1975 vintage Prince If u see me aka Do yourself a favor predates back to 75 and was written by Pepe Willie with Prince's input so much of the early Minneapolis sound is already there when I listen to it.It's said that Prince recorded his own version from his memory some 7 years later. Would it be safe to say that Pepe kinda helped to create the sound Prince would take over the world with 3 years later?

If You See Me and Do Yourself A Favour are like night and day to me. Pepe's original is bland. Prince's remake is on fire. I think it's telling that the earlier 94 East recordings with Prince as a session guitarist are pretty dull, while the later recordings with Prince (and Andre) all over them are much more entertaining. I really don't think Pepe had much to do with Prince's success. It's more like Prince gave Pepe a nice way to make some cash over the years.

As a certified Prince fanatic like most of us As talented as Prince was as a teenager we quickly dismiss people like Pepe who were around him that had connections and actually put him in the studio on this recording Pepe's name should be noted for at least that it gave Prince the further exposure to meet the right people to eventually being signed by Warner.Even though the Pepe version is "dull" prince didn't write it. Sure Pepe enjoyed the royalties through the years he would have been a fool not to elements of that sound is in later prince songs. Prince obviously had to see something in the song to sit and by memory rerecorded it. [Edited 11/6/16 6:26am] "love's the only drug we do in here"-Prince

You're absolutely right. I'm sure Pepe had some role in getting Prince on the path to recording in a studio. He should also be given credit for coming up with If You See Me. He has my respect. I also have no doubt that Prince would have still broken through without Pepe. And I haven't seen any evidence that Pepe had any notable musical influence over Prince.
