The song Controversy-a reflection

Reflecting back on the album Controversy and specifically the title track I used to smile to myself as a young fan in my teens who witnessed the reaction Prince and his whole image got out of people. prince was ahead of the game mentally and musically in so many ways. The song Controversy is just about that nothing more.(where the publics perception was of him at the time) it is not really vulgar or sexual. Even the "people call me rude" part of the song is really a harmless sentiment. The Lord's prayer section raised the most eyebrows and caused him the most criticism. Being able to experience most of his career myself and seeing how sincere Prince actually was about his spirituality does anyone think Prince knew mixing his love for God and his secular views would create the publicity to take his talents and music to the superstar status it did?

I dont think his Love for God and his sincere questioning of himself his carnal desires and where they sat in respect to the big picture was in any way a calculated move .

I see that he was doing the kind of introspection that a lot of us could be better of by doing...

He was a Christian in the entertaiment industry. I think he struggled with this issues the whole of his life.

Maybe not contrived but may have been to make us look at ourselves and what is acceptable and what's not.

Prince was basically stating everything the press was saying about him at the time and him knowing half of what they were questioning was something he made up himself. He knew how to become a star and to create a song which at the time was controversial in itself was genius.Prince was basically asking why people wanted know some of things about him in the first place when actually all that mattered was the music. Adding the Lord's prayer to Controversy was always seen as blasphemy of some sorts because of Prince's image on and off stage but I think he wanted people to question why they were upset in the first place
