Greatest Hits will always sell, you can't compare them to studio albums. People who want to buy a Prince compilation will be buying this in the future, it will be a slow seller. 4ever will outsell Hit N Run (Phase One and Two), AOA and PE sooner or later.

The album is not doing well overall, but considering the poor tracklist (always the same songs, only one unreleased track...) just imagine how well it would have done if it was done properly : one unreleased track by disc, post-warner hits ( TMBGITW, GOLD, HOLY RIVER, MUSICOLOGY, BLACKSWEAT...).

WB lost his money on this, this failure was highly predictable. I hope these people who conceived this will be fired.

i would doubt Warners lost money on this.

Don't be so sure.

They lost the opportunity to release a greatest hits covering his entire carreer, which is a huge commercial mistake.

They should have released instead ¨PR deluxe, but it seems they can' and they surely won't.

.

In france, WB spent 500.000 euros in advertising campaign. The results ? 4ever peaked at #46 the first week (!), and for the second week is down to #71 (!!). So around 3000 ex sold for so much money spent is not a good result at all.

How can you claim to know how much Warner spent or earned?

And your suggestion that they can't and won't release PR deluxe is pure speculation.

If they really could re-release PR with an unreleased bonus disc, don't you think they would have it by now ? Why waste the holiday season to release another GH compilation ?

Nonsense. PR Deluxe will likely be released around 21 April 2017, promoted in part by exclusive interviews and features in the likes of Mojo etc.

Yes, let's ignore the facts. Let's ignore that WBR only has the rights to his 1980s and 1990s albums released by them, and not even all of them (seems the post-1992 contract ones are out of bounds). let's ignore that Prince was involved in this compilation, etc.

.

Who knows what the original plans were; wouldn't be surprised if those involved "deleting" TH/TBS, Ultimate and TVBO, plus other promo activity. Wouldn't be surprised if there were negociations WRT getting access to additional tracks (e.g. TMBGITW). But all of that is now on hold, so they had to work with what they did have access to and the rights to.

.

And chances are they had to do something NOW, because there is a danger that the real mess WRT the rights to his music is just about to explode, and in such a case having product in stores is waaaaay more important than making big bucks. Because now they also have "Moonbeam Levels" in their catalogue.

But does anyone know why Prince delivered another compilation that's essentially the same as the others?

.

Did you even bother reading what I wrote? Lemme quote it again:

My thoughts are based on a presumption that the only significant costs in for this are on advertising spend and, in the UK at any rate, I've not been aware of any significant advertising.

Also, I don't think that a greatest hits with post '93 material would be significantly different in terms of track listing or that much more attractive to a casual buyer...

Not sure why anyone is surprised by these results. When he died, both Ultimate and TVBO and charted. Nearly everyone that wanted a Prince compilation bought it already. 4Ever was a pointless release, even with Moonbeam Levels.

They should have put together a live album. Personally, I have the albums from the 80s, and then at least two hits or "best of" CDs. I really don't need all the same music again.

But a live album from his many concerts. Oh, that I would LOVE and I would snatch up in a minute. In fact, there are several live albums I'd buy, even of some of the same songs.

And, yes, I have snatched some from Youtube, but I'd still buy them. I'd LOVE the audio version.

Just my two cents...for any lurkers out there.

If it were to be released on April, we would know the tracklist by february...We are about one !month from February, and still NOTHING has transpired from the project... . Moreover, it would have been a smarter move to re-release Purple rain as soon as possible, like in november instead of 4EVER...And to release his last live around 21 april 2017 (in fact they should have released it the weeks following his death).

appreciate these releases are seen as long term/slow burners BUT the logic beggars belief. Whichever way I look at it the same points resonate i.e.:

1] a rushed release to capitalise on xmas

2] pointless release as majotity of hits are already well catered for on the other vailable compilations

3] strange track listing

4] Moonbeam Levels - did the estate really think think hardcore would rush out to buy this beacuse we dont already have it?!

5] Weak artwork - so much more could have been done to cover the span of time these songs cover

Overall a poor effort & a pointless release IMHO.

To be fair. I went in Hmv yesterday, and it's at no 16 on there shelve and they are prince Cds scattered on different places in the shop, so his presence is strong. The strongest it's been for some time. A couple of years ago, there was only a few of his Cds in one section.

my opinion of the low sales is this:

1. most of the songs, fans already have on other CDs or albums, only they are not enhanced

2. Some people feel WB is trying to make money on him after his death, and avid fans don't want to give them that satisfaction.

And a second week at #21. That's pretty consistent, and you would imagine the sales each week would have to increase to hold position as Christmas approaches. Could see this albums selling decent numbers over a longer period of time.
