VANITY's Kind Words aout Prince

delirious4prince:

As a lover, Prince is the best. I’ve spoken to many women who have been to bed with him and they all say the same thing. Prince is something different, something special. He’s uninhibited and wild, in and out of bed, but he can also be tender. Love to him is pure instinct and he’s got the most amazing inner confidence.

During our time together, we became so close it was frightening. It was a deep, intense relationship and sometimes a love-hate one. I often hated the fact that I loved Prince so much. He can get away with the craziest, most bizarre things that other people wouldn’t dream of doing.

One night, for instance, we were at a James Brown concert when Prince suddenly climbed onto his bodyguard’s back and rode onto the middle of the stage knocking over some equipment and singing at the top of his voice. With him it’s always ‘here I am and there I go.’, while everyone else sits back and watches in stunned amazement.

Another time we went to an awards ceremony in Los Angeles. On the way there we drank a bottle of champagne in the back of the car and got very merry. When we arrived, we staggered up this sweeping staircase, hanging on to each other, then rolled all the way down in front of all the well behaved superstars.

I wanted Prince all to myself and he’s not the sort of guy you can hold on to. When it comes down to it, I’m basically an old-fashioned girl who believes in fidelity and trust. I didn’t need other men. I wanted only Prince, and for him to want only me. One day I found out he was seeing other women while we were together and I confronted him with it.

I screamed and cried and pleaded, but it didn’t do any good. So I left Minneapolis without telling anyone where I was going. I still loved Prince, but I knew that our relationship was over. I suffered, but it was the only way, there was nothing else I could do.

It’s difficult for me to watch Prince on the screen. I can’t bear to go and see Purple Rain because I know I’ll break down in tears. I saw the video for When Doves Cry and I just bawled. I still adore him and I don’t think I’ll ever get over him. Not only because he’s so special, but also because I see him everywhere on posters and television all around the world. I’ve had no contact with Prince since we split up.

I’ve had plenty of lovers over the last two years, but none of them have meant anything special to me. They were all casual affairs. I’m finding it hard to meet anyone who can live up to Prince.

-Vanity, New Straits Times (June 13, 1985)

Aww!Thanks for that!!! I think alot of people on here have been looking for examples of him just being a normal human being and examples of just that...how love was an "instinct" to him. Lovely piece, thanks for sharing!

Have a very purple, funky day biggrin

Reading this makes me sad. Seeing how their lives unfolded, seemed they were made for each other, but, oh well... sad

Wow I have never seen this before! What beautiful words about Prince. I think she captured much of him very well in this.

I also can't not admit that reading her words about him in bed gave me quite the thrill. Lol excited

Sighs... If only they had lasted a bit longer. A lot of people didn't even know about her before Prince passed. I saw her in The Last Dragon but had no idea that she was Prince's ex. They looked like a cute and very sexy couple in those photos of them together. smile

Her words may have been kind, but in reality, Prince was a cheater, and from what I read, appears he caused her a lot of heartache and pain. Sorry if that's not what some of you may want to hear, but I'm just being honest.

I have a feeling Mayte Garcia's words about Prince will be very similar. She still holds a torch for him. For those giving Mayte a hard time about writing the book about she and Prince, let me remind those that Sheila E wrote a section on Prince, Vanity wrote a book and Elvis 's wife, Priscilla wrote a book called "Elvis and Me" about Elvis. Can't wait for Mayte's book. Glad I found it and enjoyed it.

No need to apologize. Prince was a serial cheater. Don't think anyone would challenge that notion. I don't think it was his nature to be monogamous. He may have wanted it, but he needed to be free in all areas of his life to explore/experiment for his music, the most important thing to him.

I think Denise, Jill and Mayte are the women who loved and worshipped this man the most. Just my opinion, of course, but from their words over the years, (I know JJ ragged him a few times, but hurt will do that to you), but I believe she was truly in love with him too. No question about Mayte and Denise. He was and will always be the love of their lives, imo.

Do you think Prince still loved Vanity? It's strange that they died within two months of each other and they were both 57. I've often thought that he died of a broken heart.

-- Yes, this true but according to her brother in law they continued to write to each other until a few years therefore, she must have forgiven him.

It's wonderful to read more about how Prince was and this is somewhat how I've come to imagine him.
However is there any confirmation that these are truly Vanity's words? I looked for the article online but could only come up the website attached to the top-post. I feel it's probably her speaking, but I question it just a little bit for two reasons:
1) was Vanity really that vulnerable, especially in 1985?
1) Prince knocked over the equipment at the James brown concert on his way off stage, not to the stage. Ive seen the video. Maybe she just said it in a bit of a different way?

Either way, keep 'em coming...I love to read these on-depth views of Prince.

Sometimes I feel Prince was lonely then other times I feel he had so much confidence that he wasn't afraid to go home with his Creator, hence songs like "Way Back Home". Hard to know what was in this very special man's mind. Just glad he loved his life to the fullest while he was here.

Interesting and touching. And places a more personal element on her departure than the sometimes mentioned idea that she was mainly ticked about money. Thanks for sharing it.

I know this is a small part of the whole thing, and not the important part--but is she talking about the infamous Prince/Michael/James all on the same stage moment? It's the only time I've ever heard of him being on stage with Brown, and there is the reference to knocking over equipment, even though at least when he was on stage there wasn't any singing (at least in the video). Or is this another time (and he still managed to knock stuff over again)? If it's the triumvirate one--hmmm. "Stunned" I can understand, maybe even embarrassed "amusement"--but "amazement?"

And now, I find myself compelled to deny that the incident ever occurred, since that's what I've always done in the past. Old jokes are hard to give up.

They were the IT couple back then. At least in my community. It was wildly reported that Vanity (Prince's real girlfriend) was going to play his love interest in Purple Rain. It was also hinted that the story was about their lives. I still remember when I heard Vanity wasn't going to be in Purple Rain anymore. I was sooooo disappointed. Reason number one that I (unfairly) never took to Appolonia, lol.

Now see I don't see it the same way.

I think P was simply young and just making money and with a buffet of women more than happy to sleep with him, some who really liked him and some who merely saw him as a means to an end.
I think that some of them misinterpreted his sleeping with them as a "committed relationship" and when he moved on or was with multiple people at the same time their feelings were hurt because they WANTED to be exclusive.

I don't think HE thought he was exclusive with them, except the wives.

the infamous James Brown concert where MJ and Prince appeared onstage was in September 1983.By that time,Vanity was gone from the Prince camp,so she must be referring to an earlier JB performance that year.

I agree with you, but I bet he wanted them to be exclusive to him. At least some of them. I know he did with Vanity. I've read that she said he was very possessive where she was concerned. That can get a little tricky with the mind.

Was is September or end of August (20th?). I can't imagine it happening twice.

It was very sweet of Denise/Vanity - but I can't imagine she was very sober that night. It wouldn't be quite like seeing it in the cold light of day/tape.
