Prince's Ability to Harmonize Just listened to the audio soundboard of Montreux 2013. Amazing! I never had the benefit of hearing Prince live in concert with the big band sound. God, it was good. I could really hear on Big City how incredible his ability to harmonize was. It was seemingly effortless, and Big City is a fast song too. And as I've noticed before but couldn't hear as well until I heard this today, his part was often not easy to sing. It got me thinking about how some people say (even he implied a few times) that maybe his talent was honed or learned or achieved just from practice. Not so. It takes natural ability to be able to harmonize like that.

Not only that but I always found his ability to harmonize with HIMSELF on recordings unparalleled. His background vocal layering has been SLEPT on and they should teach classes about it. I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore...

In one of the films that came out in 92 some of the NPG members were talking about the recording of "7" and how he recorded each backing track as if it was a lead vocal. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

P was a master when it came to his melody and harmony. Underrated in my opinion. Didn't he mention that he had laid down 14 vocal tracks for Man O War? Dude was a genious. I think songs like Black Muse and Baltimore (the ending) really show his ability to harmonize within a great melody. Speaking about seeing him live; I am so glad that I took the time and effort to see him perform live. Thank goodness we have video. I miss Prince. klick

Adonis and Bathsheba is a perfect example of how great of a background vocalist he is. AKA PDEXTER

Some really great points made here and some great song suggestions, thanks.

The thing that gets me is that his vocal harmony arrangements seem to have a signature sound to them - typified by those in THUNDER I haven't yet worked out whether it is the way he picked the harmonies or his distinctive voice and how it blends with itself - or most likely a mixture of the 2 I plan to analyse what is going on using MELODYNE (which is a software tool that should be able to separate the harmony parts of any "vocal only" sections ) Does anyone have any good suggestions on songs where there are just harmony vocals and no instruments?

I am curious about anything related to Prince's Studio work/practice/habit, does anyone know what this comment might be refering to? Id like to watch it.

Three live shows (among many others) that I'd love to see officially released: Dakota Jazz - 2013 SXSW - 2013 Montreux - 2013 I might be in the minority but I loved the NPG Hornz thing he had going then. And while I was never a fan of horns on LGC the horns on 1999 at Montreux sound amazing. Paisley Park is in your heart

question: were there any prerecorde backing vocals? i think he used some for One Night Alone shows and he was trying to use some means of using programed backing vocals and instruments for some live shows at another point to try to make it more interactive... so the band would not need to know all the songs... I forget when it was but I remember reading about it and that they tried it out but it did not work well so it was scraped. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Totally agree... once you get them headphones on and hear what he does with harmonies, cold chills every time. There are a few brief little moments of harmony in "Look At U, Look At Me" that are amazing, just as a recent example
