Banana daiquiris

With the passing of Prince and the holidays coming up soon I'm sure Another lonely Christmas will get a lot of airplay. It's always been such a sad beautiful song...any thoughts or memories of this purple rain era B side?

For years i have been thinking i wish Prince would release it as a alternative to happy Christmas fayre. Now i think it is just too deep and sad to get good airplay.

It's a dark song. The echo and reverb, the hollow sound of it (sounds like someone put a Radio Shack cassette recorder in the middle of The Warehouse to record it), the lyrics. It's fictional and quite dreary. Yet oddly, the 'sound' of it kind of fits with the rehearsal sound from the 12" of "I Would Die 4 U". It didn't have that tight studio feel to it. I loved the larger labels, the picture of Prince on that side on the chaise lounge, barefoot (not a foot fetish, but we know that's rare to see), so much of it. Musically, the song reminds me of "God (Instrumental)". Pointed guitar work, lotta drum fills, and open space in the song. It's not silence, but it's 'quiet time' in section, which reminds of me his comment about Joni's use of silence.

Ultimately, the lyrics are a good story, and it's easy to visualize what narrative, which I think is a testament to a well-written story-song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I always play it at least one time during the holidays and put it back on the shelf. It always has reminded me of the soul classic"what do the lonely do at Christmas

It's dark, it has humour, It's lyrically brilliant. One of those classic B-sides he was so good at. Only the full version will do though.

this is 1 of his most underrated songs. ever.

.

nostalgically & hauntingly beautiful.

when I was a junior in high school back in the day (when this b-side came out)

I recited this song in a monologue in my drama class.

.

not a dry eye in the classroom.

.

I didn't play his music in general for a long time because I became "estranged" from Prince

(the name change fraud, suing the websites, the overall lack of quality [in my opinion] in his music)

but then, after he suddenly passed, I went back & played

ALL

of the "old" great music.

including "another lonely Christmas".

the last several times I've played this song..

I inevitably do cry.

I'm happy if I can make it to the last verse - the most poignant verse.

.

Prince obviously wrote lots of great & interesting music.

"alC" to me is 1 of those rare Prince songs where he..

showed a deeper-than-usual level of.. vulnerabilty

(for lack of a better word..)

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Always loved that song - if there are any unheard outtakes on the PR deluxe edition remotely close to the quality of this song I'll be a happy camper

Such an overwrought piece of melodrama.

.

EDIT: the above statement was overly and uneccesarily harsh.

.

I love the guitar playing and the sound of the band. And the VOCAL, my God - it's chill-inducing.

.

I just ... the lyrics. And the reverb-drenched production.
