Prince songs that sound like other Prince songs!

So I'm driving around today listening to my Prince bootlegs on random. Wondering which ones will be get to see released now he's gone.

'Poor Little Bastard' comes on and I realised how much it sounds like 'Damn U' and 'Sweet Baby'.

He clearly came back to it and took the melody and came up with those released songs.

There's a scream on 'Eggplant' that's very like a part of 'It'

Hopefully we'll get to hear all the times he "borrowed from himself"

Can you think of any more examples?

Would you prefer if the similar sounding songs stayed in The Vault?

1) Musicology - I No (Especially the horns at the end) + The Work

2) Extraloveable - became Baby I'm A Star (with a few changes in the lead-line)

3) D.M.S.R. = The Walk (Influenced by "Get on The Good Foot" in my opinion.

[***"Jamie Starr is a thief!!!"***]

4) Lovesexy - 1999

5) Dance 4 Me - Lady Cab Driver

6) Housequake - Shocadelica

7) U Got The Look - Kiss (Ramped up..Even The backing guitar riff is nearly the same at the beginning of UGTL).

8) It - Superfunkacalifragisexy (Probably worked on those around the same dates)

9) Telepathy - Positivity + Sign O' The Times... (Recorded during hi most prolific period)

10) Koo - Koo ---Sing O' The Times (elements o f the lyrics, and verse breakdowns)

I like a lot of the tracks with similar sounding drums. Some of the ones I mean:

Delirious
Something In The Water
Private Joy
Little Red Corvette

Are there any more that I may have missed, particularly unreleased ones? I've heard all of his 80s albums that were released.

The lead line of "Rave" is used in "The Max".

But, "Toy Box" = "Blue Limousine" = "17 Days".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

My name is Prince samples "I wanna be your lover". It's also been said that "Shut it down" borrows some of the drums from MNIP.

Emancipation references a lyric from Purple Rain. The live version sampled the chorus from "We March".

Xpedition contains a short nod to Batdance.

The segues on TGE give some insight to songs Prince thought went well together. Irrisistable Bitch, Housequake, SexyMF, Now.

"2Morrow" borrows from the Mustang mix. The latter was also apparently updated in 1996.

It actually samples 3 songs. You hear "I wanna be your lover", "Partyup", "Controversy", and then "Prince" on every other line.

Not that it makes MNIP sound like another song.

The lead line of Rave is Duke Ellington´s Caravan.

I read your Toy Box= Blue Limousine=17 Days comparison on that other thread but...I just don´t hear the similarities.

What exactly do you find similiar in those songs?

By the way, Alexander O´Neal´s A Broken Heart Can Mend (by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) sounds a lot like 17 Days...not the whole song but the last 30 seconds or so.

Listen to it and you´ll see what I mean.

I think I've heard the "Caravan" thing before, recently. It was also noted that it sounded like "Days of Wild". I've not personally done any comparison on any of those tracks.

As far as the other songs, the hooks are pretty much the same. The "ah ah ah ah ah" hook in "17 Days" leading into the chorus (or the first line of the chorus) is the same as the tinker keyboard sound on "Toy Box", albeit with one note difference. "Blue Limousine" is the same, minus one note at the beginning. It's not the melodies, it's the main hook of the song. "Blue Limousine" uses the hook as the melody in the chorus, mostly. "Toy Box" does too a bit for the melody of the chorus & verse, and the similarity is more noticeable than B.L., but only a bit.

To add to the thread, there are a few songs that stay in the same chord (relative to itself) for the majority of the song. "America". "Hello". "Sexy Dancer". "Mountains". they're all basically one-chord songs, albeit they have a variance here or there going back into the downbeat after 4 or 8 measures.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Opening beat to One of Us and 1999 Septimo, Motherless Child are the same. Also the acoustic strums that intro Peach are the same as Rock & Roll Love Affair... I think? That one's driving me nuts. I know I heard it. Gotta find it again.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

^ The "One of Us"/"Motherless Child" loop goes back further to Prince's version of "Love Thy Will Be Done".

The drums from "Slave" are also heard on Mayte's "Ain't No Place Like You" (or vice versa).

The guitar feedback sounds on "Orgasm" are taken from the end of "Private Joy"

A bit off topic but years ago we had a similar thread and I remember that some orgers posted that Mtume complained that Prince´s She´s Always In My Hair sounded a lot like some Mtume song.

But despite several orgers asking the same question nobody was able to name the Mtume song in question.

Does anyone here remember that Mtume song? Because I simply can´t believe that Mtume did a song that sounds even remotely like She´s Always In My Hair.

I bet it was a different song.

.

Back to the topic...

Back when Thieves in the Temple came out many people compared it to When Doves Cry.

I don´t really hear the resemblance. Maybe the synth parts?

-

Computer Blue sounds like it was partly inspired by the Ohio Players´ What the Hell. Not that it´s a rip off , because Computer Blue is a drastically different song, but there is a part in both songs that sounds similar. Listen to What the Hell and you´ll know what I mean.

The Max from the prince album has a piano break that sounds a lot like the live piano on Face Down. The Max also has the lead line from RaveITJF played on the spacey sounding synths.

"I Want to melt with you" has a sample from "Scarlet Pussy" & "7". - also has a short guitar solo that sounds like it could be from (or a reference to) "The Undertaker".

The intro beat of Compassion sounds similar to Let's Pretend We're Married.

so did Prince...he actually called Journey before releasing Purple Rain, and showed them the song, because he was concerned about the legal ramifications, due to the chord changes in PR being so similiar to Faithfully...the cats from Journey were flattered by the call, and gave P their blessings...
