12" of prince

In the 80's the 12" versions of Prince's singles were sought out just like the album releases. With "Let's work" being his first extended release what was the last single to be(not remixed)but extended? Any one favorite from the 12" releases? (My favorite is feel u up long stroke)

I swear we just talked about this recently.

For me, anything up to the Batman era is golden.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Probably "Dance 4 Me" from MPLSound, in 2009.

My favorite extended versions are 'Mountains', 'Let's Go Crazy', 'U Got The Look (Long Look)' and 'Raspberry Beret'.
From a lot of singles there was an extended version, depending on the length of the original album version.
Songs like 'I Could Never Take' were edited down on 7" and the 12" was the original album version with the slow jam in the middle of the song. Remixes were countless, mainly from D&P on. Not all of them equally desirable, but that's a matter of taste.
The extended versions in the eighties were imo the best. Another golden 12" was 'I Wish U Heaven (pt 1, 2 & 3).

The 12" was already around in the disco era but when Prince came along he turned it into something special. It was an event for me to hear more of a song I loved. It was like getting more of a already good thing. From Raspberry Beret to Kiss to the Heaven 12" giving us more made his music that much more exciting.

Yeah, there's a "Disco Mix" on the 12". I can't recall if it's much different from the album version, I've not heard it for a while.

Sexy Dancer is the first 12" to get a proper extended version.

I've always been very fond of the 21:46 12" version of America.

I've always thought ATWIAD the track would have been cool getting a extended version like America did.

The unreleased version of "Around The World In A Day" would have made a great 12" version.

The Disco Mixes of "Just As Long As We're Together" and "Soft And Wet" by Jim Burgess on the promo 12" aren't radically different from the album versions (the "Just As Long As We're Together" remix actually sounds slower to me), but you can hear the differences. Like you say, they just aren't extended in any way.

Yes I think it was 1977/78 that Warners was really breaking out the extended 12 inch disco mix single. I think they were motivated by the full length version of "Love to Love you Baby" which was released on her album in late 1975 as a whole album side as dancers wanted more of this song than the 4 minute single, so Donna was pushed back into the studio for 13 more minutes of singing and moaning along to organs and violins. The result was orgasmic.

.

Disco Lady by Johnny Taylor was the first platinum single in 1976 and then labels realised that extended 12 inch singles were perfect for discos where the dancers could linger longer on the floor. Disco albums of the 1976 - 1978 era are full of side long "suites" of an extended jam or 3 or 4 songs looped together and singles emerged out of this.

.

Unlike disco itself, the 12 inch single survived and evolved the 80s well, and Prince was a great exponent of it. Ilove nearly all of the 12 inch mixes, as they gave more scope for him to go wild (Lets Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette and lets work).

.

The long version of Erotic city is great too. You also had the mix inbetween single edit and 12 inch like the 5.48 version of I wanna be your lover from the album and ep. This included 90 seconds of luscious funk guitar and organ, and was great as well.

Start at the 1:49 mark of "La La La He He He - Full length version". Grab a hold onto something (I mean that literally) and just let the rest of it take you...there! Where? I guess that actually depends on you...doesn't it? shrug falloff kiss2

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Yes, exactly. That would be cool! There are too many interesting 12" versions that can't be ignored. The 12" of Glam Slam is just one of them.

The extended Thieves in the Temple is so much better than the album version. I really liked the Universal Love remix of Space as well.

In the 80's or 90's no other artist took a song extended it added more lyrics more arrangements.Actually making the release of his 12" versions the version to have as a Prince fan.
