Favorite Live songs over their studio versions

I have really been enjoying a lot of Prince's live recordings lately, as apparently many of you are too based on various threads. What are some of Prince's studio songs that you feel that were consistently better in their concert version. Please limit it to 5 or fewer songs. That way more people can add their favorites too without being too repetitive. Feel free to comment on your own selections.

(1) Dirty Mind - This was a studio nugget that was even greater when he featured long versions of it in concert during the 80s. LOVED the City Nights version.

(2) Muse 2 the Pharaoh - Like much of the TRC, this was much better live than the studio version.

(3) How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore - This is such a fun song in concert. He seems to really enjoy the audience participation in this. In the final Atlanta concert, it brought the house down.

(4) Joy of Repetition - Great on record but extra special live.

(5) Purple Rain - I know this might seem too cliche, but it is remarkable that he could always make the song soar every concert (at least the ones I've heard), and would always do something at least slightly unique each time he played it.

There are so many more but that's where U come in.

well... Purple Rain was alway the live arrangement and energized version! I like the live energy of Hot Thing more than the studio version.

But Housequake (while the live dancing and vocals are great) is better for me as a studio track. Same with SOTT. Or Ballad of Dorothy Parker.

I like Play in the Sunshine live much better.

I agree.ALL the tracks on SOTT album sound better live especially "sign of the times" and "strange relationship"

Great idea for a thread! I am gettting more into the live stuff lately, and would love some direction. (especially if people could reference the concert(s) that their favorite versions come from)...

------------------------

I really love "When I Lay My Hands On U" from Montreux 2009 (Show 2)...of course the whole show was amazing...but this version is incredible! Also, Noon Rendevous from the Birthday Soundboard show...I know the studio version was Sheila's, but this version, to me, is far superior...and maybe one of my favorite tracks ever!!

"Fury" was the very first thing I thought of. Also, "Joy in Repetition" from the ONA box set.

"Girls and Boys" on SOTT tour.

"Strange Relationship" from 4 Those Of U On Valium boot.

"Little Red Corvette" from North Sea or some festival where he chants "slow down!"

"Anotherloverholenyohead" - Hit N Run Tour 1986

"Purple Rain" - Brit awards with Sheila, Wendy, & Lisa

"A Case of U" - First Avenue 1983

"Endorphinmachine" - Nulle Part Ailleurs appearance

...off the top of my head.

Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) Manchester stand out, he makes the audience chant "must be something in the water they drink" & Louiville's guitar is awesome!
Forever In My Life (SOTT live)
If I Was Your Girlfriend (P&M is my current favorite but there are others)
The Cross (there are several)
Noon Rendezvous (P&M)
Head (Parade tour but there are others like Dirty Mind tour which is grittier)

My list is endless. I'll never forget Prince's interview on MTV in '85 when they asked him about Parade and he said it was funky, even funkier live. That holds true for most of his songs.

Okay I know we only have the sparse demo version but Roadhouse Garden from the birthday show is so many miles better than its studio counterpart.

I think you misunderstood, I like some tracks live like Hot Thing and Play in the Sunshine, but I like other tracks on the record like Sign O' the Times, Housequake, Ballad of Dorothy Parker.

Strange Relationship is better live, I agree with that.

I wouldn't necessarily say it was better as the studio version is amazing in itself, but the live version of Pop life from Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas is absolutely addictive. I play it over and over...

Mostly the ones I saw in concert before the albums were released: The Question of U, Damn U, Sexy MF... After hearing them live, the album versions were disappointing.
But, almost every Prince song was better on stage than on record.

The Love We Make sounds better onstage than the album imo.

Especially the Montreux 2013 on keyboard version and the Montreux 2011 on guitar, both out of this world performances.
