Will Black is the New Black album be released from the vault? I know we have all heard about the 'Prince4ever' and Purple Rain remaster but what about Black is the New Black? I read somewhere that this was P's latest project he had planned to be released. I'm really anticipating the release of this album since I'll only be buying the Purple Rain remaster... Seconded. This, seemingly a small matter, is the way that myths get started which ultimately result in the kind of frothing here and on the wider interwebs about which we end up getting a (very justified and well said) tweet from Londell about 'homework'.
I've just done homework on this supposed tweet and it doesn't appear to exist.
It's time to tighten up on the factual basis of expectations before we end up with acres of text sounding out that 'we've been deceived'. Oh wait...might be a little late on that
Still worth doing and I'm backing luv4u on this and the general idea of putting up evidence rather than just 'exercising free speech' in the form of rants. If free speech is to be about bullshit and faux outrage then it's no wonder that in some quarters, people are agreeable to letting free speech be curtailed. Personal responsibility is sooooo out of fashion right now but it's gotta come back.

According to MonoNeon... http://bassmusicianmagazi...-mononeon/[...] During that time (late 2015/early 2016) I started recording with him. We recorded an album before he kicked off his Piano and a Microphone tour – it was me on bass, Prince on guitar/keyboards/producer, Kirk Johnson on drums and Adrian Crutchfield on sax/EWI. Prince said he was going to release the album and name it, “Black Is The New Black”. During the sessions Prince would bring in an idea, we would build on it, JAM… and record it! If I remember correctly, we recorded about 7 tunes – or maybe more. The only song that was put out from the project was “Ruff Enuff”, which was released January 2016 on TIDAL under the moniker “MONO NEON” (Prince asked to use my name only for the TIDAL release). I’m not sure if the album was finished, but hopefully the material will get heard in the near future. [...] |

Also from the same article, Mono says this clip from Prince's instagram is another song from the album...

The last few times I remember seeing Prince was at Paisley early 2016. I was there for a photo shoot with Kirk Johnson and Adrian Crutchfield. Kirk said, “Prince wants you to come to Studio A”. When I got back there, Prince was playing a track from the album that we recorded; it was just me and him in the control room. He handed me his guitar and asked me to play along with the track to see how it sounded. After I played I gave the guitar back to him – he smiled, and said I will see you in a minute. My final time with Prince was in February for a late night studio session – (listen here)

Listen to Dr funkenberry podcasts. He talks about it on there. About 3 podcasts back! And talks about a proposed EP Prince was going to release on tidal with either RufEnuff on it or FreeUrself, can't remember which one. The guy who posted isn't making it up. Surprised not more on here heard it. Try looking them up. |

Ye Dr Funk said there was going to be an 8 track EP with Ruff Enuff on Tidal. Whether he knew this as a fact or was just going from MonoNeon's quotes who knows |

I want to see these kind of projects released, but think the only hope for them, unless they're already delivered to Tidal, is the establishment of some kind of premium service for hardcore fans.
I think most major record companies will only be interested in monetising the 80s material with the Revolution. |

It sounds to me like there wasn't an album, per se, but an album's worth of material that could potentially become an album, and a proposed title.
I doubt whether serious time and thought had yet been put in to compiling a tracklist, sequencing the tracks, figuring out the theme, thinking about artwork, etc. I doubt whether anything beyond "Ruff Enuff" had been fully mixed or edited.
Remember, Prince also tweeted that "Ruff Enuff" might end up on the same album as "Free Urself" - so, like all things P, all of this was subject to change and likely songs would have been placed on different configurations of different projects etc etc etc.

Prince and MonoNeon had recorded basic tracks for an album, with no release date set. Prince was producing, playing guitar, and keys. The band also features drummer Kirk Johnson and Adrian Crutchfield on sax and electric woodwinds. They released one song on Tidal called “Ruff Enuff.” No news has been given as to what the album’s fate will be.

Jeez, Laura - are your reading comprension skills really that poor? Again, nothing there says an album was finished, "basic tracks" strongly suggests otherwise. We have no way to know what the release Tidal was expecting was - it might well have been BITNB, but if wasn't complete that's unlikely.
And there's nothing at that link about BITNB. |

Yes 'subject to change' is the usual key phrase as P himself tweeted conflicting info. . One said something about Ruff Enuff being the sister track to Free Urself, another said Free Urself was on Phase 3 and another said there was no plans for Phase 3. . And then Ruff Enuff was Tidal's PPOW, under the moniker of MonoNeon, as an instrumental then a few hours later replaced with the Adrian Crutchfield vocoder vocal version. |

Dr F is not a reliable source. I don't doubt Tidal's injunction at all - I just think it's a pretty big leap to assume that the project in question was BITNB.

Why would it be a leap. Tidal believes they have the rights to stream an unreleased project. We know Black Is The New Black is an ureleashed project. It could be the one Tidal is waiting for. This is plausible.
The rest of my post is true and verifiable. Because you did not see the link of the artwork or believe anything that Dr. Funk states is true is that is your problem. After all people who actually worked for Prince are on his podcast speaking about projects that they worked on but it must be all made up because you and others on this board don't like Dr. Funk.
You need to grow the fuck up and try paying attention to what is going on. |

Don't worry I saw the tweet as well. Some people on this board would not believe you if the tweet fell from the sky and hit them in the head. They could have the CD of the project in their hand and will argue until they die. ( Well Prince did not really want this to come out and he may not even being playing on it. ) It is always going to be something stupid.
They refuse to listen to what the associates or saying because they know more then anyone else. |
