lol. Thanks! According to Prince and those around him, they were watching a special about Nostradamus and it really hit home.
“We were sitting around watching a special about "1999," and a lot of people were talking about the year and speculating on what was going to happen. And I just found it real ironic how everyone that was around me whom I thought to be very optimistic people were dreading those days, and I always knew I'd be cool. I never felt like this was going to be a rough time for me. I knew that there were going to be rough times for the Earth because of this system is based in entropy, and it's pretty much headed in a certain direction. So I just wanted to write something that gave hope, and what I find is people listen to it. And no matter where we are in the world, I always get the same type of response from them.”
The song was likely recorded in his home studio on July 14, 1982 according to my notes.
I don't know if that answers 'where was he'. He was in his home studio if that solves anything.
Wow cool thx. But waitasec, did u actually get to interview Prince himself for your book or is this from an interview he gave?
No. Never reached out to speak to him about this project. I felt it was best to be under the radar for a project of this scope. It was written and finished while he was still alive, so I've often wondered what he'd have thought. It honors his work and dedication, but is also a real look at how he got all of the people around him to share in his dreams. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. So I'm confused: where does the quote above come from? |

Correct.
There have been several people who've mentioned that they were watching an Orson Welles documentary about Nostradamus/end of times before Prince wrote it. I don't think Prince researched eschatology in depth, but 1999 and Purple Rain seemed to indicate an interest in it. So as u once said 1999 indeed wasn't recorded on the same day as LRC and MB |

No, that was one of those legends that turns out to be more hype. All three of those tracks were done on seperate days. There was a lot of fear for an upcoming nuclear war in the early 80s. We even had a word for it in Dutch: doemdenken ("doom thinking"). This song was just the perfect musical expression of that feeling. Dancing on a volcano... (That's another Dutch saying.) |

I may be wrong but I thought it was from Nilsen's research. If so I wonder who told him that. I'm glad u did a more thorough research. Did you find a lot of other info contradicting previous research? In fact did u get in touch with Nilsen to start things off where he left them or did you start from scrach? |

Per Nilsen and I have been friends for over 20 years. I was a writer/researcher for Uptown magazine and was responsible for a lot of the dates that we had for the original books (The Vault, DMSR, Days Of Wild, etc.). Per and I have kept in touch and he offered me access to about 75 hours of interviews conducted for our old projects. Some were interviews I conducted, but some were interviews done by others with people I didn't get a chance to meet.
The newest dates for his sessions come from that original research, but also from the WB vaults and records filed with musician unions, studio notes, the Library of Congress and many private journals from those who were there. It has been a really exhaustive search for as many details as possible.
Per is very familiar with what I've been up to for this book and we've discussed the findings multiple times. I hope to get a copy to him soon so he can review it as this is a project that he'd probably enjoy.

Getting back to my question>>>
I wonder which was his normal way of doing a song, that is ... Write lyrics and then put music to go with the lyrics OR Make music and then put some lyrics to go with the music OR while writing the lyrics he hears the music simutaneoulsy to go with the lyrics???
Was this ever discussed in a Interview or Book? |

From every individual story I've read about how such or such song was born it seems it would usually be a spontaneous thing: he would compose the lyrics and the music and record the whole thing as he hears it in his mind all at the same time. But again if anyone knows more about this it'd be Madhouseman. |

It's definintely impressive Recently some former 90's collaborator said we'd never see him rehearse lyrics or dance steps, it was just always ready when needed. |
