Rank Prince's Movies? What's your favorite, 2nd favorite, etc?
1. Purple Rain, I loved it when it came out, then kind-of dismissed it, but have the found the glory again in the new Blu-ray.
2. Sign O The Times - rewatchable. rewatchable.
3. Under the Cherry Moon - for a long time probably would consider it my favorite, but just don't feel the same. However, great music, beautiful to look at, amusing and some great stuff.
4. Grafitti Bridge - the Plan 9 of Prince.

1 Under the Cherry Moon-my favorite of his films.(and my favorite album) This movie is beautiful and the music was like nothing else on the radio in 86.As a fan this movie was fun to see a young prince show the lighter side of himself. Also directed by him and as a debut is a sophisticate and timeless visual piece of art from prince. 2.Purple Rain-The music, the sex scene,First Avenue,Minneapolis,The motorcycle,The Flowers and lace.84 was Prince's year. From the classic dialogue to the clothes. For me as a fan this movie is a snapshot of where Prince was in his career and where he was about to take us. 3.SOTT-For me this concert is like watching the album cover come to life.Enjoyed the look and sound of Prince in his hippie phase.I love the little bits in between the music. He performs most of the album with the exception of a few.Would have loved to see this expanded to the intended CB/GB project as a concert. 4.Graffiti Bridge-As the sequel to Purple Rain it just seemed like an up to date remake of the original with an angel thrown in,and a couple of famous faces. For me GB has always been about the few songs prince had on the compilation, and watching Prince reunite with his closest friends and where he was at in 1990.

As far as I'm concerned, Prince never really translated well to film, although Purple Rain got close. If it had been a movie about him recording music and performing it, with a little bit about his world, it might have been my absolute favourite. Just imagine a good documentary about this phenomenom primed for stardom... But... since we have to talk about what we have been given in movies, here's my list and take on the movies. . 1- Under The Cherry Moon: great styling, great music. The humour is mostly juvenile and there isn't much of a story. Acting is very tongue in cheek, although some professional actors actually act. When viewed as an exercise in style, this movie is quite enjoyable and has many small skits that can be viewed separately. Skip over the Girls&Boys segment and you don't even have to cringe much! . 2- Purple Rain: great energy and sense of urgency. Unfortunately, the "humour" is quite offensive and sexist. Acting is not tongue in cheek, but simply bad. The story is slightly better than UTCM though. The music, while not as good Under The Cherry Moon, ultimately saves this movie. It gives a nice insight into Prince's world. When forewarned about the sexism, it is mostly an enjoyable ride. . 3- Sign Of The Times: I want to like it. I went to 5 of the concerts, including one of the two shows that was filmed for this film. Unfortunately, most of this film is re-shot, lip-synced and without energy. To make matters worse, incomprehensible vignettes are put between songs, taking what little energy there was out of it and it looks plastic and simply bad. To insult to injury, a grainy video shooting of U Got The Look is added in, which is not live, looks out of place, and isn't a very good song imo. To get a feel for SOTT live shows, get a soundboard bootleg, or even a good audience recording. It'll be a much better experience. If an official live recording is required, the Lovesexy Dortmund concert, while a tour that wasn't nearly as good, blows this movie out of the water. The Purple Rain Syracuse concert is not as good as the Lovesexy one, but still much better than the SOTT movie. . 4- Grafitti Bridge: What to say... there are a few good songs here, but they are mostly ruined by the plastic setting, wooden acting and a screenplay that should never have been approved. The acting is following a straight line through Purple Rain and Sign Of The Times, downward. I still don't know what the storyline is supposed to be, as I've never been able to keep my mind focused enough throughout this atrocity. Avoid at all costs.
