That Floral SHirt and matching tie tho...
That shirt looks like a couch on an episode of "Golden Girls". I cringed at some of those dance moves. Still scratch my head at seeing him with his butt backed up and thrusting through the other dancer's groin, but he wouldn't sing "Bad" with Michael Jackson? Not homophobic - just confounded.
I don't think the lyric, 'Your butt is mine' necessarily had homosexual connotations which worried Prince - it was more the suggestion that 'I (MJ) own you / am better than you'. No way would Prince have allowed THAT to be the inference!

That particular dance move was one of the highlights of that era for many that appreciated Prince's bold form of gender binary expression that challenged what was/is considered to be "social norms".
i'm sure it was but for some of us who always rooted for prince, and realizing that many people didn't like him, not just because of the homophobia but also because he was "strange", any of those people who might have been swayed by the rest of the performance, which was brilliant as usual, had to be going "oh goddamn, change the channel". Personally, i didn't care, i just knew it wouldn't help his cause. Didn't seem to hurt his sales though, it was his best selling album since PR i think. Also, i never heard a mention about that move, in those days the internet didn't exist for people to gossip and most people that you ran across really didn't care one way or the other or even watch.
That dance move, coupled with the infamous yellow "butt-out" outfit, had me groaning for the same reason.
I didn't personally care or find them offensive, but it was just more ammunition for those who were looking for reasons to not like him.
I just rolled my eyes at the TV when those incidents happened.

Prince also didn't want to play the villain role to Michael's good guy role. I don't think he ever perceived of himself as an antagonist to anyone and was probably a bit insulted that Michael did.
Great clip. The D & P era really showed Prince could do full on choreographed dance routines as good as or better than anyone else at that time. |

Hahaha! More fool them - I wasn't a huge P fan at the time (although D&P was the first of his albums I actually bought) - but even I thought he had one helluva nice arse and was more than happy to see it 'cheekily' showing its perky little face! |

I'm so glad that P never fell into that...or any of the other crap the media was trying to market him as, geared towards teenyboppers.
Remember the way the media kept paing Donny Osmond with the other guy at awards shows? Holding the lil Rodney Allen Rippy and such? Like they were Black and White twins?
So cringeworthy.
If P had allowed it, that would've been his fate in the media...But I think that was all waaay too corny for Baby Boy, but also P had his mind on far more edgy and interesting things.
I'm so glad. |

Prince and his entire crew grew up wishing they could be where MJ was at
and MJ was already a legend by the time Prince released his debut album.
How does Prince have the edge over the biggest selling and most loved musical artist ever?

Wow amazing!! Prince definitely has the edge over Michael Jackson. There are so many dimensions of Prince genius going on here in this treasure people recognize that there really is no battle. I feel the whole "Nothing Can Stop" campaign in fullest effect here.

I wonder if this was filmed for that unreleased tour documentary he had made around that time for POV Films. Seems like rehearsal footage spliced together. We saw a bit of this in the Omnibus documentary. Very cool to see the whole thing. I loved seeing it on Arsenio back in the day, too. I remember reading that the actual Daddy Pop video was filmed in LA and featured trampolines.
trampolines. Would have been better than the roller skates in Gangster Glam.
.
Yes, I remember seeing a very short clip in the Omnibus documentary. |
