Bro Jules — "support my release, not 4ever"

An EP of The Remix Experience by Brother Jules is circulating. Included with the EP is a PDF of a letter from Jules:

.

.

Why speak ill towards a release that Prince sanctioned? Anyone know the thinking behind this?

No thanks. His remixes are garbage, IMO.

I wonder why Jules is acting like it's a "support mine not 4ever" choice? And, honestly, I have no idea why he thinks someone is more likely to support his mixes than a real release of Moonbeam Levels. Why not suggest people do both?

Frankly, I've heard EVERYTHING that's on 4ever, and only parts of the Remix Experience. At least I know everything on 4ever is worth my time. The pieces of the Remix Experience I've heard are emarrassing, to be kind.

I actually bought his latest Remix E.P. and rather enjoy listening to it. I look forward to more releases from him. I may be the freak of the org for liking what he does but I don't think Prince would have employed him if he didn't like the way he did things. At least with Jules you know you are dealing with someone who worked for and with Prince. I have no desire to buy that CD that WB is releasing! I think it's a waste of money to buy a CD that only has one song that I haven't heard a million times before on radio.

Interesting old post from the 90s from alt.music.prince pertaining to Jules and his remixes, specifically mentioning his 'remix experience'. don't know if it's the same as what's being circulated today because I've not heard it but interesting info all the same

I fail to see how this can be an official release.

Based on content alone, it's just so bad. I'll be buying 4ever and giving this shite a miss.

Well it's nice that he says the money goes to charity. But why does it have to be one or the other?

I bought a remix CD of his back in 2000ish because Underneath The Cream was on it, and it hadn't been officially released yet, and I have to say, the sound quality was absolutely abysmal. Everything about it was unprofessional, from the sound, to the mixing, down to the presentation. I don't know how he kept himself in Prince's good graces after that mess.

I bought it for the same reason. Ended up flogging it on eBay.

He'd have to be a pretty shitty human being to say that and not do it. Being a crappy DJ doesn't make you a crook.

Brother Jules did the original "Remix Experience" back in the day. It's still awesome.

I'm not massively keen on the two new remixes I've heard.

It has to be official because if it wasn't Bro Jules would be celebrating his CD's release at the police station on November 22.

Now why would he challenge WB? IDK. Unless TRE is estate approved and 4ever is part of a contract P has signed before he passed, as had been suggested before, and there's some tension between the estate and WB around it, and Jules is tacitely addressing it, I don't understand what he is doing.

Interesting. I wonder which parts Jules did and which parts are from the original. I know I really dig it but mostly the part with the 90's tracks. I've always found that there shouldn't have been any 80's track mixed in it because it was a different sound and it kind of breaks the flow. I wonder if Jules is responsible for this?

Why would Prince fans support somebody else's music instead of Prince's own music? Even if it's one song, I'd buy an album for just 'Moonbeam Levels', (which everyone knows, is brilliant) opposed to a bunch of somebody else's remixes any day.

I doubt he has licensed the tracks from the estate. And asking people to buy his crap instead of the WB release is just plain wrong.

Thanks, Bart.

For those that don't want to bother to read what I posted, a relevent excerpt:

"Lemme give y'all some history...
When the concept of Princemas started in 1994.. Howie T was the first
to do an actual ALL PRINCE remix tape.. He did 3 and the final was
"The Remix Experience" which ROCKED! It centered around the Gold
Experience LP prior to release... 14 copies were made and distributed
to EACH band member.. Bother (Weak a*s) Jules, Me, Jugghead, Howie,
Prince, and some unnamed folks in our little crowd... We EACH signed
agreements NOT to give the mixes out... So Jules gets an idea.... Lets do a "remix Experience" of our own and
sell it to the fans.. Princemas is HOT and did well so why not..
Well, Howie T was called in for idea's and the ORIGINAL "Remix
Experience" was used without his knowledge! THAT is the GOOD part of
the CD!!!!! The rest (Non Howie T parts) SUCK BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEAK
BORING HORRIFYING MIXES with BAD LEVEL MIXING and TERRIBLE choices of
samples!!!! TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY UNPROFFESIONAL SOUNDING!!!!!

Howie T gets NO PROPS for the work and idea's and Jules name goes on a
HORRIFYING WEAK MIX!!!!!!!!!! Howie is a bit upset he didn't get
credit where it was due since he was told it was ONLY for Jules
PERSONAL pleasure and NOT to be sold for Profit!"

I'd support DJ Foefur's 70-minute remix way before I'd ever support Jules. That mix is fucking amazing. The layering, the thinking behind it - it was a mash-up before we really knew mash-ups on a wider scale, IMO.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
