Number 1 Prince song...

One of the hardest things you can ask a Prince diehard to do; is pick a top 5 or a favorite song of all time. Through the decades (though I don't have a list per se), I've always had a favorite Prince song consistently and it hasn't wavered. Pink Cashmere...my number 1, my all time favorite.

  • The classic swooning of a beautiful woman, from an era of pushing past genre lines.
  • Claire Fischer string accompany, their relationship with communicating with each other effortlessly and never actually meeting,
  • the guitar solo, the question and response feel during the solo,
  • the Mile Davis-esque trumpeting.

I could go on forever about this song. Not the most well known song, so when people ask me that question... "...what's your favorite?" it gives me an opportunity to play the song for them. They pretty much look at me like I'm nuts, but that's okay...used to it.

As I, like many of you, were plunged knee deep into grief this year, I latched onto his more recent work. Blown away by the cryptic messaging of Prince seemingly predicting his own passing. Hit N Run Phase 2 has not moved from my rotation as of yet in 2016. Great album! Despite your usual critics, it's easily one of my favs amongst the entire catalog. He made some gems of songs 2014-2016. No other song stopped me in my tracks as much as Groovey Potential did.

  • The opening piano riff, nothing special, but then the finger snaps and kick bass ='d "groovey."

Headphones on, cutting my lawn, I stopped where I stood mower still running.

  • The stoccato horns,
  • the vocal effects,
  • the passion in the singing,
  • the arrangement,
  • the concert feel.

You can see the light in your head as the song plays. This song has officially taken the number 1 spot, though not at first...it literally grabbed my musical psyche and demanded that it be my fav.

Thanks for reading. For the past 15 years, the Org has been the only place I would post something like this. No one else understands. Lol

But just being totally honest, you lost me like hell on the rest of your post. shrug lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Mountains from Parade.

The PERFECT Prince song.

Wonderful, super catchy melody.
Quirky arrangement.
The Revolution in full effect.
Prince at the height of his powers.

I actually took a few fresh listens to Pink
Cashmere this week. You're right - great song. And timeless.

Beautiful written, thank you so much. Mine would be If I Was Your Girlfriend and When Doves Cry. The loneliness, desperation and frustration in the first and the other well... it's more complicated for me to explain.

The 12" versions of Mountains and Let's Go Crazy cannot be topped. If I had to pick just one, it's the former. To me, the extended Mountains track sounds like a progression of all the jamming Prince had done before. Songs like America, Love Bizzare, DMSR lead up to the perfection of Mountains.

Adorecream

Adore is my one, fighting with Electric Intercourse, but I only heard it for the first time in 2012, whereas I heard Adore when the Hits/Bsides came out and it was love at first listen (I only became a fan in 91 and delved into the back catalogue 2 years later). Also when Prince played it live in Auckland and looked at me, that cemented Adore in my mind forever.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Well put. Pink Cashmere is pure brilliance. The sheer imagery of a man producing a beautiful piece of pink cashmere to represent those powerful feelings at the beginning of a "love cycle"...so sensual. The guitar, string arrangement and vocals perfectly present the same feeling.

This is truly hard because it's difficult not to revert back to nostalgia and pick the first song that cemented your fandom of Prince. For me it was When Doves Cry, but man... there has been a lot of songs since then that has given that song a run for its money. Here, Space, Wonderful Ass, Continental, She's always in My a Hair, Baltimore... Just to name a few. wink And I can keep going and going. His songs are so addicting and actually overwhelming at times with the share quantity of such quality songs. Half the times I don't even know where to begin...

Groovy Potential really grabbed me, too. I'm not sure what my all time favorite is, but Groovy Potential is definitely up there.

Pink Cashmere is in my top five, if not number one among my Prince favorites. I too like the strings and orchestral sound. I often play it repeatedly on long car trips, hoping to notice something new in it I have not noticed before (even after all these years) I hit rewind a lot near the end to hear the last minute or so. This song just makes me feel so good.

Tattoo-less and proud...
