Proposals are invited for a two-day international conference on the life and legacy of Prince.

This conference aims to provide fresh perspectives on the creative and commercial dimensions of Prince’s career, re-examining the meanings of his work in the context of his unexpected death.

It seeks to address the issue of Prince’s significant influence and lasting appeal from a number of multi-disciplinary perspectives. We welcome proposals from scholars in the fields of popular music studies, sound studies, gender studies, cultural studies, television studies, celebrity studies, film studies, visual arts, performance studies, digital and social media and related disciplines.

The conference presents a timely consideration of the cultural impact, iconic status of Prince and his global legacies across many media platforms. It will examine all aspects of his creative output and the ways in which it intersects with video, performance, literature, theatre, film, digital cultures, design and fashion.

Single and panel proposals are invited on, but are not limited to, the following:

Prince as musician.
Prince as songwriter.
Prince and fandom.
Prince and racial representations.
Prince, feminism and gender relations.
Prince on film.
Prince as actor.
Prince and performance style.
Prince’s music videos.

Thoughts guys? I'll probably head down to that. It sounds pretty interesting.

Think I might write a proposal for this, I did spend the last 3 years at University studying Illustration and spent the majority of that time drawing Prince, harassing tutors who have seen Prince and submitting coursework that subtly hinted to P in one way or another. AND I'm in the area! My time to shine has come I kid.

I'm not far either - count me in! Not sure I'm up for submitting a proposal - but I would love to attend! How do we sign up?

Are any orgers here that are scholars that would be interested in presenting for this? I wish I could but I think you have to be like a University lecturer type-level to even think about submitting a proposal for this, I'm nowhere near qualified and would probably be out of my depth anyway. Because I fear that this may turn into just a bunch of intelectuals who don't actually reeeally know THAT much about Prince waffling on about stuff they don't really know that much about? Sorry, my scorn for certain areas of academia is showing.

So it would be great if you know -actual- fans were involved in giving talks about the man himself rather than pompous tutors.

Name one thing that's Original and has FUNK/Soul in it in Salford Please...

But I am renown in certain circles here, for being an Anglo-Phile when it comes to Post-Punk British bands of the 80s and 90s.

Aren't New Order/Joy Division from Salford? Blue Monday was pretty funky. So much so, that it inspired Afrika Bambaataa's only hit.

What about Shaun Ryder from Happy Mondays — of Step On fame? That track had significant MTV rotation in the States.

I'd love to do it, especially the gender / feminist aspect (that's probably the closest to my own area of study) but, truly, I wouldn't feel confident enough in my Prince knowledge to submit a proposal - mainly because I KNOW there would be die-hards like you in the audience, so the Q&A sessions at the end would be terrifying!

For once can Toure not be on a Panel about Prince. I would love to see other people offer their takes about Prince that is actually knowledgable and not presumptive.

Registration probably won't be up until February or March - once the selections have been made from the submitted proposals. Keep your eye on the link included above.

And for those not familiar with academic conferences of this type, it will be 20-minute papers, most likely read verbatim (in order to keep on schedule). The quality will be much higher than Touré's "I took a course in cultural theory as an undergrad, and I'll be flogging that horse for the rest of my life" panel presentations. For sure. Some presenters will be fans, others won't.

Yeah, I'd really like to talk about his album art and stuff but I honestly don't know what I'd say really. I'd probably have to do it in collaboration with someone else, more qualified/older, but I'd love to.

Not sure what you're actually getting at, but as an actual person living in the Greater Manchester area, take it from me- our music scene is still very alive and thriving. Do not try to discredit my city's musical history because we've been more influential than you probably know of.

Manchester is not known for funk or soul specifically, so I honestly don't get your point for targeting that genre specifically. But it DOES have a musical history that prevails and influences to this day. As for being original, Tony Wilson put that one best- 'This is Manchester. We do things differently here'.

Honestly I don't get what you even have against Manchester. Have you even ever been? You seem to have us all down as football yob twats. Please, do me a favour and spend one day up here and you'll see its not like that.

Prince had to go to Cali to record his first album, fair enough. But that doesn't mean he didn't reap from those benefits of attaining a record deal and becoming known and brought his business initiative back home to Minnie. The man built his own empire and brought musicians from all over to record and create work there.

If I'm honest you just sound like a butthurt southern fairy who's angry the North is hosting something like this first instead of London.

This will be a fest of pretentious discourse on Prince.
