The only thing i can say in that regard, from my perspective, he could have done more revision before he released some songs. you could tell he was rushing through some productions, especially B sides. I think some of the tracks on batman sound like he rushed them too, but fore the most part, the only things i'd like to see edited was the hip hop stuff. |

GM has been very open and honest about the time when Prince rang him to get support for his 'Slave' campaign. To quote GM, he told Prince to "f**k Off".

GM has always stood up to other stars as he doesn't subcribe to celebrity. He once slapped down Madonna once for being rube to a studio runner at Sarm West Studios.

Genuine fella, George seemed to be. Never heard about these things before. Much respect! Get in your mouse, and get out of here! |

i don't know how serious he was about any of that, meaning the celebrity thing. He was just as self-centered and self-aggrandizing as any of the 80's stars, just listen to his lyrics "me,me,me" And as far as his production, i lost interest with the listen without prejudice album, i'm listening to his music now an I have to say, i still love the shit out of his wham songs but still ain't getting into "Freedom 90". The celebrity thing, maybe he did outgrow that, honestly, he seemed like a pretty good guy from what we're hearing. I wonder why he told prince to fuck off? and did he say it that way? they were fighting the same enemy I wonder what his reason was. not fair really because he was heavily influenced by both Prince and MJ as well as all the black music before them but he took a lot from mj and prince, he did a lot of mj stuff with his vocals, the exhortations and whatnot. |

I m not sure if he told Prince to fuck off. But I saw him speaking that his case was different, because it was in the first contract he signed, while Prince re-signed with WB in the early 90s, after being a mega star. I agree with him. |

This thread was started BEFORE GM's death. If you don't like it, then pass over it. There is no need to take it down.
actually, i do feel kinda bad for some of the things I said. they weren't really meant malicious but i didn't know he'd die in two weeks.
There's that self righteous indignation thing rearing its entitled little head again.

By the way, if I recall correctly, George was at the Tränenpalast show in 1994 after the MTV Music Awards. My memories are a bit blurry but I think I saw Prince walking up the stairs toward George back then and they talked briefly.
Jean Paul Gaultier and Naomi Campbell were standing right next to me, and German singer Herbert Grönemeyer was right behind me.
Seriously, let both people rest in peace. I don´t like these comparisons.
He was, I was there too. George even standing on a chair to see better.

I imagine so but they both were working against the same force. Same issues I think. I think Bono said that about Prince too, that anyone who signs a contract these days without reading it deserves what he gets. Either way, Prince, with his work ethic, his spirit and heart was able to get himself out of the corner. My point is, an artist should not have to be as superhuman as Prince was just to get his level of freedom. Only his work ethic and talent saved him from being left broke a long time ago. Part of it being his own fault, my understanding was that he put all his money back into his art. i still have an article around 94 where, susan rogers i think, was bemoaning the fact that prince was becoming broke and irrevelant, she said something along the lines of "rem and u2 will be able to send their kids to college, poor Prince put all his money back into his art and now he's broke" you see, everyone had written him off at that point and truth is, anyone else would have been done at that point, anyone but Prince (or maybe James Brown). |

Stood on a chair?? When a megastar does something like that at another Megastar performance....maybe its because he's really that enthralled and not even a little bit because he's also saying hey look at me too.

Yes, the whole show had more of an aftershow or club concert vibe to it.
Back then, most artists who participated at the MTV Music Awards also agreed to showing up or performing at other locations later that night but Prince was nowhere on the lists. So my friends and I started looking for possible venues where he might perform, and I saw some boxes with equipment and noticed the letters PRN on them, so that´s how we knew where he´d play (at the Tränenpalast in the Friedrichstr. in Berlin).
Entrance fee was 50 DM back then and there were many, many celebrities in attendance.
Pretty good show despite some technical problems.
Good times !

LOL It was Prince we met at the hotel. He started to flirt, I shared the story before. I got to kiss him indeed but not that day.

is that right? you mean in the 80's right? I heard so many stories over the years, they don't exactly paint the picture of a guy who liked his boundaries invaded. One of the funnier ones was when he was not a star at all, he was promoting For You and he was kissing girls then a big chunky girl said "oh, he's giving out kisses but i want mine on the lips" Husney, his manager said he gave him a look and Husney cracked up. I've also heard, around purple rain era that he would rip up autographs and make girls cry and once said "show some respect" when crowds got too pushy. Now, the parade era was him trying to turn over a new leaf, some people liked it, some people didn't. I pretty much accepted him any way he came. |

Me too, that's why he trusted me. I don't care for hearsay, those stories, I wasn't around then. I was around in the 90s and 2000s and I can only speak about what I experienced.
