Award Shows LIke AMA---Pretty Empty Witout Prince Watching the AMAs the other night was yet another biting reminder that Prince is indeed gone. Looking at the performers in the room, what the event lacked was a presence of figurative and literal royalty. There are no STARS any more, not just in music but in Hollywood either. There are famous people, there are celebrities, but Prince over the last 10 years or longer had transcended to something else. He was the guy that celebrities were startstuck by. He was the guy who in perpetuity was going to get a standing O at anything he decided to grace with his presence. When he presented any type of award in most cases the winner was more shocked to be getting an award from him than actually winning the dang award. The Weeknd looked like he was peeing his pants at last year's AMAs. Gotye was much more awed by Prince liking their song than by actually winning a Grammy. Prince had become the 80s Oscars Jack Nicholson of any and all Award shows and him being there somehow gave the shows legitimacy. Of all the things I miss about P this is way up the list, the five minute cameos he made where, after thunderous applause, he would say a quiet, humble few words, smile or do the Prince smirk, announce the winnner, and then he was out, pretty much sucking the life out of the remainder of the show.
