One of those:

Muse 2 the pharao
Mellow
1+1+1=3
She Loves Me For Me

Mellow and She Loves Me For Me definitely had single-potential

How anyone can think MBGITW is a "truly classic" song is beyond me.

TRUE! I couldn´t understand all the fuzz that was made around it´s release at the time and I still don´t understand why it went no. 1. It as a nice melody, but it´s quite boring. Verse and Chorus have exactly the same melody. It´s a nice melody, but not enough to make the song interesting. What really pissed me of was taht he made a whole EP - The Beautiful Experience - out of it.

Can't help thinking it was Thieves in the Temple.

That long back?? I really don't understand how that was such a big hit. I don't even rate it as an album track. I much prefer 'New power geneartion'

I don't know, it just signifies a watershed in Prince's songwriting for me. The next hit was Gett Off which was more of a funk jam then a song if you get my drift. Same with Sexy MF. It just seemed that the funk became more important than the storytelling and I didn't enjoy it as much.

Yeah, he really loves his funk these days. I don't know if he's too 'black' for his white audience.
Having said that, I think 'TMBGITW' stands up as a song alone.

Well, the most recently released great song has got to be Empty Room. That's a truly great song. But we all know it's pretty old.

Of the new stuff, I'd have to say that One Nite Alone, Everlasting Now, and Last December are really great songs. I don't think the quality of his songwriting has declined at all. I just think I LIKE many of them less due to lyrical content. But that's my problem; they are still great songs.

It's the anti-Prince song.

>That's what he said when he was on BET "I rank 'the one' and 'come on' up there with my best work, but they won't be hits 'cause the stores ain't stocking them'

But I don't believe this. I think the songs are dead. They don't have the energy or emotion of his 80's stuff.<

You gotta be kidding me. If anything, most of his music that comes out these days are from a deeper emotional level than before. Just because "The One" is a ballad and the production is less poppy doesn't mean it is lifeless. It's more passionate than most of his 80s hits.

Oh, and as for the topic, his last truly great song (ie. a piece with words and music) would probably be Avalanche. His last great piece of work would be the instrumentals "Xogenous" and "Xpedition".

100% agree!!
it is simple and boring, and that's the reason why common people liked it...this is the tragic market rule!! but we as old fans, we want something more from him, that's why we listen 2 his REAL music.
THE RECENT BEST SONGs ARE 1+1+1+=3 AND FAMILY NAME.
