We Can Funk original version appreciation I'm playing this song super loud right now and it helps with the pain of his death. I have only listened to Lovesexy after he died but today I'm playing We Can Funk the original version without George Clinton.
I feel good listening to this gem. what year was it recorded? I have it on the Box O Chocolates boot with amazing sound.
I have reached acceptance now. peace out and all the love in the world for us purple people.

Love the epic outro with the descending chords. It's even great in the released version!
And of course the musical (The Dawn?) 1986 revision of it is great too! My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

. It was initially tracked in early-to-mid 1983, and overdubbed on several occasions from late 1983 through Summer 1986. This recording, abandoned during the Dream Factory era, was dusted off and reworked for George Clinton's 'The Cinderella Theory' album 1988-1989, from which the 'Graffiti Bridge' version is drawn. . . It's quite likely that, in the pre-Graffiti Bridge album mixes that are circulating, there is no overlapping 'funk' to partially mask the explicitness of the original lyric. . The 'We Can Funk' (30 Years) bootleg is a good example of the state of the song as of 1986, when it was last worked on, prior to the overdubbing and mixing for 'The Cinderella Theory' and GB several years later; it retains the additional verse and some of the omitted synth. . The 10+ minute version has numerous additional 'very 1983' synth lines, and an additional guitar part (riffed by Prince during the 31 December 1983 jam session on the song with numerous of the Coleman and Melvoin families present), that are on the multitrack but omitted from the mix in other known circulating versions; the extended suite 'dream' part utilizes the same patch as on 'The Beautiful Ones'. . I believe the sitar introduction was added by David Coleman on that New Year's Eve date as well, and retained on all subsequent versions; the tribal drumming on the very early demo I believe is also a Coleman contribution. Wendy and Lisa's suspenseful chorus reminds me of the similar one on 'Crystal Ball'. . He seems to have added a prefatory, late-80s-appropriate 'safe' to the 'sex between two people is all right' line on final GB album version. GB version also adds a 'Batdance'-esque 1989 electric guitar solo, and that 1988-1990 sound library 'lower end' sample used noteably on 'Melody Cool' and 'Sex'. . [Edited 12/4/16 15:30pm]

This song is freaking unreal! I like the version you reference the most as well, the vocals are really highlighted..
Many Prince songs have these little moments that almost stand on thier own in my head.. this song has one of those moments for me "I can teach you things aboutcha B... B.. .Body baby..."

. There is a 10+ minute version circulating. I am not keen on the mix in this circulating leak, however, as it has some of the George Clinton-era overdubs, and some of the 1983 multitrack not used in the other mixes, and the combination of the two leaves an odd taste in my mouth. It is also in poor audio quality. It should be on iVault (in the 1989 or 1990 folder), Work It, Work It 2.0, and other commonly available sources. [Edited 12/5/16 14:38pm]

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Love the original. I sometimes listen to the GB versions, but the original in my opinion is the best by far. Love the keyboards towards the end. Very similar but also very different at the same time. The original is so emotionally connected from start to the very end, while George Clinton is just going through the motions. The extended parts at the end of the different GB versions are really cool though.

Especially the dream part and how he brings the main theme back at the end. Actually I always love it when he does extended suites. The wooh is on the one!

The 1986 version is the one for me. . I got it on a boot back in the day in sequence with Girl Of My Dreams / Can't Stop This Feeling I Got / WCF / Data Bank and was totally blown away
