite Prince songs. Great intro, great bass, great melody, almost sounds like a nursery rhyme. And the record cover looked great, too. Both sides looked great. The font, the colors, the pictures that they used...just sheer perfection. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

It WAS played on Chicago radio back in 84 a few times as I remember specifically hearing it and the DJ saying it was "funk" not "f-word" until dawn. Once it became common knowledge it was "fuck" I didn't hear it after that.

O heard this played on our top 40 station, but it was some kind of edited one, because we were shocked when we heard the actual 12" vinyl. The edit I remember had a verse repeated twice to omit the "We can fuck until the dawn, making love till cherry's gone"
Does this edit exist as something you can buy?

. In terms of total dance funk I have never read truer words. . These two tracks are musical towers that will continue to stand in my subconscious until I hit the dirt. . I use these two tracks to convert people to P on the regular and they have never failed.

One of his best club bangers, I love this song! It obviously was (partially) inspired by Laidback's "White Horse", another fantastic club classic from that era. * I remember when I was a teenager during the 80's and I didn't have money to buy all of his albums. I always bought the first single of a new album (starting in 1984 with When Doves Cry) and then I made sure I had enough money to buy the new Prince album when it came out. But then I found out that our housemaid/cleaner was a huge Prince fan and had all his albums, singles and 12 inches! So one day I went to her house with some cassette tapes and recorded all the stuff I didn't have yet. What a treasure! * That's how I layed my hands on Erotic City amongst others (initially, later on I bought most of it myself). I had heard Erotic City before on the radio and it had clicked with me immediately. That beat, that bass, those synth chords, the sped up guitar and vocals. And let's not forget the subject matter of the song, wow! very inspiring to me as a horny teenager! * Finding songs like Erotic City on b-sides was one of the greatest aspects of being a Prince fan at that time to me. Such great songs ususally, often even better than some of the tracks that had actually made it to the new Prince album of that year. Good old times! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

People always mention Whitehorse, but when Prince inducted P-Funk into the RHOF, he said he was inspired to write this song the night he saw P-Funk play live with a stage full of people singing "Not Just Knee Deep." George Clinton's yen for pitch-adjusting is an inspiration for Camille. Alan Leeds suggests as much in the Hits/B-Sides liner notes (and positions Camille as an alter-ego in the vein of Clinton's Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk).
I heard this on Kitchener's 91.5 The Beat - the morning drive no less - the morning Prince came to Toronto for the 2004 Musicology tour. The DJ, "Mocha," said "he's saying 'funk' so we can play it." Lolz.
The beat on this motherfucker is genius. There are a few Prince tunes I love as much, but maybe no Prince tune I love more. This is the canon, the creme-de-la-creme.

Yes, this was how I discovered it, too. They'd play both at dance and after hours clubs. It never made it to the radio in the city I lived in. God is my Sugar Daddy.

Yes, I know many people including myself have learned things from the org. No, I didn't expect to learn today so many years after I first heard itthat on Erotic City Prince says fuck instead of funk.

I always thought this song was brilliant lyrically and a slap in the face of sexually conformist domesticity. It is Prince's Anti-breeder, Anti-monogamy classic.

I remember when this song first came out and they played it at my 8th grade graduation dance. The adults all thought he was saying "funk" and we were all THRILLED. 2 sevens together

Amazingly, it did receive a lot of airplay due to the "funk" lyrics...a subversively sly example of Prince's wit.

I love this song! I remember hearing this song on the radio as a kid in the 90s without knowing that it was a Prince song. It wasn't until I truly discovered his music at 16 that I found out that not only its a Prince song, but it was pretty dirty. Everytime I hear the intro I have to do a body roll and repeat the intro at least 4 times Forever In My Life, forever in my heart. I love you Prince Rogers Nelson
