Prince donated $12,000 to The Western Branch Library in Louisville after he heard it would be closing. The library was the first full-service library for African Americans in this country.

Prince was nothing if not generous. I saw this somewhere awhile back. Thanks for sharing.

i saw a jim brown interview the other day, and he was saying how if you want attention for the good you do then you're not sincere. I thought of Prince right away.

I heard about that on some podcast not too long ago.

Rachel Davis Harris (1869-1969) was the first African American female director of a public library branch in Kentucky. She was appointed director of the Colored Branches of the Louisville Free Public Library in 1935 after the death of the previous director, Reverend Thomas Fountain Blue.

In January 1914, the Eastern Colored Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library was opened. Harris was appointed as the branch's manager. She also served as the branch's children’s librarian. Later that year, Harris was the keynote speaker at the dedication service for the Cherry Street Branch of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Public Library in Evansville, Indiana. The title of her speech was “The Advantages of Colored Branch Libraries.” The Cherry Street Branch was a Carnegie library that served the African American residents of Evansville, Indiana. It was in operation from 1914-1954. Fannie C. Porter, one of the students in Reverend Blue's training program, was the Cherry Street Branch's first manager (1914-1915). Porter was later succeeded by Lillian Haydon Childress Hall, the earliest known African American to receive a formal library science education in Indiana.

There's an interview when the host says he checked and Prince already gave away over 200 million dollars to charity. Prince looked humble surprised. He was always helping folks with $$ money.

Prince was one of the most kind & giving beings that ever walked this earth! If he saw there was a need, he wanted to help -- he wanted to be a part of doing good in the world. It mattered to him.

How in the world is it considered "racist" if you want to give to a particular charity?

For example, I told God that if I ever won the Lotto, I would give money to help the impoverished children in the town where I grew up and I would give back to the community. So, would that make me racist against the wealthy?

Prince gave where it was needed; he did a heck of a lot more than most who have/had his wealth!!

So if he had kept it all he'd have been worth half a billion dollars. Makes sense cuz I saw a report right after he passed where his net worth was estimated as $800million then it was reported as $300million. Now it sounds like that's because he gave away nearly half of his money.

I love that.

Yeah, I saw it not long after he passed. Was hoping someone would remember which interview it was. I think he gave money away from the get - not just in the past few years. One of his quotes was "Money is best spent on those who need it".

Generally when people give to a charity it is because it's something close to their heart and has meaning to them. Leave it to somebody to now even complain about the money he gave to those charities.

*sigh* Prince couldn't even do something nice, without somebody picking it a part.

damn right, i heard that dr. dre gave money to, what was it? UCLA? what the hell do they need millions of dollars for? It might help him get points in this society but it's not where it's needed most, not even close. That's when you gotta question a guys sincerity.
