HELLO

Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello

I tried to tell them that I didn't want to sing
But I'd gladly write a song instead
They said okay and everything was cool
Till a camera tried to get in my bed

Hello, my bed, hello, hello

I was sittin' pretty with a beautiful friend ("oh, darling")
When this man tries to get in the car ("'ey Prince, c'mon, give us a smile, eh?")
No introduction, "how you been?"
Just "up yours, smile, that's right, you're a star!" (star)

You call 'em bodyguards but I call 'em my friends
I guess I'm used to havin' 'em around
And cameras, by nature, like rewards
That's the trouble I get when I'm uptown

I'm not afraid to die (don't be afraid)
('Cause there's a better place to go) oh no, there's a better place
I eat what I want (you can eat what you want)
Whole-wheat toast (anything is cool in moderation)
And I'm happy, and that's for sure

We're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
But there's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Hello
Hello
Hello
Hello

Everybody we're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
Y'all try to understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Our record stands tall, you know
Give us time and love will show

Hello
Hello
Hello

I was wrong about the lyrics to hello. I always thought he said the 'driver' tried to get in his bed

Wow...so Prince was telling it all in Hello apparently, huh?....down to every last detail. I wonder who the "driver" was who "tried to get in his bed" then. Quincy? Michael? (We've all heard those ramblings about Jones) On another interesting note, notice how far Michael is positioned in the crowd AWAY from his brothers and Latoya.

In: Prince Talks - The Silence Is Broken
1985 Rolling Stone Interview

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/prince-talks-the-silence-is-broken-19850912

You've taken a lot of heat for your bodyguards, especially the incident in Los Angeles in which your bodyguard Chick Huntsberry reportedly beat up a photographer.
A lot of times I've been accused of sicking bodyguards on people. You know what happened in L.A.? My man the photographer tried to get in the car! I don't have any problems with someone I know trying to get in my car with me and my woman in it. But someone like that? Just to get a picture?

Does it make you angry when people dig into your background, when they want to know about your sexuality and things like that?
Everyone thinks I have a really mean temper and that I don't like people to do this or do that. I have a sense of humor. I thought that the Saturday Night Live skit with Billy Crystal as me was the funniest thing I ever saw. His imitation of me was hysterical! He was singing, "I am the world, I am the children!" Then Bruce Springsteen came to the mike, and the boys would push him away. It was hilarious. We put it on when we want to laugh. It was great. Of course, that's not what it is.

You came in for double heat over the L.A. incident because it happened the night of the "We Are the World" recording. In retrospect, do you wish you had shown up?
No. I think I did my part in giving my song [to the album]. I hope I did my part. I think I did the best thing I could do.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Extended Version

Everybody

Gotta he..., gotta he... he... hello!

I haven't lost my desire
I wouldn't beg U
Instead of playin' deduction of what 2 do
They called me rude often
When I called their hand
They judged me and told me that we're through
"Why can't U be like the others?"
I cried out over and again
"Why can't U learn 2 play by the rules?"
But maybe at last it's the end
Because I am not like others
I'm unique in the respect I'm not U

I know in my heart I would try 2 love U
I wouldn't try 2 hurt U despite all the ways U try 2 hurt me
U call me a fraud, an uncaring wretch
But I'm an artist and my only aim is 2 please
Between U and yours, myself and mine
Isn't life cruel enough without cruel words, cruel words?
U see, words are like shoes
They're just something 2 stand on
I wish U could be in my shoes
But they're probably so high, U'd fall off and die
4 U words are definitely not shoes
They're weapons and tools of destruction
And your time is boring unless U're putting something down
What would life be if we believed what we read
And a smile is just hiding a frown?
Come now, isn't life a little better with a pair of good shoes?

The Prince symbolically bowing down to the emperor to regain his favor.

(and Quincy was still trying to get him to sing that damn song. Such an obvious display of damage control and ass kissing being played out right before our unsuspecting eyes)

I think he knew it'd be corny, and that he felt he didn't strictly belong with that crowd of mainstream pop artists, some of whom were very talented but some others being carpet sellers for the masses. I wouldn't have done it either. I guess it was a matter of dignity. We have such things in France too and some stars decide not to take part, I can respect that given how lame the songs usually are.

I have to admit I love this photo. It's so striking and dramatic even though he was clearly not aware of the photo it looks like. Seriously would make a great album cover if say the image was cropped to just show Prince and that blonde girl in a sea of black. So cool. Anyway there is that haha

look at Jill Jones and her shorter blond hair vs hair down the back dark with blond 1987 Jill
Look at that tail of hair on the side of Prince's neck... that same tail of hair he would grab during the Darling Nikki scene

Wasn't there some sort of scam with the USA for Africa charity about the majority of the money lining the pocket of solicitors rather than getting to the people?

I believe that Lionel Ritchie told Quincy to stay in his seat. All that was cheesy as hell, and I wonder how much of that money actually fed the people of Africa. I guess they all know now who was The Greatest Of Them All.

Yea, I read interviews with Lisa & Wendy and they said he was difficult to work with during the Purple Rain-era. Wendy said something that made me laugh -- she was like "It's like you see him one day, and you're like, who the f_uck is this guy?!" LMAO!! lol

.

He was strong-minded, stubborn, unpredictable & that ego!! Whoa!! lol

What I really love about this song is that, musically,it seemed like a return to the synth-based sound of the 1999 album.I wasn't in love with the ATIWAD album so when I heard "Hello",I was very happy.I've always felt that Prince abandoned that sound too soon.

Actually, back then, it was said that that was the EXACT reason he didn't want to do it. He didn't want to stand next to Michael. Or even be in the same room with him. There was this HUGE ego thing going on between them in the 80's.

she wasn't mega star but she was well on her way, lets see, when purple rain was out, wasn't like a virgin out too? 1984, I think she was probably bigger in the next 2 or three years though.

Madonna had two of her best albums to her credit at that time: Madonna (released in July, 1983 with hits; Lucky Star, Borderline, Holiday) and Like A Virgin (released in November, 1984 with hits; Material Girl, Like A Virgin, Dress You Up, Angel). Now Cindy Lauper is a different story. She only had one album out at the time, her all time greatest (imo) released in October of 1983: She's So Unusual (featuring the hits; Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop, Money Changes Everything, When You Were Mine (which was written by Prince btw). I was surprised she was asked to be on the project. I like Cindy though, she is HILARIOUS and her part in the song always cracked me up lol

http://www.dailymotion.co...n-mr-t_fun still love this video

THAT IS IT! Great article and photos.

and man at the time, it was a bit tough: "“I believe that moment is what made people ambivalent about his greatness. When you get negative press going, you need twenty years for people to stop reflecting on it. And if guys like Springsteen or whoever are talking about how great he is, like they used to, it would add to the legend. But instead, everybody kind of backed off, like, ‘What the fuck kind of idiot is he that he would go to some dance club instead of just going there and singing two lines in the song?’”"

It is true, that incident was reported on so much by every news station, newpaper, radio DJ, etc. The We are the World thing was HUGE as a concert event, movement, and the cheesy single.

It really tuned a lot of the new Purple Rain fans off of Prince forever when that happened.

Personally I loved the black and white video and song he had broadcast in the middle of the concert.

...For gods sake they had 'BLACK ALBUM OF THE YEAR AWARD cool

This is what stood out the most to me when I saw a clip of this much later on YouTube. I mean, it was jarring to see in present day time. I watched this show live in the 80s but I was a kid and didn't notice it at the time. Wow.

Anyway, I think 4 the Tears in Your Eyes is a beautiful song.

I always liked the UK version 'Do They know...' better than 'We are the 'World'.

If Prince's line in the song was supposed to be 'but if you just believe, there's no way we can fall', as someone said on here- if i recall, that was MJ's line. I wonder what Prince would've done with that but I'm sure he would've slayed, whatever part he had.

I also like 'Hello' - especially the chorus and harmonies with Jill Jones.

Five days after the AMAs, following a sold-out show at the 80,000-plus-seat Superdome in New Orleans, he recorded “4 the Tears in Your Eyes,” the song he contributed to the USA for Africa album. “We had a mobile truck there, and Prince recorded the song during sound check,” says Susan Rogers. “As soon as the check was done, he came back into the truck and we stayed up all night, did the overdubs, finished it, mixed it. The next day we’re still there, we’ve been up all night, and he’s got another show to play. He was hungry, and he said, ‘Do you think you can find any food here?’ So I left the truck and went upstairs, and there were some people who were clearing out a room; they had catered a party and they had some leftover cold cuts and bread and pickles and chips and warm soda that they were going to throw out. I asked them if I could have some of it, and they said, ‘Yeah, help yourself,’ so I made up a couple of plates and I brought them back, and he and I had our leftover sandwiches and our warm soda, and we finished the track.

“A bit later, I remember reading in People magazine that at the ‘We Are the World’ session, they had champagne and caviar. In the papers, they had just torn Prince up: ‘How dare he? He doesn’t care about starving kids.’ And I thought, ‘No, actually, he was the one who went hungry on their behalf, who sat up all night and was happy to eat stale bread and warm soda to make a track for your record. He’s the one who didn’t have caviar and champagne.’ But you can’t say those things. I asked him, ‘Aren’t you going to say anything?’ And he said, ‘No, if you say anything, they got you.’ ”

I remember reading this before...and It made me Cry...and it just did again...

Prince stays up all night to contribute to the Album,

hes Hungry and ands up eating LEFT OVERS and WARM SODA, for gods sake

only to be Ripped apart by the Press who are as usual unaware of the Real FACTS...

Prince had every right to defend himself ..

and does he...?

NOPE..He takes the Humble position...

He lets them think what they want to think, because

His conscience is absolutely CLEAR....!

Im so Glad he Wrote 4 the Tears in Your Eyes ..

Such a beautiful poignant song....devoid of any sense of False Prestige....

it really was a debacle. They tried to manipulate him, Prince didn't like being manipulated, I don't think anyone does. He was rife for a backlash though and he did everything to make it happen faster. The story in the Alan Light book is that cavallo told the media he had the flu and that he should stay in the hotel, Prince goes out and parties, cavallo sounded like his lie would have made the whole thing blow over, I don't think it would have. Prince was already being seen s strange and rude and wierd. They say at awards shows the people around him were told not to look at him. I'm sorry, that's just him being bigheaded. All this, along with the Enquirer story and his own desire to escape that much limelight pretty much ended that period of megastardom. Personally, i can understand wwhy he wouldn't want to do the stupid song, it was fake, it was written by his archrival and Mj probably wanted to turn it into a duel of some kind, just like he did with the James Brown show and like he tried to do with the bad video. Michael tried to appear innocent but he was quite devious about how competive he really was. As Quincy said recently, "that was some drama mama, but Michael loved that" about their face to face meeting.

--- Both Quincy and MJ were devious. Wendy said Prince did not like song because he was a real person if he did not feel a song he would not perform it. He was selling a lot of records and people are going to be jealous.
