Back in '86, when I was just 17, I played this song to a 21yo while we were making out at her place....... And by the time the bell sounded at the end of the song, I was ready to Do Her Baby.

Unfortunately, this was on cassette which I had the whole album taped on one side, so Private Joy came on full blast soon after which confused the fark out of the mood!

I have always loved this song. It was one that very early in his career set him apart. I mean, who else would have released it and sing it that way. While the album version is wonderful, I was thrilled to recently here an extended version from the Parade tour. It was still when he could fully embrace the song, and made it a centerpiece in his performance (as it should be). Any time like that when I hear his brilliance I am simultaneously filled with joy and grief! Ultimately, I come back to having gratitude that Prince was and still is in our lives through the magic of his music.

When the year started with Bowie, I had the feeling it wasn't the worst that was going to happen in music deaths this year. I expected there'd be someone bigger,--I assumed someone from the 60s, honestly--like McCartney or Dylan (maybe a sudden accident would hit Mick or Keith)--I never thought about Prince, which for me was the worst it could get, obviously. I also kind of felt there'd be a set of three (I worked in geriatric care for awhile--people always seemed to die in threes, and you really do seem to get them, even if honestly you really kind of define the timelimits and such to make it work). The real thing is, though, that feeling that this isn't the biggest thing hasn't gone away. I'm not absolutely sure that it has to be someone "bigger" to the world in general, maybe just to me (there are a few fairly important longterm figures for me still around)--but I'm still waiting for the OTHER other shoe to drop.
