Prince tribute "act" touring uk

How's this make you feel? A guy dressed up a bit like Prince, singing, a bit like Prince and touring round the uk. The venue's ( although small) are selling out. Are you going? Personally I think it's sick and disrespectful but money rules these days.

Wow that is cool and I am glad that people are still showing love for Prince. I freaking love to see a tribute in this lame town I am still living who people here are stuck in the 60s and would only go to a tribute if some 60s songs played lol.

I don't see anything wrong with this, they are still performers and they should get paid for their work, regardless of if they performed Prince's songs or dressed like him or just played his songs in skinny dipping lol.

Uh, Prince tribute performers have been around for decades.

He doesn't really look like Prince, bless him, but he seems like a reasonably skilled musician. I'm going next year and whilst I'm sure the guy is making a few quid out of it, well, so be it; I guess jobbing musicians have to make a living like the rest of us!

.

The key thing, FOR ME, is (as it says) it's a Celebration of Prince and Lord knows, I need a bit of that. For me, it's an opportunity to meet up with fellow fans (we don't get that many opportunities where I live, lol), sing along to some fantastic music, and spread the joy when the days since P's passing have been so dark and joyless.

.

I do think that if shows like this are done as well as possible, they can be a good way for crowds of fans to come together and just appreciate what a great talent Prince had for creating wonderful music - even if he isn't able to play it any more. I don't want to be all alone, at home, with my record collection - I want to rejoice in Prince, in company - and this seems as a good a way to do that as any.
.

Each to their own though, huh? Live and let live, I say. smile

The advert with video has been on my facebook, but I cannot find a way to post a link here sorry.

I just can't imagine a soulful Prince guitar solo being played by an impersonator. Maybe I'm just a purist and should think of people who just want to have fun and celebrate his life.

Very surprised by the hate here. Purple Rain have been around for decades. Jimi is an exceptionally talented singer and guitarist. Saw him recenelt and there were kids about 4-5 loving it and people in the seventies dancing. Everyone was loving Prince's work. As for being about the money, you couldn't be nore wrong. When I saw hik it was free and the previous time just £10 for a two hour set by an eight piece band.

They recently played near where I live and unfortunately I missed them. I've seen videos of them on Facebook - they look pretty good!

I have seen the teasers and they are making me feel very uncomfortable (almost sick) for some reason. I guess I'm just not ready for that kind of stuff yet. I would rather go and see a tribute band that plays good music without someone trying to impersonate Prince at all. I like it when I see Andre Cymone sing Do It All Night with The Revolution for example, that cheers me up, but some other acts trying to emulate Prince in a musical rather than feel his music just looks fake, eerie and out of place I'm afraid, it feels like someone is trying to take his place at this point. It's just not him and everything on that person is showing that he is nothing like him so why pretend. It still hurts. And it hurts a lot. Sorry, no matter how talented they may be or how long they have been doing this, this is how I feel about it right now.

I think you can be both, hun. We're none of us thinking, 'this is going to be pure Prince perfection'. We're under no illusions: it isn't him; we know it's not him; we know the music can never be delivered in the same way - but, ultimately, I do think Prince also stood for more than that: he wanted us to foster community spirit; he wanted us all to share and rejoice in music and love. I think, in that sense, this will go a little way towards that.
.

I've been very poorly myself and haven't had the opportunity to go out and do much recently: as a result, I've lost touch with many old friends. This is a way for me (and I should imagine, many others) to connect with kindred spirits - so it's all good. smile

I would love to see the Rev with Andre Cymone and Bilal take their tribute on the road...

That's cool if people want to keep Prince's music alive and gives everyone a chance to celebrate together.

You put my unwritten thoughts in your post thanks. I'm fine with bands playing there own interpretation of his songs. Something classy and artistic would be so amazing. But dressing up. £26 a ticket? It is personal. Maybe I need to see this "tribute" to understand how it works.

When I think of all the brilliant aftershows I got to see for only £25 per night... Nothing will ever compare.

Let us know your impressions (pun not intended) if you end up going. smile

Basically Jimi and a very talented band play songs such as the Love We Make, Get on the Boat and all the big hits. No ulterior motive, it just brings together Prince fans. It's rather like the Prince Parties we hold in the UK. What's your views on them? Obviously it's not Prince and obviously if you don't feel it's your thing, you odn't have to attend. I think it's only £26 as they are putting a big more production into it. It ultimately gives people joy and happiness, they meet with other Prince fans, dance around and enjoy the music. It's important for some to have a senseof real community, not just online connections.

I've seen Jimi & the band a couple of times (when P. Was still alive) and they are an excellent tribute. They are clearly fans and very respectful of the material. Their sets contain obscure songs as well as hits and lots of songs that Prince no longer played himself.
.
When Prince cancelled his Croke Park gig in Dublin back in 2008 at very short notice (when flights and hotels couldn't be refunded) these guys hastily scheduled a gig in a local club for the disappointed fans and rescued the weekend. I'll forever be grateful for that.
.
They're keeping the music alive and have been doing so for many years. I don't see this as a cheap cash-in on his death and will be pleased to see them again next year.

AHA! The one and only time I ever went to club Sin!

That gig was beyond brilliant, what a fantastic night after the chaos of the Croke Park cancellation.

If any tribute band deserve to be supported it's these thumbs up!

I saw Jimi and the guys a few years back and can thoroughly recommend them. Obviously don't go along expecting to see a perfect impression of Prince, he was unique and incomaprable. But these guys are really good in their own right. Along with the hits, they also threw in various other tracks, which was great to hear even though I now can't recall which tracks they were!

I also saw one of the Vegas acts when I was there and while they were also great, Jimi and the guys were far better.

RIP sad

Seen Jimi several times over the past 10 years or so. He doesn't try to BE Prince, he plays a large selection of songs from all eras and pays tribute to the sound and style. Definitely recommend going to see them if you get the chance, the atmosphere is great because nearly everyone at the gigs are huge Prince fans. Some events have been in the open air playing to a few thousand, and some in small pubs playing to about 50 people. Have spoken with him and various band members a few times. It's all about the music, the fans and the atmosphere for them.
This is what it's like in the dream factory...
