Why are all the music award shows snubbing Prince? So I just finished watching the Soul Train awards and there was oddly no mention of Prince. I watched mid way through the award show so I figured maybe a tribute was given in the first half but it wasn't! This is outrageous given Prince appeared on the show numerous of times and was one of the pillars of Soul music. This is not the first time Prince has been snubbed by an award show. At the VMA's this year, there also was no acknowledgement or tribute to Prince. So far the only two award shows that have given Prince a tribute have been Billboards, Ama's BET. Why does it feel like Prince is not being given his rightful respect by the industry? I feel that there should definitly be more tributes given since he was one of the last living geniuses and icons of our time. I noticed too that it feels like the iindustry has move on from Prince and its like"business as usual", thoughts? WTF Prince is a LEGEND and deserves better, Thoughts? I know this won't change the fact that Prince is a legend and Icon but this has been very disappointing. [Edited 11/27/16 23:08pm] |

The whole tribute thing is hypocritical on the fan's part. Why?
Because fans will carry Prince's purple flag all day and night, chanting "awards don't matter" or "Prince wasn't into awards", or quoting lyrics "I don't care to win awards...". They totally dismiss award shows because Prince didn't care much for them.
Then they flip the coin: When Prince walks on stage at an award show, then suddenly everyone is interested. They see Prince's presence as a pass of viability for the same award show he probably dismissed years prior. Prince wins an award, then it's "oh wow, so cool of them!" Uh huh, where were you with that last year when they didn't mention him?
But if the same award show doesn't mention his name after every other tampon commercial, then suddenly the award shows are snubbing him, or disrespectful to his legacy. HOW COULD THEY?! IT'S AN OUTRAGE! WE NEED A PETITION!
Oh please, sit down already. You can't have it both ways. Stop with the digital gesticulation and pseudo-outrage over someone not mentioning his name. If it's "disappointing", then stop putting your hopes in something that isn't relevant to you. And if it is relevant, then whatever that thing does is your reward. You thought it was enough of a something to invest your energy into. Enjoy it, you picked it.
Frankly, I'm done with the tributes over and over. Let the man rest. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

But this has...nothing to do with awards specifically. I don't care if an award show ever awards Prince again because his legacy is cemented in stone and an award is no indicator of genius, impact or status. However, my criticism is related to the lack of respect the industry is showing him and their limited recognition of his impact on music and accomplishments considering he was one of the few living legends that unfornately recently passed. Considering the immense impact he had on the MTV culture back in the 80s and the Soul Train awards in the 90's, he definitly was snubbed and deserved to be recognized for his contributions to both channels, especially MTV, that was a HUGE snub. He was one of only two Black artists that was in heavy rotation in the 80s on MTV, and Prince did not get not ONE mention, disgraceful! Again, I don't care about an award, I care about giving deceased legends their proper RESPECT especially when they recently passed. [Edited 11/28/16 1:46am] |

I thought the same while watching the soul train awards last night. It being a black based award show I thought they would have had a mention at least. Prince was huge in the music world and deserves better. |

People as talented as Bowie and Prince suffer(ed) from industry jealousy. Makes everyone else look bad. Plus suits can't think past the next 5 minutes. Brand new boogie without the hero. |

Oh for god's sake. Not everything is a conspiracy. They program these awards shows based on attracting and retaining the most TV viewers. If a Prince tribute helped them accomplish that goal, they would do it. End of story. And the reality is, people/things DO move on. For people who aren't intense fans, this is now sort of older news. That's just a reality.

No conspiracy at all. If you think Prince was beloved by the all the suits in the industry you are wrong. Also why would the audience for the Soul Train awards not be fans? How many fans of Teddy Riely and Brandy do you think tuned in?

Laura, why don't you ask the Soul Train Awards people about how they programmed this apparently very important and indicative awards show? Again, if you're suggesting that the esteemed Soul Train people intentionally did something (e.g., refused to include a Prince tribute) that lowered the appeal of their TV show for their target audience because that shady cabal of suits "don't like Prince" and wanted to spite his memory, then that is the very definition of the word "conspiracy."

And for the record, this is the last time I engage with you. After being on the receiving end of quite a few insults from you over the past months -- and seeing your insatiatble need to argue along with your utter lack of friendliness or good humor -- I realized that there's more engaging ways to spend my time, and, like many, many orgers, have greatly reduced my participation here. So have fun, and god bless.

AGREE, its pretty disrespectful. MTV now caters to the current pop stars BUT what would have been wrong in paying a small tribute to Prince, ONE of the pioneers of the MTV network or even David Bowie??? It is important for the young generation to be exposed to pioneers and artists that came before the current crop especially ones that played a intergral role in pioneering the music industry into what it is now. I don't like how TODAYS industry disrespects legends, I really don't. It feels like they hype up current acts more than legends. |
